'Trumbo' movie: Bryan Cranston as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. 'Trumbo' movie review: Highly entertaining 'history lesson' Full disclosure: on the wall in my study hangs a poster – the iconic photograph of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, with black-horned rim glasses, handlebar mustache, a smoke dangling from the end of a dramatic cigarette holder. He's sitting – stark naked – in a tub surrounded by his particular writing apparatus. He's looking directly into the camera of the photographer, his daughter Mitzi. Dalton Trumbo's son, Christopher Trumbo, gave me the poster after my interview with him for the release of Peter Askin's 2007 documentary also titled Trumbo. That film combines archival footage, including family movies and photographs, with performances of the senior Trumbo's letters to his family during their many years of turmoil before and through the blacklist, including his time in prison. The letters are read by,...

Welcome to the ninth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the ninth episode, “Boca," coming up just as soon as you lie like I play the French horn... "I didn't hurt nobody." -Tony In the grand scheme of "Sopranos" season 1, the most important part of "Boca" takes place on a Jersey golf course, where Uncle Junior and Tony...

Lifetime knows that when they make a film starring Letoya Luckett and Method Man, Black Twitter is certain to give it the ratings it desires, if even only to deride the film the entire time. Unfortunately, this film is such a dud, it’s not even worth the memes. Directed by Princess Monique, "Seasons of Love" is a tedious love story that doesn’t have the drama nor excitement of even ten minutes on the F train. It opens with Ms. Angie (Gladys Knight going through the motions) and Pop (the lovable Richard Portnow) celebrating their kazillionth wedding anniversary at their restaurant in NYC. Ms. Angie and Pop’s dopey light skinned, pretty-eyed son Amir (Cleo Anthony) is never...

Spike Lee’s anticipated Oldboy remake is just over two weeks from touching down in cinemas, arriving just in time for Thanksgiving across the Atlantic.
FilmDistrict has been gearing up nicely for the film’s release in recent weeks, and all that they’ve released so far has raised the anticipation nicely. And with little more than a fortnight before it finally hits cinemas, a new clip has debuted online, giving us a look at Josh Brolin sharing a drink with The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli on the former’s first day of freedom.

Remaking Park Chan-wook’s classic 2003 films of the same name, Spike Lee’s Oldboy is understandably one of the year’s most anticipated movies.
With a stellar cast led by Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen, there’s every reason to be excited that the film will live up to expectations (and then some), and will be one of the few remakes in recent memory that we’ll remember as worthy of being remade.
The first teaser poster was spotted recently out at CinemaCon, and now FilmDistrict have debuted it the hi-res version online, gearing up the film’s campaign ahead of its release towards the end of the year.

The great innovators and popular entertainers of previous generations often fade from sight from they retire or die. A new generation discovers them afresh, either on their own, or someone has done some digging. In the case of the famed director Alfred Hitchcock, he has spawned a cottage industry with recent biographies and films. Hitchcock, with Anthony Hopkins nearly unrecognizable under the latex, is based on Stephen Rebello’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and portrays a particular point of view about the Englishman.
Psycho is currently his best known work, especially with this week’s debut of Bates Motel on cable but critics tend to pick his other, earlier works as among his best. According to our friends over at Blu-ray.com, Fox Searchlight has announced the home video release date for Hitchcock, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins in the title role and Helen Mirren, who's been nominated for several awards already, as his wife. Look for it in stores on March 12th.
The film, which is billed as “a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the last century, Alfred Hitchcock, and his wife and partner, Alma Reville,” takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s seminal movie Psycho. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, and Helen Mirren stars as Alma. Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood Smith also star.
The project is based on the non-fiction book by Stephen Rebello that tracks how Hitchcock, at the height of his game as a director, decided to make a “lowly” horror movie.

There are so many ways for a "biopic" to go wrong: actors who mistake caricature for character, history that's been sanitized to make for a more simplistic story; filmmakers who admire their subjects too much to be truly frank and honest about their flaws, and on and on. The light and unexpectedly colorful new bio-pic known simply as Hitchcock suffers from a variety of the standard problems, and perhaps even a few egregious ones -- but there's also a handsome look, admirable tone, and a lot of amusing novelty to be found in Sacha Gervasi's affectionate story about the mad genius who made Psycho. Those who are looking for a scandalous tell-all biopic of the man who gave us Rear Window, Vertigo, Strangers on a Train, and North By Northwest may find this rendition a bit over-scrubbed and, yes, sanitized -- but taken as a sly and affectionate look...

Anthony Hopkins doesn’t look one damn bit like Alfred Hitchcock, but he puts on one helluva show in his most engaging, hilarious and even sympathetic performance years in director Sascha Gervasi’s new film on the famed director. Less a biopic and more a hypothetical look at the master of suspense, Hopkins is smart enough not to try and imitate Hitchcock, but present his own interpretation. Where HBO’s recently aired The Girl, focused on Hitchcock’s obsession and manipulation of his leading lady Tippi Hedren, during the making of The Birds, Gervasi’s film is centered not just around the production of Psycho, but the director crossing back and forth between the line that separates the fantasy of cinema and the realities of success, fame and failure.
