Do we want to see Australian drama, comedy and kids shows on screens in the coming years? With Minister Paul Fletcher and the Federal Government’s choices, Australian screen storytelling will pretty much disappear or be reduced to a shriveled novelty.
Right now in the UK and the Us people are using the Covid-19 production shutdown to power ahead with script development, ready to film as soon as it’s possible again. That can’t happen here if content quotas are dismantled and creative people are left reeling from months without financial support.
Our screen industry was already being squeezed by reduced funding and by the distorted economic shape that the streaming giants create for a country like ours. Things were already precarious. And now this.
The result of current policies will mean that for years and years after Covid, our screens will be flooded with overseas content – most of it American,...

The co-creator of Offspring has deplored the decline of the 13-episode Australian drama and criticised the shift to shorter-run .puzzle. dramas. .I feel quite sad that the 13-parter seems to be fading in Australia,. Debra Oswald said in an interview for the Swinburne Institute for Social Research.s report TV 2025: Reconsidering small screen media in Australia by Jock Given, Michael Brealey and Cathy Gray.

Hollywood extravaganza The Great Gatsby dominates movie category while Redfern Now scoops best drama series

A David-and-Goliath battle between a low budget film set in Laos and an extravagant Hollywood production of The Great Gatsby ended with the giant victorious at Australia's Academy Awards, the Aactas
Baz Luhrmann's blockbuster, filmed entirely in Sydney studios with computer graphics helping to create the F Scott Fitzgerald story's Long Island and New York backdrops, took six of the top prizes on 30 January, including best film, director, and adapted screenplay for Luhrmann and long-time collaborator Craig Pearce. This brought its tally to 13 following its sweep of the craft awards announced two days earlier at the country's top annual film and TV awards.

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

Debra Oswald won the Script Writing Award for her work on Channel Ten’s Offspring at last night’s 2011 Nsw Premier’s Literary Awards, held at the Sydney Opera House.
Oswald, a writer of film, television, stage radio and children’s fiction, was awarded a cash prize of $30,000.
The judges said, “The writer immediately grabs us by the lapels and drags us into the world of Nina our obstetrician heroine, a world which is by turns confused, quirky, funny and sad. The characters are three dimensional, the dialogue brisk, and the story takes us with it as it drives forward.”
It is the second time Oswald has won a Premier’s Literary Award. In 2008 she won Best Play for Stories in the Dark.
Asher Keddie received a Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress earlier this month for her lead role as Nina Proudman.
