In Pixar’s new animated short-form series, “Cars on the Road” (currently streaming on Disney+), creator/director and animator Steve Purcell puts Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) on a cross-country trek full of cinematic nostalgia. The stops include homages to the stop-motion dinosaurs of Ray Harryhausen, the Overlook Hotel from “The Shining,” and retro sci-fi movies.
“We wanted to send them on a road trip [to the wedding of Mater’s sister], and make it so that each place they stop was its own mini-adventure,” Purcell told IndieWire. “And that afforded us a lot of opportunity to create all these different, interesting locations, each with its own sensibility, style of music.”
Producer Marc Sondheimer added that in spite of the series’ short-form nature, it still contains 65 minutes of content. And it’s tied together in episodic form. “The launch of Disney+ afforded us a different form factor to tell these stories in...

Produced by Marc Sondheimer, the series’ episodes are directed by Steve Purcell, Bobby Podesta and Brian Fee. Composer Jake Monaco created the score for all nine episodes.

Pete Docter, director and co-writer of Pixar’s “Soul,” appraised his co-workers by saying, “This team is crazy good.”
The film entailed four years of production and hundreds of workers. “I think most of the team were excited to stretch outside the box of what people might expect from an animated movie. Subjects like why are we alive? What are we doing with our time on Earth?” Docter says. He notes that the film, a hot contender during the long Oscar season, owes a lot to “individual contributors and these great leaders who help shape and direct the work.”
Ren Klyce, supervising sound editor
“We knew sound would be crucial. Ren created sounds and we auditioned them; the sound started to influence the way we visualized it. We hadn’t started building the Great Before and asked Ren, ‘What’s the ambience of the place?’ He brought in elements of nature sounds,...

Pete Docter was at his most inquisitive on “Soul.” That’s because, unlike the Emoji-like personalities that embodied “Inside Out,” the animated characters that inhabit Pixar’s celestial fantasy are more abstract. “What do souls look like? What are they made of? Where do they come from?,” asked director and chief creative officer Docter. “There must’ve been something before we were born that somehow infused us with the essence of who we are.”
And so Pixar went on its most ambitious exploration yet to solve the problem of creating these ethereal characters of The Great Before. That’s the pre-birth training center where aspiring jazz pianist Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) finds himself after eluding death in The Great Beyond. He teams up with risk averse new soul, 22 (Tina Fey), on a journey to discover the meaning of life in Pixar’s first Black-led feature. “Fundamentals that came through again...

“Every session will be available online, allowing anyone to attend anywhere in the world,” said Gutierrez. “This is a fantastic chance to grow the View community and to welcome into our family participants who are unable to travel to Torino or buy a full access pass.”

Toy Story 3 3D Blu-Ray Combo Pack Walt Disney Home Entertainment 2010/Rated G/Running Time 103 Mins List Price: $49.99 – Available November 1, 2011 “What do you think is gonna happen Woody, Andy's going to take you with him to college?” That's a question raised by the old prospector (Kelsey Grammer) in Toy Story 2 and a decade later, the third chapter in the series builds upon it. It's probably fitting that we've all had to wait so long for another sequel to the first full length computer animated film, because time is never on a toy's side, yet the subject makes compelling story telling. Lee Unkrich, who co-directed the previous film as well as Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc., finally gets full directing duties for perhaps one of Pixar's best films. Though not as emotionally powerful as Toy Story 2, this sequel is the darkest and most adult oriented of the three, raising...

Isn't it a law of nature that a sequel is rarely as good as the original? As for a second sequel, you might as well bet on a snowball's chances in Hell. It is because these rules generally hold that you could be forgiven for anticipating Toy Story 3 with skepticism. The fact that it comes 11 years after Toy Story 2 would be further cause to lower your expectations. We are talking Disney-Pixar, here though. This is a company for whom the nearest thing to a flop has been Cars. That film has hardly disappeared into obscurity. That the made-in-heaven partnership between these companies has such a stellar record shows they have talent on their books. It only seems natural, then, that Toy Story 3 bucks the trend for second sequels.

Toy Story 3 is out on Blu-Ray and DVD, and while I was not quite as taken with the film as most people, the home release exceeds even the standards we have come to expect from Pixar. The special feature effort is beyond just about anything else you’ll find, and more importantly, it is filled with interesting, quality bonuses.
The extras you get are really too numerous to mention, though I’ll try below, and the overall effort is amazing. Of course, when you’re the number one animated film ever, and can pretty safely predict that as an outcome, you can put a lot of resources behind more than just the film itself.
It’s likely that few people really need a lot of sell for this purchase, but below you can check out quite a bit to help you out, including – previews of the bonuses, an interview...

Toy Story 3 Quick Thoughts:
I feel as if I have now seen Toy Story 3 the way it was meant to be seen... in 2D. The fact these films are released in theaters in 3D with a massive marketing blitz and then delivered to Blu-ray and DVD with absolutely no mention of 3D is proof positive no film needs or benefits from 3D. Is anyone going to argue Toy Story 3 is less of a film in 2D? Based on the marketing of the theatrical release one would expect the studio to feel that way, but good luck getting them to trash the cash cow that is the DVD and Blu-ray release of one of 2010's biggest films. Best of all, this film doesn't need gimmicks to prove it's great, because it's just that... great.
I'm not going to go too in-depth on the film itself because I think...

Toy Story 3 has become the world's #1 animated film in box office history. An accomplishment that will be difficult for any future animated release to beat, even by Pixar themselves.Disney/Pixar has just released all of the details regarding the DVD/Blu-Ray that will be hitting store shelves on November 2nd, 2010. But they've also packaged it in a 10 disc set called The Ultimate Toy Box Collection.Of course you don't have to purchase the box set to enjoy Toy Story 3, especially if you've already purchased Toy Story 1 & 2 on Blu-Ray or DVD. Toy Story 3 looks certain to continue Pixar's 15-year flopless run. But what lies behind this uncanny success? And who are the men fighting to extend it?
Last month in the Us, Pixar Animation Studios debuted their latest release, Toy Story 3, to the tune of $110m (£72m) and glowing reviews from all corners of the media. It's a familiar refrain for the company. In 15 years of making movies, they've never had a flop. Their competitors have tried and failed to come close to their level of critical acclaim. And while the law of diminishing returns affects most sequels, Pixar's Toy Story follow-ups have only heightened the experience of the original. What is it about the Emeryville, California-based company that has allowed this unparalleled run of success?

Lead animators and Pixar veterans Bobby Podesta and Mike Venturini visited Edinburgh International Film Festival this week for the UK Premiere of Toy Story 3. Screening only 24 hours after opening in the USA, it was the first chance to see the film this side of the Atlantic.
I met with Bobby and Mike to discuss the Festival, Toy Story 3, and their approach to animation.
“For me, I really love the approach to filmmaking that we have at the studio. We make films that resonate with us in one way or another, with good stories. That’s the most important thing,” says Bobby.
Edinburgh International Film Festival has hosted popular UK Premieres of Ratatouille, Wall-e, and Up. However, success was not a foregone conclusion, and Mike explained that, “we kind of know our audience, and when I say ‘our audience’ I mean our American audience. Sometimes, culturally, you don’t...

Day 5 is probably the most exhausting day I’ve had yet!
Despite predictions of rain, the sun continues its stunning conquest upon Edinburgh, and a few tan lines are beginning to show… Not really, as we’re all sitting in the dark enjoying the screenings…
The day began with High School, a comedy in which top-of-the-class Henry (Matt Bush) reconnects with his burn-out friend Travis (Sean Marquette) and do what Travis does best – get high. Soon after, the principal of their school announces that he is mandating a drug test of the entire student body. The only logical conclusion? Everybody must get stoned. Adrien Brody gives an outlandish performance as Crazy Ed, their drug dealer. The chaos that ensues is hilarious, with plenty of laughs peppered throughout. With a straight-laced Michael Chiklis as the school Principle and Colin Hanks getting loose as the cool vice-dean, it’s The Girl Next Door...
Despite predictions of rain, the sun continues its stunning conquest upon Edinburgh, and a few tan lines are beginning to show… Not really, as we’re all sitting in the dark enjoying the screenings…

MakingOf recently paid a visit to the Pixar Studios in Emeryville, CA and sat down with "Toy Story 3" supervising animators Bobby Podesta and Mike Venturini and story supervisor Jason Katz. Below is the full transcript of our roundtable interview.
Q: What was it like to revisit these characters? Especially in terms of the animation.
Bobby: For animation it was a really interesting process, because we had to figure out how we were going to animate these characters and move them around and everything. Also, there’s a large contingent of animators in our department that actually had never worked on “Toy Story” or “Toy Story 2” and grew up and were kind of fans of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2” and were scared to animate “Toy Story 3.” So what we did is we actually collected what we thought was like, here’s the best of shots, the work that really stands out,...

Check out part 1 & part 2 of Dave in the USA.
Today has been one of the most crazy but cool days of the eventful year that HeyUGuys has been in existence. Today was the day where we got to go to Pixar Animation Studios, meet Toy Story 3 director, Lee Unkrich, Supervising Animators, Bobby Podesta & Mike Venturini, 3D Stereoscopic Artist, Bob Whitehill and TS3 producer, Darla K. Anderson.
We also have a couple of cameos from John Lasseter and Ed Catmull which was a wonderful surprise as I don’t think even the organisers knew they were going to be there. I’ve placed a few photos of me having fun at Pixar and with some of the people mentioned above but check out the video below for a run-down of my day!
