Rick Wakeman is hanging up his sequined cape after one final U.S. tour. “I always planned to stop touring by my 77th birthday,” the prog rock keyboardist said in a statement, “for those of you who wish to send me a card, it’s May 18th! — but there is so much to fit in before then that I’m having to make plans now, and so my final one-man shows will have to cease by that date.”

Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. This edition features backup bassist Billy Sherwood.
If you saw Yes on the 1994 Talk tour and then again anytime during the past seven years, you were essentially seeing two different bands.

Jon Anderson started Yes in 1968 with bassist Chris Squire, and the prog rock band was at the center of his life for the next four decades through numerous permutations. But when illness forced him off the road after the group’s 2004 tour, Yes decided to hire a replacement vocalist and carry on without him. Anderson has been healthy and active for well over a decade, but the band — which now features Seventies guitarist Steve Howe, Drama-era keyboardist Geoff Downes, and hired guns — refuses to take him back.

Yes’ new album The Quest is arriving on October 1st, and on Friday they shared a video for leadoff single “The Ice Bridge,” their first new song in seven years.
The song was written by Yes frontman Jon Davison and keyboardist Geoff Downes. It’s about the “race against time” to reverse the devastating impact of climate change.
“Usually what happens is each member is left to write their respective parts and put their stamp on things,” Davison said in a statement. “Geoff sent me a selection of exciting and...

The dawn of the Eighties was supposed to make prog bands like Genesis, Yes, and Rush die out like the dinosaurs, now that we were in the age of MTV and New Wave. That’s not quite how it played it out, however. The men of these bands chopped off their long hair, cut their standard 20-minute songs down to size, and somehow became more popular than ever. They even joined forced in various short-lived supergroups and charted with slick hits that competed for Top 40 airplay alongside the latest offerings by Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Yes fans have spent the past 15 years hoping that the surviving members of the group will put aside their differences for a reunion tour, but guitarist Steve Howe tells Rolling Stone that that is a very unlikely proposition.
“I don’t think [the fans] should stay up late nights worrying about that,” he says. “There’s just too much space out there between people. To be in a band together or even to do another tour like Union is completely unthinkable.”

In an alternate universe where the coronavirus hasn’t shut down the entire concert industry, progressive-rock fans from around the globe are heading down to Florida to set sail on the Cruise to the Edge next week. The lineup this year included Yes, Marillion, Steve Hackett, and other giants of the prog-rock universe.
Yes backed out of the cruise last week and there was a brief moment when the cruise planned on carrying on without them, even though the thing is named after one of their most famous records, Close to the Edge.

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

Nearly 30 years ago, Yes frontman Jon Anderson began work on a solo album with help from his bandmates Alan White and Chris Squire. He never got around to finishing it and eventually got sidetracked by Yes work, but recently went back into the studio to complete the album with help from producer Michael T. Franklin. Anderson originally called the project Uzlot, but now that it’s finally done, he’s calling it 1,000 Hands. It comes out March 31st.

Downtown Music Publishing has entered into a multi-year publishing administration deal with Faber Music, which represents the musical repertoire from “Cats,” the beloved and long-running Broadway sensation currently being turned into a feature film starring Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Idris Elba and Judi Dench, among others. The Universal picture, directed by Tom Hooper, recently started production and is slated for release in Dec. 2019.
Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the music of “Cats” is rooted in the poetry collection “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot. The stage show’s Broadway and London runs both broke records with the U.K. production launching in 1981 and in New York the following year. The former ran for 21 years and the latter nearly as long, winning seven Tony Awards.

It might not be a popular critical view, but I’ve always quite enjoyed the Ice Age films. I can’t work out if their refusal to abide by natural laws of logic is arrogance, convenience or sheer chutzpah. But I like the fact that they ignore it nonetheless, whilst preserving the internal logic of the films themselves. Dinosaurs in the ice age? Yeah, we can do that. Let’s just chuck in a quick line to explain it and move on. They got a whole third film out of that idea.
For film five, which follows the chucklesome Ice Age: Continental Drift, the series decides to channel Michael Bay’s Armageddon a little bit, at one stage bringing in Trevor Rabin’s thumping score for a key sequence.

Over the decades, the silver screen has been filled with dauntless canines such as Shiloh, Toto, Lassie, Benji and Beethoven.

Shipped stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin, so Max is adopted by Kyle’s family, essentially saving his life. But Justin has issues of his own, such as living up to his father’s expectations for him; he isn’t interested in taking responsibility for his brother’s troubled dog.

Here’s your first look at Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Kevin Hart in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Grudge Match.
In theaters on December 25th, De Niro and Stallone are old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match in director Peter Segal’s comedy.
In Grudge Match, De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to reenter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

Michael Bay is sorry for the way he ended one of his biggest blockbusters.
“I will apologize for 'Armageddon,' because we had to do the whole movie in 16 weeks. It was a massive undertaking," Bay told Rene Rodriguez of the Miami Herald when asked about his hyper-kinetic editing style. "That was not fair to the movie. I would redo the entire third act if I could. But the studio literally took the movie away from us. It was terrible. My visual effects supervisor had a nervous breakdown, so I had to be in charge of that. I called James Cameron and asked 'What do you do when you’re doing all the effects yourself?' But the movie did fine."
Indeed it did. "Armageddon" earned $553 million worldwide in an era before 3D and scored a higher percentage of good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes than the last two "Transformers" sequels.

Later this week, the alleged final theatrical release directed by Steven Soderbergh will open nationwide. Titled Side Effects, it’s a fine little thriller involving psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry. Maybe not the grandest finale for the filmmaker who gave us such big movies as the Oceans trilogy, Traffic, Che, Shizopolis and of course Sex, Lies and Videotape, but he didn’t enter the business with a bang either. Soderbergh’s first professional directing gig, at age 21, was helming a little-recognized concert film titled Yes: 9012Live, which presents a 1984 performance by the band Yes during their tour supporting the album 90125. (You can see a clip of them doing “Roundabout” from the film here.) Supplementary to that, he shot a short backstage documentary during the tour called Access All Areas. It’s a crude look at the reunited prog-rock group both aesthetically and content-wise. It’s quickly cut, offering only bits of moments rather than full-on scenes. And...

The commander-in-chief's turn as entertainer-in-chief is a David and Goliath plot for the ages, and we're only halfway through
How's the election been for you? On a scale of one to 10? Great? Just Ok? Would you recommend it to a friend? Not to trivialize the historical crossroads at which we find ourselves, still less the opportunity for a frank and rigorous exchange of ideas over the best policy with which to lead this great republic into the 21st century, but: have you had fun? Did it suck? Were you on the edge of your seat? Or was it a complete waste of your TiVo?
That America's political machine is an ever-growing subsidiary of its entertainment industry has long been remarked upon. "All campaigns are movies now, consisting of competing narratives with competing stars," wrote Neal Gabler in his superb 1998 book Life: The Movie, a radical expansion of Norman Mailer's famous comment,...

We've been following the story of Grouplove as told through the lens of director Jordan Bahat's "Bloom" for a couple weeks now. To review, the band formed on the isle of Crete during a romantic voyage undertaken by guitarist Christian Zucconi and keyboardist Hannah Hooper who'd just recently met at a show in New York. There they met two Californian travelers, Andrew Wessen and Ryan Rabin, son of Hollywood mainstay Trevor Rabin. And along with British expat Sean Gadd, they all formed Grouplove.
Here's the third and final part of "Bloom" and a peek into the making of their album, "Never Trust A Happy Song."
Watch parts one and two! And let us know what you think in the comments below or on Twitter or Facebook!

When we left off with Grouplove last week in "Bloom part 1," their interviewer was accusing their backstory of sounding like the set up to a bad sitcom. There's no denying it is an awfully strange tale. What brought these strangers together on the island of Crete in 2009, who then started a band?
Guitarist Christian Zucconi and keyboardist Hannah Hooper came from New York just after a meeting and having a whirlwind romance. Drummer/producer Ryan Rabin (son of film composer Trevor Rabin) and his childhood friend, guitarist Andrew Wessen came from California for their own reasons. And they all collided with the loner Brit, bassist Sean Gadd there in the middle of the Mediterranean. As they reminisce in this second part, they reflect on how lucky they are to be carrying on what they have. How will it hold together? The answer seems to be spelled out by a wizard quoting the King James bible.

Graeme Revell has been hired to score the horror thriller Shark Night 3D. The movie stars Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Katharine McPhee, Donal Logue, Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz and Joel David Moore. The film is directed by David R. Ellis and revolves around a group of college friends who spend the weekend at a lake house, only to find all sorts of dangerous sharks lurking beneath the waters. The director’s previous musical collaborators include John Ottman (Cellular), Trevor Rabin (Snakes on a Plane), Shirley Walker (Final Destination 2) and Brian Tyler (The Final Destination). Shark Night 3D marks Revell’s first major feature project in a while. His last box office hit was the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Pineapple Express back in 2008. The composer is no stranger to the horror thriller genre, having previously scored such films as Pitch Black, The Ruins, Below and Open Water. Shark Night 3D...

Need a score for your barnstorming action movie? Then Trevor Rabin’s your composer. Glen salutes his finest work...
A successful musician prior to making the transition to composing for film, Trevor Rabin’s impressive guitar work was initially heard in the 70s rock bands Rabbitt and Yes, before he embarked on a successful solo career.
Rabin’s scores are typified by his high-quality lead guitar lines, which suit the action material he often composes for perfectly. He’s also pretty good with an orchestra, as we’ll see below.
Con Air
The finest action film of the 90s, and arguably the last 20 years, Con Air is a film that quite rightly gets a lot of love on this site. The score is a collaboration between Rabin and Mark Mancina, with the former handling guitar duties and the latter handling production, synth and percussion.

Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 18, 2011
Plot: John (Pettyfer) is a teenager from another planet with special powers bestowed upon him by his alien roots. With the help of his guardian Henri, he tries to elude those trying to kill him and eight others, which would subsequently destroy his race.

The darkly obsessive director of Fight Club and The Social Network takes on the biggest franchise since Harry Potter—The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Now W Magazine has five more photos, stemming from the two we premiered yesterday, of Rooney Mara. I have to say she is very goth sexy in these photos and it is amazing what the actress did to get ready for the role.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (original title in Swedish: Män som hatar kvinnor – “Men Who Hate Women”) is an award-winning crime novel by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson, the first in his Millennium Trilogy. At his death in November 2004, Larsson left three unpublished novels that made up the trilogy. It became a posthumous best-seller in several European countries as well as in the United States. Nicolas Cage is back to hunt treasure in his own unique way, as National Treasure 3 is being readied for the end of 2011…
It's little surprise that Disney has been planning a third National Treasure movie. The first two put forward Nicolas Cage as the world's least convincing treasure hunter, a man who can solve riddles that have foxed historians for centuries in the time it takes to get to the end of another piece of Trevor Rabin's score. And yet, they were an absolute hoot. Daft? Yep. Over the top? Yep. Scant regard for realism? Check. But entertaining nonetheless.
Nicolas Cage is reteaming already with his National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub for this summer's incoming The Sorcerer's Apprentice movie. Yet, the two are likely to be reunited again before the year is out for their fourth film together, National Treasure 3.

This is a movie I am looking forward too and seems to actually be another hit for Cage. I have been wondering if we’d see any marketing/advertising materials soon for the movie being that its only a few months out, now ComingSoon has debuted the first teaser poster for the film and its pretty awesome artwork. In fact I am confident saying this is some of the best poster art I have seen in awhile.
I am impressed by the coloring and the sneering of Cage showing his magical ring but its really the color scheme and attraction that almost has it in a painting style.
The films follows an average college student (Jay Baruchel) is reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer (Nicolas Cage), who gives him a crash course in the art and science of magic to prepare him for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern Manhattan.

All the focus for Disney on the fanboys and fangirls has been on the new Tron film, Tron Legacy but many forget they have a few other movies coming out this summer. One in particular is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. From the team that brought us a National Treasure this is a retelling of the classic poem and Fantasia scene with Mickey Mouse. Disney has released a new international trailer for the film that gives a lot more of the film and it looks like a lot of bad ass magic fun to the extreme.
