THR is reporting today that Kevin James is set to headline an upcoming football drama titled 44. Based on the true story of Joey Williams, the film will revolve around the father of four who “returned to college to complete his degree and fulfill a lifelong dream of playing collegiate football. In the process, however, he instead found himself competing alongside his college-aged son at the same university.”
44 is said to be in the vein of The Blind Side, meaning that it will be a feel-good, inspirational tale, and in an interview with NPR, Williams explained his story as such:
I received an injury in high school that kept me from finishing my high school football career. I had a scholarship to a university there in Tennessee, but turned it down, because I was afraid I would have a problem walking in the future, if I ever had another knee injury.

Chicago – It would be easy to dismiss “Heaven Is for Real,” given that it is based on the visions of the afterlife by a child, that just happens to coincide perfectly with Christian doctrine (Jesus, Angels, etc.). But there is more to this film in the sincerity of its spirituality, and it succeeds with that inspiration.

The key was establishing a viable authenticity to the atmosphere of the vision, and get the right cast to deliver it, which director Randall Wallace (“Secretariat,” “We Were Soldiers”) was able to accomplish. He creates a hometown America that is part of the scenario, a luxurious and spacious hinterland of unyielding peace. The juxtaposition of the otherworldly garden of the boy’s vision with the wonder of earth creates a “heaven” that is for real, if we open our eyes. That spirit of simplicity becomes the kingdom.

Chicago – The actor Greg Kinnear has been known for his neat and tidy image, but never has he portrayed a religious leader. His role as Todd Burpo – a pastor of a church and the father whose son believes “Heaven Is for Real” – brings the energy of spirituality to the movies just in time for the Easter holiday.
Born in small town Logansport, Indiana, Greg Kinnear was the son of a career diplomat, and moved around quite a bit as a child, even living overseas. He is a veteran actor who first came into prominence when he hosted the first version of “Talk Soup” on the E! Network in 1991. Four years later, he made a splashy film debut as David Larrabee in the 1995 remake of Billy Wilder’s “Sabrina,” directed by Sydney Pollack.

Chicago – “B Boys” – or as they’re known by the more familiar term as break dancers – are high energy street performers who combine gymnastic moves with tight choreographed dance. This all comes together in a film depicting an international competition called “Battle of the Year.”

Although updated to now – with sneaker endorsements and hip-hop beats – it’s still about the show, and overcoming the obstacles to get to the so-called Battle of the Year. We Were Soldiers and Secretariat director Randall Wallce is set to develop a faith-based drama for Sony Pictures called Heaven is Real. The movie is based on a book written by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent, called Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back.
This is definitely a different kind of film for Wallace who also wrote Braveheart and Pearl Harbor, the latter of which wasn't his best work. The book tells the true story behind Burpo's son's near-death experience and subsequent claim that he visited heaven. His family and the members of his small town do not believe him until his stories identify people who have passed away.
I can see a movie like this being a big hit. It's based on a true story, it's interesting, and there's an epic faith-based market out there for this kind of film.

Since writing films like Braveheart and Pearl Harbor and directing We Were Soldiers, Randall Wallace made a major shift to a purely inspirational family drama a few years ago with the horse racing Disney hit Secretariat. Now, according to a new report from Variety he’s headed even further down that path with a new project.
The trade reports that he has signed with Sony for a new faith-based family film titled Heaven Is For Real, but only to develop for now with sights set on possibly coming on as director. Mulan II and Battle of the Year writer Christopher Parker adapted Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent‘s hit novel Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, which you can read a synopsis of below thanks to Amazon.
