Winners of the 2017 Whistler Film Festival were announced at the Awards Celebration this morning on the final day of the 17th annual Festival. Ian Lagarde’s first feature All You Can Eat Buddha and Jason and Carlos Sanchez’s A Worthy Companion tied for the $15,000 cash prize presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia and the $15,000 post-production prize sponsored by Encore Vancouver in the 14th edition of the coveted Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film. The jury states “each in their own way convey unique visions and creative storytelling the jury believes have made and will make powerful contributions to the world of cinema.”A Worthy Companion
A Worthy Companion takes a fresh and new perspective that explores the complexity and humanity within the predator, victim relationship. This film questions how we perpetuate manipulative power dynamics between adult and child through the inner struggle of our female protagonists.

If you by some chance are just dropping back into this series after a while (aka if the mention of that name doesn’t instantly invoke a burning rage), she was the young woman at Castle Leoch who had such a huge crush on Jamie, she nearly sent Claire to the stake for witchcraft.

Baby makes four! Paulina Gretzky and Dustin Johnson have officially welcomed their second son. The engaged model and professional golfer, who are already mom and dad to 2-year-old Tatum, became parents for the second time on Monday, according to Espn's Ian O'Connor. The proud parents have not revealed their son's name as of yet, but O'Connor tweeted a photo of the newborn on Monday. Per a report from TMZ, Johnson has since flown to Wisconsin to compete in the 2017 U.S. Open. Perhaps he can secure another victory just in time for his first Father's Day with two sons. The Deadwood movie is pretty much HBO’s version of Chinese Democracy. Fans of David Milch’s swear-laced western drama have been clamoring for a resolution to the series ever since it ended abruptly after its third season way back in 2006, and for years now producers and cast have kept this dream alive by teasing the idea of a feature film to wrap things up. But that’s all it’s really been, a tease. Seems like once a year there’s an obligatory update about how everyone’s still interested — cast, crew, creator and network — and a vague promise that any day now the ball will get rolling. Late last year we received the most promising news yet from series lead Ian MacShane, who reported that Milch was ready to write and the cast was prepping for returns to their roles. Great news...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who has been the best guest star on a scripted show?
Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com
Wayne Brady showing up in body armor and riding a horse on Syfy’s post-apocalyptic disaster disaster “Aftermath” needs to be mentioned somewhere in this critics’ roundup, so here it is. But I’ll point out two from intentional comedies that come to mind. Timothy Olyphant’s short run on “The Grinder” as himself was fantastic and if I didn’t mention this my coworker Kaitlin would kill me. But my pick goes to David Duchovny, also as himself, on “The Larry Sanders Show.” We’d largely known Duchovny for...

“It’s a scarily wide net right now” said Miller about the search for Trish’s rapist. She’s not wrong. This week’s episode was all about the depressingly high number of plausible suspects. Ian doesn’t have an alibi. Cath has reason to think it could have been Jim. We were left thinking it was Lucas. Then there’s Ed, Leo, the caterer, the band, the owner of Axehampton House and roughly fifty other men, all of whom have yet to be ruled out.
Ellie’s moment of apprehension about that hooded dog walker showed just how widely the suspicion spreads. The bleakness of the picture was summed up by Cath and Trish’s crumbling certainty about...

Yep, yet another fleet of giant alien spaceships has Earth surrounded, but Denis Villeneuve’s movie is not your garden variety invasion fantasy. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner have a limited time to figure out how to communcate with alien creatures whose intentions are a complete unknown. It’s a rare sci-fi thriller that succeeds on a personal and emotional level — while teaching us how to converse in coffee stain hieroglyphics.

Chicago – The Country Music industry has become as huge as any category of music entertainment. So Mark Roberts, the creator of the TV sitcom “Mike & Molly,” has fashioned a boisterous new play about the machinations of that genre of music industry, and gave it the plaintive title of “New Country.”
Play Rating: 4.5/5.0
“New Country” is making its Midwest premiere after a triumphant Off Broadway run in New York City. It involves a two-faced but wildly popular country singer on the eve of his wedding in Nashville. Roberts has combined the “cletus” element of the genre, through his self-portrayed character Uncle Jim, and the business side through a pair of duplicitous handlers. What follows is a focused and (at times) emotional statement on the industry of entertainment, especially regarding who wins and who is left behind. What Roberts never forgets is his funny bone, the play is freaking hilarious, and hits...

Growing up, I was a sucker for gimmicks. Blame my Mom. Every time a new M&M flavor (did you know they make Coconut and Cherry?) or Oreo remix hit the shelves, our house was the first on the block to sample it. I like to think it’s this upbringing that now influences my taste in horror films, like my adoration of holiday themes (Krampus! Gremlins!) and anthology collections. Or how about an entire horror anthology themed around major holidays, aptly titled – you guessed it – Holidays! It was going to take an act of Satan to keep me away from this one…
Let me start by confirming that yes, Holidays works. It’s an admitted mixed-bag of highs and lows (more highs), but that’s to be expected with eight *very* different segments. Some will love Kevin Smith’s Halloween whorishness, while others will start with their typical anti-Smith...

This past weekend was MoCCA Fest 2016, or for those of you unfamiliar, the Museum of Comic and Cartooning Art Festival. Since 2014 it has been put on by The Society of Illustrators. Once again it was held at a new venue, the Metropolitan West next to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museu. Highlighted guests included Sonny Liew (Doctor Fate, The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye) and Rebecca Sugar (Adventure Time, Steven Universe). As with the past few years, I attended both days.
I was fortunate enough to get into both Sonny Liew’s Spotlight discussion on Saturday and Rebecca Sugar’s on Sunday. Both of these discussions were eye opening not only in the words that were said, but in who was listening to them.
On Saturday, Sonny’s discussion was moderated by his Doctor Fate collaborator, Paul Levitz. And you know that it’s an important discussion when...

Sequart Organization is proud to announce the publication of A Long Time Ago: Exploring the Star Wars Cinematic Universe, an essay anthology edited by Star Wars Expanded Universe author Rich Handley and Joseph F. Berenato.
In 1977, the cinematic world was changed forever, thanks to a science-fantasy film about a farm boy, a princess, a wizard, a cyborg, two smugglers, and a pair of robots. Written and directed by George Lucas, Star Wars — in essence, The Wizard of Oz meets The Odyssey meets Lord of the Rings, but in space — was a visual and audio extravaganza like nothing anyone had seen before. And going to the movies would never be the same again. The movie ushered in two (soon to be three) film trilogies and numerous television shows, making the franchise one of the most successful of all time. Star Wars mesmerized audience-goers young and old with its state-of-the-art special effects and resonant soundtrack,...

You may remember a while back when True Detective season two was first announced, fans started campaigning for their dream castings to take over from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. Our favourite suggestion? Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart.
Sadly we had to make do with Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, but would Sir Ian ever consider season three? Well, when Digital Spy asked him, he in fact hadn't heard of the HBO anthology drama, but he could be tempted.
When we told him about the online picks, he said: "God bless you! Who knows. I would consider anything, I've got very Catholic tastes. I love pantomime, I've had some of my greatest fun playing the Dame. I love sitcom, I've enjoyed being in Vicious with Derek Jacobi. I adore Coronation Street and I loved being in it. I adore Shakespeare, ditto.
"I don't mind, any old thing really.

Dismaland Castle and Big Little Mermaid suffering from split-personality disorder. Dismaland: Banksy and more than 50 other artists create bemusement theme park Who gives a damn about the cheap thrills to be offered by the Star Wars-themed expansion of Disneyland when you can relish the thought-provoking wonders of Dismaland? The artist Banksy, whose 2010 documentary feature Exit Through the Gift Shop was nominated for an Academy Award, has come up with his latest revolutionary artwork: a theme park for the bemusement of the whole family! Or perhaps not quite the whole family. Banksy calls his 2.5-acre art show a “family theme park unsuitable for small children.” Another Dismaland plus. Its construction shrouded in secrecy, Dismaland opened today, Aug. 20, '15, on the sea front at Weston-super-Mare, in Somerset, southwest England. Kaitlyn Bristowe is the Bachelorette! She charmed her way into the hearts of the Bachelor Nation – and nearly the Bachelor himself, Chris Soules, on season 19 of The Bachelor. Now Kaitlyn has begun her own journey to love.
Enter Nick. Talk about uncomfortable. He just walked right into the lion's den, and I could feel the tension through the TV. It was actually pretty tough for me to watch because I really saw with my own eyes how much the guys cared. Joshua was so sweet when he questioned Nick calling me a "cool chick." He is such a good, ol' fashioned country boy.

As Jurassic World bites a hole in our multiplexes, we compares its events to John Sayles' Jurassic Park IV script from a decade ago...
Nb: the following contains spoilers for Jurassic World.
For Universal, the success of Jurassic World is the $500m pay-off to a story which began well over a decade ago. Work on a third Jurassic Park sequel originally began after the release of Joe Johnston’s coolly-received Jurassic Park III way back in 2001, yet the film languished in a pre-production quagmire as writer after writer seemingly struggled to crack the story.
William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom Of Heaven) was the first screenwriter to step up to the plate, announced at a time when Keira Knightley was reportedly in the running for a major role. Around that time, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough were also thought to be returning to their respective roles of Ian Malcom and John Hammond.

The currently shooting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel has added a three-time Oscar nominee to its cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Laura Linney will join April O'Neil and the Awesome Foursome when the movie hits next year, though her exact role is being kept under wraps. Aside from April, there aren't really that many major female (at least, human female!) characters in Tmnt canon so I can't even hazard a guess as to who she might be playing. What about you guys? Linney can currently be seen opposite Ian McKellan in Mr. Holmes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is directed by Dave Green (Earth to Echo) with a script from Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol). The movie also stars Megan Fox as April, Stephen Amell as Casey Jones, Tyler Perry as Baxter Stockman, Will Arnett as Vern Fenwick, Brian Tee as Shredder, and model...

Jamie acts like a right arse in this week’s Outlander — and that’s a good thing. Here’s why.
Aside from sending some rather mixed messages to Laoghaire, Claire’s husband has made all the right moves in the short time we’ve known him. He’s deftly navigated complex clan politics. He’s landed a smart, hot, capable wife. He’s even believed the most unbelievable of stories — that Claire is a time-traveling nurse from the 1940s — with a wry grin and a love-endures-all attitude. We’ve rarely seen him make a misstep; the guy is on point.

“Ride or die.” Those words only appear a few times in the franchise – most famously out of Vin Diesel’s gravelly baritone in Fast & Furious 6 – but they have become the personal motto for how this franchise has continued, grown, succeeded and become greater with each film. Today, Furious 7, the latest in the series will be released, and it’s a mark of achievement not only that they’ve made it to seven films, but that it only feels exciting for a seventh film about criminals racing cars to be released. The Fast and the Furious franchise is unlike any franchise out there right now, as it has evolved from perfectly adequate popcorn films about criminals racing cars to superb and exhilarating blockbuster action films. No other franchise can say that they only began to hit their creative stride with the fifth film. To understand how we arrived at this point though,...

On Friday (March 20) morning, I assembled a one-person appeals board and by a unanimous decision, I've decided that the TV Academy and its genre classification system is/are a Comedy, because darned if those clowns don't make me laugh, which is more than I can say for undisputed comedy "Nurse Jackie." For a few years, the TV Academy has had difficulties with Emmy classification, because nobody on the Emmy rules committee is capable of accepting that sometimes things that are dramatic can also offer comedic elements and sometimes things that are comedic can often have dramatic elements and sometimes things that have a running time of between 44 minutes and an hour can be comedies and, in occasional extremes, it's even been known for half-hour things to be dramatic. It's almost as if life itself is neither wholly dramatic or wholly comedic and sometimes tone is fungible. But don't expect for...
