Despite amassing a rather significant amount at the 1998 Hong Kong box office, reaching more than 41 million Hk$ in revenue, “The Storm Riders” was essentially a flop, since its budget was more than double that amount. This, however, did not prevent the movie from achieving cult status later on, particularly for its over-the-top action scenes and the imposing presence of Sonny Chiba.

Hong Kong multi-hyphenate Peter Chan Ho-sun is far too intellectual to call himself an “arms dealer,” as Sony Pictures has in casting itself as an unattached supplier to streaming platforms.
But politeness and Bob Dylan references aside, Chan’s new company, Changin’ Pictures, aims to become a major independent purveyor of premium Asian TV content for the streamers. The company is using this week’s Busan International Film Festival as its launchpad and will unveil the first five series of its 20-title pan-Asian slate.
Chan’s thesis is that global audiences are hungry for Asian content but have not been able to access it easily under legacy film and TV distribution systems. With streaming making everything accessible everywhere, and audiences no longer balking at subtitles, quality Asian drama can and will travel.

Projects starring Donnie Yen and Zhang Ziyi are among the independently produced TV series to be launched on the sidelines of this week’s Busan International Film Festival. ★☆☆☆☆ A Saw wannabe from Hong Kong-based director Danny Pang, Fairy Tale Killer (2012) sees a work-obsessed cop investigate a series of bizarre, grotesque murders that lead him closer to home than he first expected. It's a crime mystery that falls flat on its face in its poor attempts at being complex and interesting, with scenes that should be visually impressive impaired by the surprisingly amateurish filmmaking and terrible acting. Inspired by David Fincher's Se7en (1995) and with similarities to Fincher's 2007 effort Zodiac, the premise of Fairy Tale Killer looks promising on paper, but disappoints in practice.
The execution of the convoluted plot turns into a laughable affair largely aided by Baogiang Wang's ridiculous and distasteful performance as a mentally disabled murderer. The rest of the cast are marginally better, with the usually reliable Lau Ching Wan delivering the strongest, but still rather lacklustre, performance as lead police officer Han. What...

Director: Danny Pang. Review: Adam Wing. The last time the Pang Brothers scored a hit was in 2006 with fantasy horror yarn, Re-cycle. Their collaborations have fared better than their solo offerings, but with The Detective, Diary and Abnormal Beauty under his belt, Oxide is the more reliable of the two. Danny has made some real clunkers along the way, including snooze-fest Forest of Death and In Love with the Dead. There's no doubting the visual prowess of either brother, but when it comes to great storytelling, fan favourites like The Eye and Bangkok Dangerous are fast becoming distant memories. Psycho-thriller Fairy Tale Killer is written and directed by Danny Pang, in collaboration with Thai director of photography Decha Srimantra (The Eye, Chocolate). In Lau Ching Wan (Mad Detective), Fairy Tale Killer has found a strong lead actor, but Danny also casts Wang Bao Qiang (Blind Shaft), Elanne Kwong (The Child's...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Children's stories walk hand in hand with murder, right? Well they do in Danny Pang's world, and Fairy Tale Killer is the latest in a long line of atmospheric horror movies from the creator of The Eye. It's been a while since he delivered on his promise, but there are plenty of scares to be found in this gruesome crime thriller about a serial killer that finds inspiration in classic fables. Hardly groundbreaking, but the Pang Brothers are due a return to form. Lau Ching Wan (Life Without Principle) stars as the troubled cop on the case, while Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree) becomes the deranged killer responsible for the bloody deaths. Elanne Kwong (Love Lifting), Lam Suet, Elena Kong and Joey Meng are along for the ride, and you can catch it in the U.K. sooner than you think. Fairy Tale Killer arrives on U.K. shores October 7th 2013 courtesy of Terror Cotta.

Danny Pang, still best known as one half of the brotherly directorial duo responsible for the 2002 hit “The Eye”, takes another shot at recapturing his past form with “Fairy Tale Killer”, which as its title suggests follows the police hunt for a murderer who bases his methods around children’s fables. As with any Pang production, the film is a glossy affair with slick visuals, and this time has a couple of big headlining stars in Lau Ching Wan (“Life Without Principle”) and Wang Baoqiang (“Mr. Tree”), with support from the likes of Elanne Kwong (“Love Lifting”), Elena Kong (“A Simple Life”), Joey Meng (“All About Love”), and ultra prolific Hong Kong character actor Lam Suet (“The Great Magician”). The film opens with a strange, stammering young man with white face makeup called Ng (Wang Baoqiang) turning up at the police station of Inspector Wong (Lau Ching Wan) and confessing to a murder.

I'm not quite sure how they do it, but the Pang Bros keep producing films at an excruciating pace, be it by themselves or in collaborative efforts. I'm not one to complain though, I'm always in for a bit of ultra-stylized Pang wizardry, especially when Oxide is pulling all the string. While Sleepwalkers (Meng You 3D) won't be remembered as Oxide Pang's most exciting effort, the overall quality guarantees a very fine piece of entertainment.Even though Danny Pang (In Love With The Dead, Seven 2 One) made a few solid solo projects, Oxide Pang (Mon Seung, The Detective, The Detective 2, Basic Love, Som And Bank) remains the most talented of the two brothers. Oxide Pang has a certain visual flair that is virtually unmatched,...

Tracking killers who commit fairy tale-themed murders is clearly hard work, as evidenced by the handful of new images from Danny Pang’s 2012 thriller “Fairy Tale Killer”. Wang Baoqiang stars as a serial killer who goes toe-to-toe with a seasoned cop (Sean Lau) who specializes in handling unusual cases. Pang’s eye for eerie visuals certainly seems to be in full effect, and I can’t wait to see more. In addition to the latest batch of images — which are pretty darn cool, by the way — the previously-released trailer can be found embedded below. All of them are worth a bit of your free time if you have a bit to spare. If you’re reading this, you probably do. What happens when violent crimes start to resemble fairy tales? You put a seasoned cop in charge of the investigations. I first read about director Danny Pang’s upcoming thriller “Fairy Tale Killer” (aka “Perfect Fairy Tale”) way back in 2010, though everything has been strangely quiet since then. Until now, that is. Below you’ll find the first creepy trailer for the flick, as well as a fairly nifty poster to help promote the flick’s May release date. Pang usually does good work — “The Eye 10″ and the remake of “Bangkok Dangerous” being the clear exceptions to that statement — so it will be interesting to see how this visionary filmmaker tackles a subject that seems to be quite popular right now. Here’s hoping he does something cool with it. The trailer for “Fairy Tale Killer”, which stars Ching Wan Lau, resides below. It’s worth a look, I think...

Lau Ching Wan, one of the best actors working in Hong Kong today, is back with the new film Fairy Tale Killer. The film is directed by Danny Pang, who is most famous for the films in which he collaborated with his older twin Oxide Pang, in particular the classic 2002 horror film The Eye. While many of the films from the Pang brothers over the years were disappointing, Fairy Tale Killer may fare better thanks to a strong cast including Lau and award-winning co-star Wang Bao Qiang (Blind Shaft, Assembly, A World Without Thieves), as well as a screenplay from Szeto Kam Yuen who wrote the scripts for some of the best Milkyway Image productions (Exiled, A Hero Never Dies, Expect The Unexpected, The Longest...

The Pang twins will direct an ensemble cast led by LauChing-wan and Louis Koo, who will reunite after starring in 2009’s Overheard and its 2011 sequel, with the former playing a firefighter. When it comes to horror films, Americans must humbly bow their heads and concede defeat to their international brethren. Sure, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, George Romero and others deserve all the accolades they've received, but as the below films prove, clever horror knows no American territoriality.
Eerie houses, ghost eyes, and sadistic doctors can be found anywhere.
Here are nine extremely scary exports every horror fan needs to see.
'The Eye' (2002)
Country: Hong Kong
Why So Scary: You'll hear this a lot from us, but skip the 2008 remake starring Jessica Alba (if you even remember it) and check out the Pang brothers' tale of a blind woman who receives a corneal transplant and begins seeing strange, dark figures everywhere she goes. It'd be a betrayal to give away any more than that. Let's just say we dug our fingers into the seat cushion more times than we'd like to admit.

The Pang Brothers made a name for themselves with 2002’s The Eye; the lasting impression it left was for Hollywood to remake it. Unfortunately for their latest effort The Child’s Eye, it likely won’t receive such treatment. The film isn’t truly awful but it isn’t very good either, playing for real scares and atmosphere it fails on both counts. It was intended for the audience to experience it in 3D, but on DVD it is just in 2D and the gimmick is apparent and it looks laughable.

The latest supernatural thriller from Hong Kong director Oxide Pang sees him flying solo without twin brother and regular collaborator Danny Pang, but reuniting professionally with wife Angelica Lee Sinje. Due for release in Hong Kong on 3 November, Universe has finally released the first trailer, which appears to again combine spooky atmospherics with CG-heavy otherworldly environments that featured heavily in the earlier Pang/Lee features, The Eye and Recycle. The trailer depicts Lee sporting a rather shocking mop of hair which achieves the incredibly difficult task of making her look decidedly less than attractive. Her character appears to be a long-suffering somnabulist who may or may not have murdered her husband during one of her nighttime excursions. Huo Si Yan plays the cop out to solve...

Reviews on it have been mixed, but surely it’s a must for Asian horror fans and all things Pang? The Pang Brothers horror The Child's Eye - the first ever Hong Kong film shot completely in digital 3D - is heading for the U.S on DVD, and we’ve just picked up on the artwork and release date. Eye stars Taiwanese idol Rainie Yang, with Shawn Yue, Elanne Kong, Gordon Lam and Jo Koo in an old-school horror story about a group of youngsters trapped in a run-down Bangkok hotel filled with terrifying secrets. Child’s Eye streets in the States on October 11. Synopsis: Stranded in Thailand by the political uprising and airport closure, Rainie and her friends were unable to return home. Rainie Yang and her pooch feel the terror in The Child's Eye.
The Child’s Eye, the fourth installment of the Hong Kong horror-thriller franchise The Eye that was launched by The Pang Brothers (Bangkok Dangerous) nearly a decade ago, is coming to DVD from Lionsgate on Oct. 11 for the list price of $26.98.
Just as they directed The Eye (2002), The Eye 2 (2004) and the bafflingly titled third film in the trilogy The Eye 10 (2005), The Pang Brothers (Oxide and Danny) are back behind the camera as the directors of 2010’s The Child’s Eye, which focuses on a group of friends who find themselves stranded in Thailand after unexpected airport closures. Unfortunately, they have no choice but to stay at the Chung Tai Hotel, an old, rundown and way-creepy building. As the group uncovers the history behind the hotel’s walls, they’re slowly drawn into its horrific past. And the more sinister,...

The MPAA just came back with ratings for several horror and thriller themed movies most notably Red State from Kevin Smith and The Howling Reborn. People who checked out the leaked trailer for The Howling Reborn compared it to The Twilight Saga. So was the werewolf action of this reboot watered down enough that it earned a PG-13 rating like the franchise that it evoked? Did Kevin Smith, who has had trouble with the MPAA in the past most famously for Clerks which originally earned an Nc-17 for language, run into trouble with the big bad old MPAA again? Here's the ratings the MPAA handed down on Boy Wonder, The Howling: Reborn, Red State and The Child's Eye.

Kind of hard to keep up when there are lots of projects coming out of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival this year. On the plus side, though, many of the diverse offerings are landing on our horror radar, which we're then happy to pass along to you!
Screen Daily tells us that Hong Kong's Universe Films Distribution has secured North American distribution on the Pang Brothers' (The Eye) 3D horror The Child’s Eye (sounds like they're really shaking it up!) through Grindstone Entertainment. A box office success in the Asian market, we're looking forward to getting the chance to give it a go.
The Hollywood Reporter opened the floodgates on an entire slew on genre-based titles, including writer/director Rowan Joffe's (28 Weeks Later) Before I Go to Sleep - a psychological horror film about an amnesiac woman who has no memories of her married life.

Although probably still best known for their 2002 horror hit, The Eye, the Pang Brothers have never stopped working. In the decade since, they have experienced further success with Recycle and Storm Warriors, as well as burned their fingertips in the Hollywood cauldron with The Messengers and their ill-advised remake of their own Bangkok Dangerous with Nicholas Cage. The twins have also indulged in solo projects, with no greater success than older brother Oxide's 2007 supernatural snooper, The Detective. At the time, star Aaron Kwok was riding a wave of critical praise in the wake of award-winning performances in Divergence and After This Our Exile, while the project gave Oxide the opportunity to work in their beloved Bangkok. The result was a smart, spooky...

Opening with the infectious sound of a popular Thai song, The Detective quickly introduces us to the titular private dick Tam (Aaron Kwok), a somewhat dim-witted but persistent character who quickly becomes enveloped in a complex case involving a missing girl.
In other hands this engrossing but relatively simplistically plotted mystery story could have played in number of different ways but with Oxide Pang in the driving seat the writing is on the wall. Oxide Pang has risen to prominence as one half of the ‘Pang Brothers’, who over the past twenty years have carved out a number of visually striking but almost entirely surface level films that have led to a number of Us remakes (remade by the brothers themselves) that have managed to generally rob the originals of what little they had to begin with.

Director: Oxide Pang. Review: Adam Wing. The Pang Brothers are back. The most infuriating filmmakers in the world today, Danny and Oxide Pang have been taking us on a ride to cinematic Heaven and Hell for the past twelve years. Often inspiring, often insipid, you get the idea. They’ve been making films together since the dawn of time (not bad for a pair of directors still in their forties) and for every work of art (Bangkok Dangerous, The Eye, Recycle) there has been a work of arse (The Messengers, The Eye Infinity, The Storm Warriors). Their solo projects are even more puzzling, ranging from intermittently entertaining to darn right annoying. Of the two brothers Danny would appear to be the least talented behind the camera, either that or his choice of solo projects have been decidedly dubious. In Love With The Dead, Forest Of Death and Leave Me Alone...

"The Last Supper" will be directed by Lu Chuan, who won the best director award of Asian Film Awards last year. Oxide Pang’s The Detective was a pretty big hit across seas, so it’s no surprise they decided to make a sequel. The gritty supernatural thriller, set in Bangkok, featured some great performances, most noteably by Aaron Kwok and Oxide Pang (who is of course one half of the Pang Brothers). The trailer for The Detective 2 is now online, and the plot feels a little darker this time around.

Released theatrically in Hong Kong 11 years after its predecessor, Storm Warriors is a sequel to the 1998 movie Storm Riders. Despite pretty boys Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok returning as the warriors Wind and Cloud, the two films split into two directions. Different directors, different visions.
The Pang Brothers take artistic influence to a new level. Each film they release seems to copy the style of a recently successful contemporary: Bangkok Dangerous reeks of Tsui Hark, The Eye follows the footsteps of Takashi Shimizu, and Storm Warriors blatantly looks like it was directed by a poor man’s Zack Snyder.
Shot extensively, though not entirely, on bluescreen, the film uses 300-style CGI backgrounds and its trademark annoying stop-start slow-motion action scenes; except it obviously has 1/10 of the budget so they just look like a daytime children’s program that has the human host dancing in front of a cartoon landscape.
