In Christopher Nolan's 2008 film "The Dark Knight," actor Heath Ledger plays a nameless anarchist who commits multiple acts of murder and arson for the express purpose of sowing chaos in the world. The Ledger character is nicknamed the Joker, as he likes to wear clown makeup and green hair coloring while committing crimes. In a scary aesthetic decision, Nolan made Ledger's clown makeup look like it had been on the character's face for three or four days, leaving it smeared, cracked, and partially wiped off. Additionally, Ledger's face was emblazoned with a pair of scars that stretched outward across his cheeks from the corners of his mouth. His clown smile was literally carved into his face. Because the character is a liar, the audience never knows how he got the scars or why.

A young girl secretly hatches a large bird-like creature in Hatching, a deliciously twisted coming-of-age horror from Finnish director Hanna Bergholm. Anchored by a terrific performance by young newcomer Siiri Solalinna, it’s an impressive directorial debut that suggests Bergholm could be a serious genre talent to watch.
Hatching begins with 12 year old Tinja (Solalinna) stretching her body in preparation for an upcoming try-out for her school gymnastics team. The driving force behind her efforts is immediately clear, as her pushy, overbearing mother (Sophia Heikkilä) records her every move for her video blog, “Lovely Everyday Life”, in which she shows off her perfect home and family.

Hanna Bergholm, a Finnish filmmaker who makes her feature directing debut with the darkly funny and altogether disturbing “Hatching,” is the first to clarify: The egg wasn’t her idea, but what was inside it — and who actually hatches it — was.
“Hatching” follows Tjina (remarkable first-time actress Siiri Solalinna), a 12-year-old gymnast whose already complicated young life gets much weirder after she discovers an abandoned egg in the forest near her idyllic home. Feeling guilty — she’s fairly certain that its mother was offed by Tjina’s own maniacal mom — she takes the egg home. She cuddles it close. It grows. And grows some more, until Tjina hatches…a bird? a girl? both?
In Ilja Rautsi’s original screenplay, the protagonist was a teenage boy. “[Ilja] said that he has this idea that a boy hatches a doppelganger out of an egg, and I just thought that sentence was so interesting,...

The Finnish writer-director is a talent to watch.
Hanna Bergholm grew up thinking there were monsters under her bed. Now she has brought one of them to life in her debut feature Hatching, which has its world premiere at Sundance Midnight on January 22.
Wild Bunch has already sold the buzzy film to 40 territories including including IFC Midnight for the US.
Bergholm describes Hatching as “a dark fable for grown-ups” and “a horror drama” with a dash of body horror. “I’ve always been fascinated in telling stories about our fears. I’ve always been afraid of horror films but maybe...

IFC Midnight has acquired out of the Cannes Virtual Market the North American rights to “Hatching,” a body horror and psychological drama from Finnish director Hanna Bergholm, the distributor announced Monday.
“Hatching” is the debut film from Bergholm with a screenplay by Ilja Rautsi, and IFC Midnight will give the film its festival premiere in 2021.
The movie explores the themes of control and keeping up appearances, and it tells the story of 12-year-old gymnast Tinja who tries desperately to please her mother, a woman obsessed with presenting the image of a perfect family life to the world through her popular blog. Then, one night, Tinja finds a strange egg. She hides it, she keeps it warm. And when it hatches, what emerges is beyond belief.

Damian Martin and.Adam Johansen.
The founders of prosthetics and creature effects house Odd Studio, Adam Johansen and Damian Martin, have worked on everything from 'Farscape' to 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom'. They talk to Harry Windsor about their partnership.
How did you guys meet?
Adam: We meet in .98 on the first season of Farscape. Damian and myself were among the first Aussies to join Jim Henson's crew and the only ones to do all four seasons. It was a fantastic series to work on, with so much creature effects and prosthetic work, and an invaluable experience for all involved, making new aliens and creatures on a weekly basis for four years. We both ended up working on productions like Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones and Revenge of The Sith, the Matrix films and a few others in between Farscape seasons. We worked very well...

Paul Trefry with one of his creations.
CreatureNFX.s Paul Trefry studied graphic design at Randwick Tafe in 1984. After graduating the next year, he admits he had .no idea what to do..
During the course he had already demonstrated a knack for making things with his hands, a skill which won him his first gig.
.At the end of second year we were given particular projects to do during the course, and instead of drawing them I.d physically make things,. says Trefry.
.And then a guy in the year before me who had gotten a job at an advertising agency wanted a little diorama made and asked me to do it..
Upon graduation, Trefry travelled to the UK and spent time with the Jim Henson Company, shortly after the company had finished work on Labyrinth. .I thought yeah, this is the direction I want to go in..

If you read my lengthy exploratory piece examining my theories with regards to Ridley Scott's Prometheus you'll remember on the first page where I mention in the opening scene there originally were two Engineers seen, not just one. Well, instead of just the concept art from "Prometheus: The Art of the Film" as seen above, now courtesy of a Facebook page belonging to Connor O'Sullivan (via Prometheus Forum) we have the following image that shows what the Elder Engineer (played by Matthew Rook) actually looked like. Scott has already said there will be upwards of 28 minutes of deleted scenes on the Prometheus Blu-ray (pre-order it here) and Darwin Shaw, who plays one of the Engineers seen later in the film, commented on Twitter saying, "You'll have to wait for the Directors cut for the full opening scene!" Personally, I can't wait to see how the full scene plays out...

Those of you who saw The Graham Norton Show on March 11 will recall Liam Neeson arriving late after dashing from Shepperton Studios where he was filming for the Clash of the Titans sequel.
So it's not exactly a surprise that Warner Bros now tells us that production on the project is 'under way.'
An official announcement from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures does give us some new information though, revealing the full cast and story outline. Notably, the movie no longer appears to be called Wrath of the Titans, with the wording Clash of the Titans 2 instead used on the press statement.
Clash of the Titans 2 is directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) and features returning stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades and Liam Neeson as Zeus. Danny Huston also reprises his role as Poseidon, who was seen only briefly in the first film.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures has recently announced that production has officially started for for Clash of the Titans 2. Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson are all back to reprise their roles. We reported earlier that the sequel to Clash of the Titans would be Wrath of the Titans, but that new title is no where to be seen in this press release, so maybe they haven't settled on an official name yet.
I wish I could be more excited about this sequel, but the first film was so bad I honestly have no desire to watch this one. What do you think?
Here's the full synopsis for the film:
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

I'm so excited for this film! "Clash of the Titans" is one of my childhood touchstones and although there's a part of me that doesn't want it remade, I'm looking forward to seeing Director Louis Letterier's ("The Incredible Hulk") vision!

The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, who produced the drama We Are Marshall for Warner Bros. Okay, so another year and now it's the final show of the awards season. I don't know why but I'm not that enthuastic about the Oscars this year. Maybe it was last year's underwhelming show or maybe it's because The Dark Knight isn't nominated this year, probably both, but never-the-less the show is done and I want to put up the post of how the show went. Time for the ultimate post-oscar show breakdown...

Best Motion Picture Of The Year

Best Picture was a major disappointment. Less said about The Dark Knight - the better. For me, Milk is the most deserving of best picture this year. It's issues are more relevant and more original than all films on the list this year.
