British TV presenter Fiona Phillips announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia.
Now, in an interview, the 62-year-old former TV host has revealed she believes her 11-year run of presenting breakfast television could have caused her to get the disease at a relatively young age.
Phillips, who used to get up at around 3am for her shifts presenting ITV breakfast show GMTV between 1997 and 2008, told Woman&Home Magazine:
“I ask myself why I got this dreadful disease. I wonder whether all the years of getting up so early when I was working on GMTV contributed to me getting Alzheimer’s so young.”
Phillips shared that she had benefited from being put on a drugs trial in an attempt to slow down her symptoms, a protocol she said seemed to be working.
She said: “I’m taking part in a revolutionary drug trial that’s trying to find a cure.

Teen dramas aren't just for teens anymore. In 2022, "Euphoria" became HBO's second most-watched series ever, and season 3 of Mindy Kaling's comedy-drama "Never Have I Ever" continued to attract a massive audience of viewers of all ages. The genre simply continues to expand, to the delight of its many fans.
Perhaps teen dramas persist because becoming an adult is a universally complex stage of life. In her book "Teen TV," Dr. Stefania Marghitu writes, "Certain narrative elements present themselves in nearly every teen series: the protagonist feels alienated from the adolescent world she is on the threshold of entering. This conflict is intertwined with a passionate story of first love and new discoveries during the transition from child to adult." Even for viewers who are no longer teens, the thrills, pains, and misunderstandings of youth aren't too difficult to remember.

Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

Last week, from the 17th to the 24th of November, Thought Bubble – the Leeds comic art festival – took place at various venues across the city, culminating in the centre-piece two day convention on the 23rd and 24th at Clarence Dock. I got a chance to visit the convention on the last two days (two-day passes for the general public were a very reasonable £22, incidentally). It was the first comic book convention I have ever been to and therefore an entirely new experience for me, so I thought I’d give my views on it…
I arrived in Leeds with friends on the Friday afternoon and immediately scoped out the venue. Clarence Dock consists of New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries Hall and Allied London Hall.

The station's new director of daytime Helen Warner wants the popular presenter back on ITV in a bid to boost ratings, The Mirror reports.
Daybreak's New York correspondent Lucy Watson and Newshour host Ranvir Singh are said to be in the running to be his new co-host, but the 53-year-old wants wife Ruth Langsford on board. The pair already host This Morning on Fridays.

Bruno Tonioli says Kate Garraway, Fiona Phillips and Ann Widdecombe have been the worst ever 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestants. The former 'GMTV' hosts and the Tory MP have all taken part in the BBC One show and while they have been hit with viewers, judge Bruno wasn't impressed with their moves. When asked who the worst contestants have been, he said: ''The 'GMTV' girls - Fiona Phillips and Kate Garraway - danced as though their bodies had been filleted of all bones. And Ann Widdecombe, bless her, was just dragged round the dancefloor week after week. I don't think it's ever been...

Fiona Phillips has opened up about her fear that she will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The 51-year-old presenter admitted that she feels destined to succumb to dementia, which hit her late parents by the time they were in their 60s. When people say they might be around until their 80s, I just don't think that. "I suppose I feel like someone with a terminal disease who realises they don't have long left. Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has hit out at Ann Widdecombe, saying that her appearance on the show is a “a joke too far”.
The So You Think You Can Dance panellist thinks that show bosses are pushing Ann to become the next John Sergeant, but she insists that the public will tire of the former Tory MP.
Arlene told The Sun: “I don’t know whether Ann will be as interesting as John or last as long. She could be somebody who people get bored with very quickly.”
Phillips tipped Felicity Kendal and Pamela Stephenson to do well on the series but added that rugby star Gavin Henson will regret signing up for the dance extravaganza.
She said:
“He’ll regret this. On the launch show, unhappy was the word that sprang to mind.”
Arlene isn’t a fan of Coronation Street star Tina O’Brien either.

The former Celebrity Big Brother winner was called into the Diary Room for a chat with Bb and emerged in tears, though she has not yet discussed what she was told.

She added: “I also hate people who cry all the time.

25 year old Fiona Robertson may face the sack from her job, after she called in sick to audition for the X Factor.
Fiona tried out for the show in Cardiff earlier this year but when bosses saw her picture in the paper, they realised that she had called in sick to work in order to be there.
She now faces disciplinary action in Wookey Hole Caves, Somerset, where she dresses up daily as The Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz.
Director Daniel Medley told The Sun:
“We feel we have been used and very let down that she used her fame here to further her career while still working for us.”
Fiona added: “I will apologise so hopefully I can keep my job.”
She even admitted that the lie hadn’t been worth telling, after the judges remained distinctly unimpressed by her audition.
She added: “The judges weren’t very impressed.

Fiona Phillips has praised Adrian Chiles's move to GMTV. Chiles announced yesterday that he has signed a deal to move from the BBC to ITV and will become the main anchor on GMTV five days a week. Phillips, who left the show in 2008, has now claimed that Chiles will be a good host on the programme. Writing in The Mirror, she said: "Although the arrival of Adrian Chiles at GMTV will inevitably mean turmoil for some of my mates still manning the sofa, it is a move akin to a perfectly placed free-kick for him. "The blokeishly charming One Show star inherits a programme that's well-loved, but also tired and in need of an injection of heavyweight sparkle. Strictly Come Dancing bosses are reportedly making way for Arlene Phillps to return for the next series of the show.
Arlene was sacked from the judging panel last year and replaced by singer and former Strictly winner, Alesha Dixon. Dixon has been coy about whether or not she intends to return to the show, with her manager even describing it as ’so last year.’
The 66 year old choreographer has previously said that she would never return, but seems to be softening her stance on the subject.
A source told The News Of The World: “Last year she said she’d never go back. But she’s been on the Strictly tour with Len, Bruno and Craig, and remembered how much fun they have.
“She’s concentrating on her new show So You Think You Can Dance but her position on Strictly is never say never. She’s made sure she has time in her schedule.

Arlene Phillips has revealed that she thinks tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing final will be the best we’ve ever seen.
The former judge on the BBC’s dance show said it was ‘anybody’s guess’ whether Chris Hollins or Ricky Whittle would walk away with the glitter ball trophy.
“It couldn’t be a greater final,” she told The Mirror. “You have got two really, really strong dancers – one is technically brilliant, but emotionally, does he deliver? And the other one is delivering every ounce of his little heart.
“What better final could we have? It’s anybody’s guess and that’s what we want in a final.”

Arlene Phillips has admitted that she ‘lost confidence’ in herself after being sacked from Strictly Come Dancing earlier this year.
Phillips admitted that she wasn’t expecting the news and was completely shocked by the BBC’s decision.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, Phillips explained: “The hardest thing was that I lost confidence in myself because of it. I think anyone would in that position, when you believe you’re doing a good job and then discover you’re not.
“I’m a harsh critic, but I’m my own harshest critic, so when I let somebody go there has to be a big reason for it. What happened was such a shock that I almost couldn’t take it in, and that hasn’t stopped. Not a day goes by that I don’t get letters and emails about it.”
