In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we present the year’s biggest TV flops.
1. Everybody Dance Now
Rumoured to have cost in excess of $10m, Everybody Dance Now was the biggest flop of 2012. From host Sarah Murdoch’s stiff delivery to the flawed format, the show was a write off from episode one. Ten were keen to turn it around, shortening the episodes and rejigging the show’s structure, but not even Murdoch’s pleas on Twitter to get the public to give it another shot were enough to save this disaster.
2. Bikie Wars
From the producers of Underbelly, Bikie Wars should have delivered. Instead it gave us bad wigs, bad acting and was a poor man’s Sons of Anarchy.
3. I Will Survive
How could a talent show with the ultimate goal being to play the part of a drag queen in a stage show possibly be a ratings bomb?...

While most brands that create a bad ad will learn from their mistakes, there is one company where making crap commercials is on brand.
So notoriously terrible is the ‘creative’ work of Rivers department store, they have an online hate group in the I Hate Rivers Ads Facebook page which has over 150,000 fans.
But could so many haters be wrong? We think so. Here at Mumbrella House these ads are a guilty pleasure.
They gain cut-through using a death metal soundtrack vs the muzac of more vasoline-lensed ads.
They are the 15-second equivalent of so-bad-its-good films like Sharktopus or The English Patient. As the snobby art critic said of ‘The Kramer’ painting in Seinfeld: “He’s a loathsome offensive brute, yet I can’t look away!”

Network Ten Cancels ‘Everybody Dance Now’ Australia’s Network Ten has axed Everybody Dance Now, a reality dance show hosted by Sarah Murdoch, the wife of Ten chairman Lachlan Murdoch. The network pulled the plug on the show produced by FremantleMedia after airing just three episodes. I always thought that being a footballer must be one of the worst jobs in the world. Having thousands of people watching you up close and howling at your every error.
If I tried to cope with that in my day job, my spelling would be even worse than it is already.
But being a TV programmer must be worse.
There aren’t many gigs where millions of people judge your work every single day.
Every morning at 8.30am, the ratings come through – and we all find out if they are dunces or geniuses.
Right now, it’s the turn of Ten’s David Mott in the firing line. This year, he took a chance on several new pieces of Australian-made programming and so far most of them have not fired.
Which leaves the network struggling for audience share and facing dreadful headlines.
I’m part of that problem, by the way.

Ten’s dance competition show Everybody Dance Now has been cancelled after its last ditch reformat failed to bring in a bigger audience on Sunday.
No more episodes will air, with this Sunday’s episode dropped from the schedule.
This Sunday, the show rated just 385,000 down on the previous week’s.
The network has ruled out moving the FremantleMedia-made show to Ten’s digital channel Eleven. It was fronted by Sarah Murdoch and featured Kelly Rowland and Jason Derulo as team captains.
James Warburton, CEO of Ten, said in a statement: “As part of the renewal of Network Ten’s creative content, we are trying new formats and creating more programming options. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the Everybody Dance Now format right. Kelly, Jason and Sarah are fantastic presenters. Their professionalism and commitment to Everybody Dance Now was remarkable, and the many talented dancers on the show were amazing.

‘Everybody Dance Now’ Stumbles But Murdochs Keep Music Playing Everybody Dance Now, a new Australian series hosted by Lachlan Murdoch’s wife Sarah Murdoch and featuring American “dance masters” Kelly Rowland and Jason Derülo, has stumbled badly on Network Ten, whose chairman is … Lachlan Murdoch. The Sunday night premiere averaged just 598,000 viewers against Nine’s debuting Big Brother and local crime series Underbelly: Badness. The audience dropped to 304,000 for the second episode on Monday night. Ten insists it’s sticking with the show produced by FremantleMedia Australia, although it’s been cut back to one hour on Sunday nights from three hours over two nights. Ten has ripped up its TV schedule for next week in a last minute move to cope with the desperately poor ratings of its reality contest Everybody Dance Now.
Sunday’s episode of the Sarah Murdoch-fronted show has been cut from 90 minutes to an hour.
Monday’s episode of the FremantleMedia-produced show has been dropped altogether.
The last minute switch comes after the show rated a metro audience of just 598,00 for its first episode before falling to 304,000 and 324,000 – remarkably low numbers for a primetime network show.
The changes have reverberations through Ten’s schedule.
The premiere of Don’t Tell The Bride, fronted by Kate Richie, has been brought forward from Tuesday to Monday to fill the hole left by Everybody Dance Now.
The premiere of the new series of Can Of Worms hosted by Chrissie Swan remains at 8.30pm on Monday.

Ten’s first shot in the post-Olympic TV battle was something of a disappointment for the network with Everybody Dance Now’s two-hour opening rating only 598,000 according to overnight ratings from OzTam.
The Fremantle Media-produced show – featuring dancing duels – is presented by Sarah Murdoch, who is married to Ten’s chairman Lachlan Murdoch.
The show was up against the final night of The Olympics on Nine and Seven’s Once Upon A Time.
Preliminary ratings put the audience at 572,000 – this rose to 598,000 after being corrected for the exact time of airing.
The early evening Olympics session averaged 1.457m while the later session averaged 1.307m. Once Upon A Time rated 883,000.
It was also outrated by ABC1′s Grand Designs Revisited which had an average audience of 944,000.
The Olympics dominated throughout the weekend, attracting audiences of around 1.2m on Friday night and an early evening audience of nearly 1.4m on Saturday.

The team behind Bonds’ ambitious Birthday Project will share learnings and results from the marketing campaign in one of the opening sessions of Mumbrella360.
The idea of the campaign was to find an Australian with a different date of birth for every day of the company’s history since 1915. Every one of them would then receive a free T-shirt, individualised with their date of birth.

Megan Gale has denied rumours that she is taking over as the host of Australia's Next Top Model. The Australian supermodel was linked to the role after former presenter Sarah Murdoch announced that she is quitting the reality TV show, but has instead confirmed that she will be returning to front rival Foxtel show Project Runway. TV bosses behind Australia's Next Top Model have apologised to the show's host Sarah Murdoch after confessing a "human error" was to blame for her embarrassing wrong-winner announcement.
The blonde beauty, who appeared in hit sitcom Friends and 2001 movie Head Over Heels with Freddie Prinze, Jr., announced wannabe model Kelsey Martinovich as the winner during the show's finale last week (begs27Sep10).
But during Martinovich's acceptance speech, producers informed the host there had been a mistake and she was forced to interrupt and reveal the real winner was fellow finalist Amanda Ware, before making a cringing apology.
Now chiefs at the Aussie series' production company have said sorry themselves for giving the wrong information to Murdoch through her ear-piece - but deny reports the mishap was a publicity stunt.
Brian Walsh, director of TV at Foxtel network, says, "We have confirmed that the fault was a human communications error to the host Sarah Murdoch and that an assumption had been made by the producer which has now shown to be incorrect.
"Live television can be unpredictable and people can be forgiven for making a mistake.
"What isn't acceptable, though, is any suggestion that the host, Sarah Murdoch, was at fault or that this was a publicity stunt. Nothing could be further from the truth and we apologise to Sarah for any embarrassment it and the subsequent publicity has caused her."...

The Australia’s Next Top Model finale has made headlines today in the northern hemisphere – not because of the models themselves, but because of Sarah Murdoch, the host of the reality TV show, who announced that the winner was Kelsey Martinovich. Only problem was, the actual winner was Amanda Ware, the other finalist. The mistaken announcement happened on live television, with millions and millions of viewers watching. Here’s how it went down: Murdoch was given some information from one of the producers, via an earpiece she was wearing. She announced Martinovich as the winner, and then after a few moments of tearful celebration, Sarah Murdoch gasped, the entire audience fell silent, and suddenly she made the painful announcement that there had been a “miscommunication” between her and the producer feeding her the information about the winner. She had announced the wrong name. Yikes. The rest was about as awkward as you can imagine.

By now you've seen the suuuuper awkward video of a very embarrassed Sarah Murdoch informing the two finalists on 'Australia's Next Top Model' that she had announced the wrong name as the winner.
If you haven't, a quick rehash: After Kelsey Martinovich had already begun celebrating her win on the show's live finale, Murdoch started holding her earpiece and saying, "I'm so sorry, oh my god, I don't know what to say." Eventually she did speak -- to explain that the actual winner was the other finalist, Amanda Ware.
Now Murdoch has spoken out about what happened: It was a "miscommunication," according to the Telegraph. The audio in her earpiece cut out when it was time to announce the winner, so she said the name of the girl who was in the lead a few minutes before. "I had nothing. It didn't come at that moment...

The blonde beauty, who appeared in hit sitcom Friends and 2001 movie Head Over Heels with Freddie Prinze, Jr., concluded the talent series by congratulating Kelsey Martinovich on her victory.
But during Martinovich's acceptance speech, producers informed the host of her mistake and she was forced to interrupt and reveal the real winner.
Murdoch looked visibly upset as she apologised for the mishap and informed Amanda Ware she had come out on top.
Jamie Campbell, the show's director of publicity, says, "In the heat of the moment on live TV, with 2,000 people in the audience, Kelsey's name was read out. And it was just the wrong name."
Runner-up Martinovich, who was offered a cash prize and a holiday to New York as compensation, insists there are no hard feelings. She adds, "I just looked at Sarah and realised there'd been a big mistake and felt like I needed to give her a big hug or something."...

"Australia's Next Top Model" host Sarah Murdoch embarrassed herself and jeopardized the show's credibility when she announced the wrong winner in a live finale. Sarah announced in front of 2,000 audience gathering at Luna Park that Kelsey Martinovich was the winner before stripping her off the crown and said Amanda Ware is the right one.
Kelsey was already giving her family and friends a thank-you speech when Sarah suddenly looked like she was in the verge of tears. "I don't know what to say right now. I'm feeling a bit sick about this," Sarah said. "I'm so sorry. Oh my God, I don't know what to say. This is what happens when you have live TV folks, this is insane, insane, insane."
