Barney appeared on the game show
You Bet Your Life (1950) in 1958 and won $1,050. When
Groucho Marx asked what Barney planned on doing with his winnings, Barney
made his scholarship announcement. What Vada & Barney did not realize
was that they would need several thousand more dollars in order to
award an annual scholarship of $1,000. Barney contributed to the fund
by appearing twice as an impostor on To Tell the Truth; by lasting on
Password through the lightening round; for writing a script for Walter
Cronkite's CBS TV program, 20th Century called "The Road to Berlin"; by
turning over all the income for his book, "Never A Shot In Anger; and
by contributing numerous lecture and magazine fees he received.
