Hot on the heels of leaving Netflix for Amazon, horror creator Mike Flanagan already has his next big project lined up. The creator of spooky TV favorites like “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Midnight Club” has acquired the rights to adapt Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” book series.
Flanagan revealed the news in a Deadline interview with his producing partner Trevor Macy about their jump from Netflix to Amazon, where they recently inked an overall deal.
“Predating our deal with Amazon, we acquired the rights to ‘The Dark Tower,’ which if you know anything about me, you know it has been my Holy Grail of a project for most of my life,” Flanagan told Deadline. “We actually have those rights carved out of our Amazon deal, which doesn’t mean that they can’t or won’t get behind it at some point — you don’t know.

"We made a deal. You broke it." Samuel Goldwyn has revealed the official US trailer for a Finnish action thriller titled Attack on Finland, which is the international release title. It also goes under Omerta 6/12 or 6/12, which is a reference to December 6 the Finnish Independence Day. A celebration during the holiday in Finland takes a tragic turn when the Presidential Palace is attacked and the president is taken hostage. Soon it is clear that the main target behind the attack is a plan to destabilize the security of Europe. That sounds a lot like Finland's version of Olympus Has Fallen or White House Down. The action film's cast includes Jasper Pääkkönen, Nanna Blondell, Sverrir Gudnason, Cathy Belton, Nika Savolainen, Pertti Sveholm, Juhan Ulfsak, Zijad Gracic, Miodrag Stojanović, and Dragomir Mrsic. This looks hyper-stylized and intense, but it also feels a bit made-for-tv in quality. Still may be an entertaining watch.

Seasoned Finnish writer-director-producer Aku Louhimies is plotting multi-season TV drama “Conflict,” a near-future political action thriller that turns on a Finland threatened by an unknown military force.
Comparing the project to high-profile Norwegian TV show “Occupied,” the director said he had the idea for “Conflict” after his war epic “Unknown Soldier,” Finland’s record-breaking movie with over 1 million ticket sales. “I started thinking what if Finland was suddenly threatened by foreign forces. How would we react and how would that affect geopolitics in the Nordic region?” reflected Louhimies, who contemplates building the project as a major international TV drama.
The project is co-penned by actor Andrei Alén, novelist and officer in reserve Helena Immonen, and long-time writing partner Jari Olavi Rantala.
Set on Midsummer’s Eve, the story follows an unknown military unit, as it invades a peaceful sea-side town in Finland. All residents are taken hostage, and civilians, used...

Updated with full list: The nominations for the 27th SAG Award were announced Thursday in a virtual ceremony featuring Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs reading off nominees in 13 film and TV categories honoring the best acting of the past year.
Much like it did at the Golden Globes the day before, Netflix led the way with 30 total nominations. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble race features three Netflix dramas: Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7 along with A24’s Minari and Amazon Studios’ One Night In Miami. Outside of Chicago 7 it is a fully new slate of films from the admittedly apples-to-oranges Best Motion Picture lists set by the Golden Globes on Wednesday.
Last year, Parasite won the film ensemble award, pushing it down the road to the eventual Best Picture Oscar.

After the Oscar-winning success of BlacKkKlansman, what filmmaker Spike Lee opted to follow it up with always always going to be inherently fascinating. After all, that movie had won Lee his first Academy Award. Would that move him in a more mainstream direction? If so, would any of his creative forces be blunted? Well, if any of that worried you, fear not. Da 5 Bloods, hitting Netflix on Friday, is certainly poised to be one of his most widely seen efforts, but it retains everything that makes him such a special and unique storyteller. Crafting an essential bit of cinema for our times, this is something that absolutely needs to be seen. The film is a drama, mixing in war elements. A quartet of African American Army veterans in Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin have returned to Vietnamese soil, decades after the war. During the Vietnam War,...

All eyes were going to be on Spike Lee’s follow up to his Oscar winning effort BlacKkKlansman. Well, Lee has chosen his next movie to be a wholly unique project, and today, Netflix debuted the First Trailer for Da 5 Bloods, a mix of war, drama, and a meditation on how America has treated black soldiers. You can see the Trailer below, but it looks great. Netflix could have a definite awards player here with this one, if all goes well… The film is combination of genres, as is Lee’s predilection. Da 5 Bloods trailer has arrived, previewing director Spike Lee’s intense, pathologically-potent Netflix feature following four African-American Vietnam War veterans who return to their former battlefield several decades later to recover a cache of gold and quell personal demons.
The events of the film unfurl through the time periods of the Vietnam War—in which our quartet of Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) are young men—and a contemporary period in which they—joined by Paul’s adult son, David (Jonathan Majors)—return to the jungles to reclaim their gilded prize and recover the remains of their fallen squad leader—a flashback role provided by Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman.

"Gentlemen - welcome back to Vietnam." Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Da 5 Bloods, Spike Lee's new joint that will be debuting directly to Netflix in June coming this summer. This was originally supposed to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as a special selection, but it will be released soon anyway. In the film, four African-American Vets battle the forces of man and nature when they return to Vietnam seeking the remains of their fallen Squad Leader and the gold fortune he helped them hide. The cast for this is incredible! Starring Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., with Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Van Veronica Ngo, plus Jean Reno, and Chadwick Boseman. Hot damn, this looks terrific! What a trailer. Psychedelic title cards, vintage 4:3 footage, and one helluva story about some old Vietnam Vets going back.

“Time has come today,” barks the first trailer for the latest movie from Spike Lee, “Da 5 Bloods,” a war film that tells the story of the “soul brothers” who fought in the Vietnam War.
“Da 5 Bloods” is Lee’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning film “BlackKklansman,” and this first look, all scored to the Chambers Brothers song “Time Has Come Today,” has the energy, color and political spark of any Spike Lee joint.
It’s an original story about how four African American veterans return to Vietnam in search of their fallen squad leader’s remains, played by Chadwick Boseman, as well as a chest full of buried gold treasure left there during the war. But along the way they battle the forces of man and nature and confront the lasting ravages of “the immorality of the Vietnam War.”

While there are no summer blockbusters coming to theaters–at least for the next few months–Netflix is soon unveiling one of their biggest movies of the year. After his Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, Spike Lee is back with Da 5 Bloods, a 154-minute epic which will arrive on June 12, and now the first trailer has landed.
Starring Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Jean Reno, and Chadwick Boseman, the film follows four black war veterans who return to Vietnam to search for their missing commander and hopefully find treasure. Using a mix of archival footage, present-day, and flashbacks–seemingly all on different formats–the trailer has quite the epic scope with this riff on The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has passed on The Dark Tower pilot. The adaptation of Stephen King’s book came from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and Mrc. The production company is shopping two original scripts that were the basis for the pilot pickup, sources said.
The Dark Tower has always been considered very difficult to adapt to the screen, which explains the title’s lengthy road to being made as a feature by Sony and a pilot by Amazon. Largely because of the challenges translating the material, Amazon opted to go with a pilot vs. straight-to-series on a big-scale, big-budget production like The Dark Tower. In the end, I hear Amazon executives felt like the pilot was not on the level of other large-scope elevated genre series the streamer has in production/pre-production like Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of the Rings.

Amazon’s quest to Mid-World has officially begun.
While the online giant is currently developing a spinoff series for The Lord of the Rings, earlier this week it was announced that The Dark Tower TV show has begun filming. Not only that, but Michael Rooker, star of The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy, will frontline the sci-fi drama in an undisclosed role.
Word is Amazon has set up shop in Croatia, where a pilot episode is being filmed on location. We may well be lucky enough to see one or two set photos emerge over the coming days, in which case we may be able to deduce who, exactly, Rooker is playing. Could it be Eldred Jonas, leader of the Big Coffin Hunters gang? All we know for sure is that this version of The Dark Tower is much more faithful to the Stephen King opus, as Deadline...

The Walking Dead alum Michael Rooker has been tapped to co-star opposite Sam Strike and Jasper Pääkkönen in Amazon’s pilot The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s book, which has started production.
The Dark Tower TV series, from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and Mrc, is independent from the 2017 film and is meant to be a more faithful retelling of the book than the movie was. I hear it takes place many years before the events depicted in the feature and will focus on the origin story of Roland Deschain’s (Strike) – how he first became a gunslinger and got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black (Pääkkönen), his first love and his first mission as a gunslinger.
Pääkkönen is believed to be playing Marten, the character Roland is out to kill. I hear Rooker also plays a main villain and might be Eldred Jonas from the books,...

The Stephen King adaptation, directed by Nikolaj Arcel and produced by Howard, was highly anticipated before its release back in 2017, with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey snagged for plum roles. After it came to life on the big screen, the wheels began to turn on a series adaptation of Stephen King's epic The Dark Tower books, with Glen Mazzara joining the project as showrunner and executive producer back in 2017. Now, the project is gaining speed at Amazon, with Sam Strike cast in the lead role.
Deadline reports that in The Dark Tower series, Sam Strike will play Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger. Additionally, Jasper Pääkkönen is expected to play the villainous Marten in the series, whom readers will remember as playing a key, devious role in Roland's past.
According to Deadline, the in-development series (which is "nearing a formal pilot order" at Amazon) will be more in line with the source material of King's books and will also be separate from the 2017 film. Amazon has cast the first two roles for its upcoming “Dark Tower” adaptation, TheWrap has learned.
Jasper Pääkkönen and Sam Strike have been cast in the project as Roland Deschain, (a.k.a. Of all the realistic outcomes of Oscar night, one of the most pleasing sights would be seeing Spike Lee on stage giving an acceptance speech. A five time Academy Award nominee (including three just this year), Lee is one of the highest profile filmmakers never to have been given a competitive statue. He has an Honorary Oscar, but it’s not the same. Up for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman, this is the best chance yet to see Lee get a moment in the sun. Can it happen? We’ll be discussing just that possibility next, so read on… Last night, I attended An Evening With Spike Lee, highlighted by a conversation between Lee and Lawrence O’Donnell, followed by a screening of BlacKkKlansman. Today we are recognizing BlacKkKlansman, as well as co-writer/director Spike Lee, plus co-stars Adam Driver and John David Washington. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking. By Peter BelsitoThe Talking Pictures and Book to Screen program includes in-depth discussions with directors, writers and actors from the year’s top titles. BlacKkKlansman (USA) with author Ron Stallworth (Book to Screen) will be featured.
Peter Belsito at Cannes 2018: This is the best, most important film I saw at Cannes. It should be — hope so! — massively seen upon its USA release.
If it gets people, especially young ones to view this very important American political work, anything Spike Lee, often too outspoken for many people, does or says is good.
Adam Driver and John David Washington in a scene from the movie “BlacKkKlansman.”
BlacKkKlansman was adapted from a book by Ron Stallworth, Colorado Springs’ first black police officer, who in the early 1970s succeeded in infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The sheer absurdity of the circumstances clearly inspired Lee and his three co-writers to play the material,...
