Theatrical producer and director; founder in 1954 of the New York
Shakespeare Festival and in 1967 of the Public Theatre. Through his
efforts and foresight, "Hair" (1967) and "A Chorus Line" (1975), among
other productions, came to the Broadway stage. (The latter became the
longest-running musical in Broadway history.)

Edward R. Murrow High School had its theater named after him (The
Joseph Papp Theater).
His new version of The Pirates of Penzeance was nominated for a
Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 2001 (2000 season) for Outstanding
Musical Production.
While working as the stage manager of "I've Got a Secret", recited Marc
Antony's speech during the program's 5th Anniversary show. This episode
was re-broadcast on the Game Show Network in December, 2001.
