Imagine you’re in the middle of watching Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon try to outscore each other in game 5 of the NBA Finals when all of a sudden your broadcasters cut to O.J. Simpson slowly engaging in a police chase. Imagine further that you’re now so invested in the chase that you couldn’t possibly pull yourself from the TV. And who is that you see but Snake Plissken. That’s right, Kurt Russell has direct ties to the O.J. Simpson chase which came a few days after the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman.
As Kate Hudson told Jimmy Kimmel, the family lived near Simpson’s home at the time and Kurt Russell found his opportunity to be part of history. “It was the big chase. And Kurt…O.J. was on the 405 and Kurt all of sudden just went, ‘Oh,...

Exclusive: In a tense moment during the protracted SAG-AFTRA strike when guild negotiators weren’t talking to studios/streamers as film workers faced home foreclosures with no paychecks for six months and no end in sight, George Clooney led other top A-listers in offering to uncap dues and contribute $150 million over three years to guild coffers to help qualify more actors for health benefits and other things. While he has long enjoyed the spoils of an above the line life, Clooney has never forgotten the struggling showbiz underclass he was part of before ER changed his life.
Just in time for Christmas, Clooney taps squarely into those themes with his new film The Boys in the Boat. An adaptation of the Daniel James Brown bestseller, the film tells the underdog story of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that came together under a stern coach who promised those who...

It’s undoubtedly one of the most fiercely debated questions in all of sports: Is today’s brand of NBA basketball better or worse than during the Michael Jordan-led heyday of the 1990s? While discerning sports fans can disagree, there is perhaps no one better equipped to dive into the particulars of that question than longtime NBA journalist (and former NFL All-Pro wide receiver) Ahmad Rashad.
“The thing is about Michael, if you ever ask him, ‘Who’s better you or LeBron?’, you know what his answer is?” Rashad asked The Streamable this week. “‘You can’t compare; we never played against each other, so we’ll never know.’ That’s his answer. It’s one of those things that is a good ‘have a beer’ at a bar argument. Enjoy yourself with the argument and nobody’s wrong. You’re both right!”

Exclusive: Ray Romano will star and produce a new film about the extraordinary life of American basketball coach and broadcaster Jim Valvano.
The script will be written by Jim Strouse, whose credits include Grace Is Gone and The Winning Season. Romano will produce with game1’s Basil Iwanyk, Greg Economou and Mark Ciardi (The Rookie). The Valvano family will provide key resources for the film, serving as executive producers.
Jimmy V’s life is the ultimate underdog story, peppered with courage and optimism when facing long odds. It starts with Valvano’s meteoric coaching ascent, including his astonishing run to the 1983 NCAA Championship with the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The team won a last-second victory over a heavily favored Houston Cougars team that had all time NBA greats Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler on its roster.
Valvano’s optimism never wavered, even when he received a tragic cancer diagnosis. His...

When you think of Michael Jordan, every image seems to evoke moments of greatness. From his intensity on the court to his evolution into a global brand and pop culture icon, the storied visuals of “His Airness” are by now ingrained in our collective memory. That’s why when veteran Chicago sports photographer David Banks finally had the time to look through his archives and organize his photo negatives amid the coronavirus stay-at-home lockdown, he was surprised to find rare images of his that had sat undeveloped for years.

David Stern, the former longtime commissioner of the NBA, died Wednesday following a brain hemorrhage, according to a statement from current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. He was 77.
“David took over the NBA in 1984 with the league at a crossroads,” Silver wrote. “But over the course of 30 years as Commissioner, he ushered in the modern global NBA. He launched groundbreaking media and marketing partnerships, digital assets and social responsibility programs that have brought the game to billions of people around the world.”
Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage on Dec. 12 and underwent emergency surgery.
Stern is the longest-tenured commissioner in NBA history, serving in that role for 30 years from 1984-2014, and is considered to be the among the most important figures in the NBA. So now there’s talk that Lebron James is going to leave Cleveland for Los Angeles in 2018. So what if he did? So what? Who cares? People whine about the fact that Kevin Durant joined Golden State to form a super team. I think people, even people like Charles Barkley forget to realize that even He left Phoenix to join Houston to join Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. Was he doing that for his health? Hell no. He did it to chase a championship that had eluded him. So let’s just cut out all this crap about having to stay

Posterized: when an offensive player athletically and emphatically slam-dunks the ball over an opponent in such a way that will prove their superiority, embarrass the defensive player, and warrant printing on a poster to immortalise the moment.
There’s a common perception that being big and tall makes it easy to play basketball, I wouldn’t call it a misperception, but sometimes it’s just not that fun. Throughout their careers, the biggest and baddest players in the NBA – such as Dikembe Mutombo, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming – have been targeted as guys to dunk on.
Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, LeBron James, Blake Griffin and Kobe Bryant were, and are, all athletic freaks of nature. These guys seemed to have a list of big men they must dunk on before their respective careers are over. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does,...

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.
Yes, we get it. Times are tough and there's comfort in reflection, but enough is enough.
Below, a final goodbye to the 90s to end the nostalgia once and for all. (We're not kidding. There are 1990 items below.)

How sweet would it be to see the future hall-of-fame Canadian suit up for the league’s only Canadian team? It might make the Raptors relevant on a grand stage for the first time since they lead the Atlantic in 2006, passing the Boston Celtics in the standings en route to a playoff appearance. This would be the Raptors second future hall-of-fame signing since Hakeem Olajuwon- yes, that guy – was traded to the Raptors in 2011, where he ended his career.
General Manager Bryan Colangelo has already stated that going after Steve Nash would be the Raptors top, maybe even only, priority this summer. And they’re going to push hard; there’s no question about that. Now that the rumour mill is flooding, multiple sources have already claimed the Raptors will offer Steve Nash (aka Kid Canada) $36 million for three years, with an option for a third year. It almost...

A week ago, this question would have been much easier to answer. Without a championship ring under his belt, LeBron James is merely an explosive all-round forward, a physical specimen and a great player. That is not to say that such a description isn’t impressive, but in the history of NBA many have been considered “great.”
With a ring under his belt however, LeBron James has vaulted himself onto a list of some of the greatest NBA players of all time. Many will argue that he isn’t quite there yet, and that is debatable, but no one can argue that his dominating performances throughout the 2011-2012 playoffs didn’t give him an extraordinary boox.
To begin, it would be advantageous to list players that are definitely above LeBron James. Also, I apologize in advance if certain legends are omitted, but due to the sheer number of greats, it...

There was no word on how Turpin commit suicide or whether he left a note.
According to the New York Times, his sister Margaret Burrus had said Turpin was trying to keep his diabetes in check.
Melvin Harrison "Mel" Turpin was born in Lexington in December 1960. As a center, he had a strong college basketball career and then became the sixth player picked in the 1984 NBA draft that also included Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton and Charles Barkley.

Outside the Lines airs at 9 a.m. Sunday, on Espn. From Espn: High school student Jeremy Tyler drew national attention for his exploits. Now his struggles as a professional in a foreign country are the focus of widespread reporting and speculation. Tyler is a 6-foot-11, 260-pound center whose game evokes comparisons to Amare Stoudemire and Hakeem Olajuwon. He averaged 28.7 points per game as a high school junior and then chose an unprecedented path, skipping his senior year to play pro basketball abroad while he awaits eligibility for the 2011 NBA Draft. Tyler, 18, withdrew an oral commitment to play at Louisville and signed a one-year, $140,000 contract with Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Basketball Super...
