YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl is leaving the company.
He’ll exit in early 2023, according to a staff memo sent today by CEO Susan Wojcicki. The memo was first obtained by Variety.
Kyncl joined YouTube in 2010, and as Cbo has overseen everything from content (including YouTube’s ultimately ill-fated Originals push) to sales, marketing, and growth strategy.
“Under his leadership, YouTube forged new relationships and partnerships in music, traditional media and tech, and our creator ecosystem – without him, the term ‘YouTuber’ wouldn’t be a mainstream term,” Wojcicki wrote.
She added, “Thanks to Robert and his leadership team, we are meaningfully contributing to the media industry, having paid more than 30B to creators, artists and media companies in the last 3 years. We owe so much of our growth and impact to Robert’s leadership, and I want to celebrate his amazing contribution to YouTube.”

Celebrating a decade of DC Universe Original Movie world premieres in San Diego, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will once again give fans their first look at an all-new animated feature with the presentation of Batman and Harley Quinn on the Friday, July 21, at Comic-Con International.
In Batman and Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Jason Woodrue (a.k.a. The Floronic Man) embark on an ecological quest to save the planet – and, unfortunately, eliminate most of humankind along the way. To save humanity, Batman and Nightwing are forced to enlist Harley Quinn to catch Poison Ivy, Harley’s Bff and frequent partner-in-crime. But Batman’s patience is put to the test by the unpredictable and untrustworthy Harley during the twists and turns the reluctant companions face during their bumpy road trip. The result is a thrill ride of action, adventure and comedy no Batman fan has seen before.
The world premiere of Batman and Harley Quinn will include a post-screening panel discussion among available members of the core cast and filmmaking team. The latest DC animated film features a stellar voice cast led by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) reprising his role as the Dark Knight, alongside Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) making her debut as the irrepressible Harley Quinn. Loren Lester, the voice of Robin in Batman: The Animated Series, returns as Nightwing. Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds) and Kevin Michael Richardson (The Cleveland Show) provide the voices of the villainous duo Poison Ivy & Jason Woodrue, respectively.
Fathom Events will follow that premier with their own one-night cinema event for the latest DC Universe Original Movie, Batman and Harley Quinn, on August 14, one night prior to the Digital release and 15 days in advance of its arrival on Blu-ray™ and DVD. In addition to seeing the film, audiences at the one-night screening will be the first to experience an exclusive featurette spotlighting the film’s star character, Harley Quinn.
“Fans of DC Universe Original Movies are a devoted legion, and never was that so evident than with the enthusiastic embracing of our Batman: The Killing Joke Fathom Events presentation,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family and Animation Marketing. “Audiences nationwide turned the screenings into true interactive experiences, and we believe Batman and Harley Quinn will inspire a similar night of celebration.”
The film boasts a stellar voice cast topped by The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch in her first turn as the irrepressible Harley Quinn. Over the weekend, I posted an article that introduced you to an animated web-series called DC Super Hero Girls. This is something my kids made me aware of that they enjoy watching. I’ve since learned that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. animation are now developing an animated feature film, which is not only based on the web-series but also a toy line.
The movie is called DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year, and it features DC characters such as Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumblebee, Poison Ivy, and Katana as they come together to try and survive the struggles of high school. Mary Ellen Thomas, Wbhe Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing, said this in a statement:
“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is thrilled to team with DC Entertainment to release DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year on DVD. These characters were developed with girls 6-12 in mind and will deliver epic story lines featuring strong females. It truly embraces and celebrates girls as they discover their own unique abilities.”
This Super Hero Girls franchise is pretty cool, especially given the fact that it’s targeted to little girls like my daughters who are looking for this kind of thing to watch. As a geeky dad, it’s fun getting into conversations about these characters with my kids! Then I can be like, “Now, you’ve gotta check out this other series I grew up with called Batman: The Animated Series which has some of these characters you like and a lot more!”
You can watch the trailer for the animated movie below. DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year will be released digitally on August 9th, with a home video version on August 23rd.

I Am Not An Allegory (these are people i know) Written by Libby Emmons Directed by Ali Ayala Horse Trade Theater Group, Under St. Marks, NYC March 10-26, 2016
I Am Not an Allegory (these are people i know) jumps into the big questions right from the start, with a conversation between café coworkers Ames (Natalya Krimgold) and Severin (Conor Daniel Bartram) in which she puzzles over whether identity is intrinsic or constructed and what would happen if she switched lives with the people she passes when she is running, and he wonders whether there is any meaning that isn’t manufactured. Ames and Severin are two nodes in the network of characters who populate Libby Emmons's play, in which a dance class run by Danesha (Masonya Berry), forced to retreat home after a failed attempt at a professional dance career in New York City, is the hub of their intersection.

Mary Ellen Keefe, who served as the model for Norman Rockwell's "Rosie the Riveter" painting has died. She was 92. Her family confirmed the news to multiple outlets and stated she had passed away in Connecticut Tuesday after a brief illness. Keefe met Rockwell when she was growing up in Arlington, Vt. She would pose for his iconic painting when she was a 19-year-old telephone operator. The finished piece, which later appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, symbolized the millions of women who went to work on the home front during World War II. During a 2012 interview with the Hartford Courant, Keefe recalled the famous photo session that earned her a total of...

Toronto's late, lamented University Theatre
I first saw Apocalypse Now at Toronto’s exquisite University cinema on 17th August, 1979. The film opened on Wednesday 15th August as part of an inaugural three city run in New York, La, and Toronto, with tickets sold in advance as they had been in the past for ‘road show’ presentations. The University was a 1500 seat deco/nouveau single screen cinema with a beautiful facade and lobby which was equipped for 70mm projection; the 70mm presentation of Apocalypse Now was the first to utilise Dolby Stereo 70mm Six Track, and the cinema probably had to upgrade its sound system to accommodate the demands of Coppola and his sound editor Walter Murch.
I remember being very nervous as I presented my ticket as I was not 18 and the film had received an R (18 and over only) rating from the Ontario censor. Happily, my very youthful countenance...
