Who among us has not marveled, at some point, at the fact that his heart knows how to keep beating without conscious direction? That her stomach turns plants into energy, her cells fend off illnesses she doesn't even know are threatening her? Kelly Noonan dives into that sense of awe in Heal, a doc embracing many alternative-medicine theories about fighting disease and injury. A nicely photographed film whose mix of feel-good imagery and sounds-good talk may not convince many skeptics in the crowd, it will doubtless be embraced by many who think the modern world is producing new ailments that...

The Descent arguably made being stuck underground scary again, with intelligent use of the darkness and just a hint of claustrophobia half of the job of scaring the audience was done before the creatures even made an appearance on screen. Beneath may not want to be compared to Neil Marshall’s movie, but as a fan I can’t help but compare the two.
Beneath may claim it is inspired by true events, but we know that this is a statement that is used as a marketing tool to get attention but means nothing when it comes to historical fact. In the movie we see a crew of coal miners trapped 600 feet below the ground.

On his last day of work, George Marsh (Jeff Fahey) brings his daughter Samantha (Kelly Noonan) to see his job. George’s job is as a career miner, finally retiring; and Samantha is an environmental lawyer who has never agreed with his job. But whatever kind of conflict you may hope to see between these two diverse family members never happens when the roof caves in on them in the depths of the mines and the horror begins. Other than having to survive the tragic collapse—a horrific enough thought on its own—they have to escape or combat a mysterious inhuman thing that is lurking in the mines as well. It’s a straight from the headlines premise mixed with that of 2005’s The Descent. But it does not handle the mysterious monster lurking in the mines nearly as well (read: horrifically, frighteningly) as The Descent did, and this...

We Now Begin Our Descent: Ketai’s Debut a Minor Effort
Arriving decently dressed but in poor taste is writer/producer Ben Ketai’s directorial debut, Beneath, sharing its bland title with Larry Fessenden’s most recent indie horror film. This genre exploitation effort, which may eventually make a great double bill with Patricia Riggen’s forthcoming reenactment of the plight of the 33 Chilean miners from the 2010 Copiapo mining accident, often feels like a cheap knockoff of Neil Marshall’s The Descent, though Ketai’s adherence to the poker faced formula of And Then There Were None should satisfy those appreciative of commitment to ambience, no matter how generic the end product.
Samantha (Kelly Noonan) is an environmental lawyer who returns to her home town to celebrate her father George’s (Jeff Fahey) last day on the job due to declining health. Recording the celebratory efforts by interviewing several co-workers,...

*there are some minor spoilers here. Director: Ben Ketai. Writers: Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano. Cast: Brent Briscoe, Kurt Caceres, Eric Etebari and Jeff Fahey. Ben Ketai's (30 Days of Night) second feature film as director is the horror title Beneath. This film was recently released on video-on-demand, through IFC Films. And, this is one horror film that viewers should take notice of. Dealing with trapped miners deep below ground, the writing team of Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano introduce a supernatural element, born of hell. Lots of thrills can be found in Beneath, with the lighting standing out as the film's strongest element. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of tension in this exciting, horror outing. The story primarily focuses on the character Samantha (Kelly Noonan). Sam is visiting her dad from New York and Sam's dad is close to retirement. As a fond gesture, Sam...

Beneath is a new underground (literally) thriller starring Jeff Fahey as George Marsh, a longtime coal miner who goes down for “one last mission” – and when it comes to movies, you know how those usually go.
Along for the descent into darkness is George’s daughter, Samantha, played by Kelly Noonan, and a slew of soon-to-be-slain coworkers.
Dread Central got the chance to chat with Fahey and the film’s director, Ben Ketai, recently, and the highlights are below.
The first thing I wanted to know was, where was the film shot? It looks like an actual location. Fahey told me that although it looks like a real cave, the entire thing was built on a set.
“We were above ground,” he said. “The other part we can act. Sometimes realism helps, but with this, we had so many things to help us get into that mindset.” Such as, working...

What is the point of prefacing your horror film with text stating that it’s based on a true story? Obviously it’s meant to add additional degrees of terror — this really happened and it could happen to you too! — but while a film like The Amityville Horror benefited from the claim because its veracity was difficult to confirm back in the pre-internet days of 1979 the truth behind today’s movies can be ascertained with a few clicks of a mouse. What I’m saying is please stop opening your horror films with onscreen text pretending any of what we’re about to see is true. It’s dumb, and it more often than not shows a desperation on the part of filmmakers who lack confidence in the quality and power of their actual film. Of course, if you absolutely insist on doing it anyway it helps to follow it up with a strong enough movie that...

"I want you to take a deep breath..." Scared of being stuck in a cave? Are you claustrophobic? This isn't the trailer for you. IFC Films has debuted a trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, not to be confused with the other Beneath horror directed by Larry Fessenden. This one is about coal miners who end up trapped after a mine collapse, and one of them is a very pretty coal miner's daughter (go figure), played by Kelly Noonan. The cast includes Jeff Fahey, Eric Etebari, Kurt Caceres, Brent Briscoe. While the synopses seem to hint there's a The Descent like creepiness in the cave, this actually just seems like a solid psychological thriller. Here's the first official trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, direct from IFC (via SlashFilm): Synopsis for Beneath from IMDb: A crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. As...

Two films we've been talking about for a long while, Witching and Bitching and Beneath, will be getting released this June courtesy of IFC Midnight. Read on for details and more.
IFC Midnight announced a June 13 VOD release for Alex de la Iglesia’s horror comedy Witching & Bitching. Witching's ensemble cast boasts some of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, such as Mario Casas (I Want You), Hugo Silva (Sex, Parties and Lies), and Carmen Maura, who earned a Best Actress award at San Sebastian in 2000 for her role in Commonwealth. Further cast members are Terele Pavez, Carolina Bang, Secun de la Rosa, Pepon Nieto, and Jaime Ordonez.
The flick centers on a band of thieves trying to flee to France after purloining 25,000 gold rings from a Spanish city. A curse is placed on them, and they fall into the clutches of the witches of the Navarrese town of Zugarramurdi.

Chicago – “10 Years” unintentionally backfires by proving that a real-life Hollywood couple – Channing Tatum and his actual spouse of three years Jenna Dewan-Tatum – has less on-screen chemistry than two actors who’ve practically never met.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Attempting to capitalize on everything we loved, hated and have certainly never forgotten about high school, “10 Years” is a somewhat effective blast to the past that mixes the seemingly authentic moments of various intersecting characters with forced attempts at overly obvious Hollywood screenwriting.
Exploiting nostalgia as its primary sales tool and Channing Tatum as its linchpin casting credit, I watched the progression of some of the characters and their stories indifferently. For others, my life would have been improved without them and the film would have benefited by cutting the bloat they added to the project.

Director: Bears Fonte. Review: Adam Wing. On the surface, Carrie (Sara Fletcher) is a small-town girl looking to break into acting, but underneath her fresh-faced appearance is a girl on a mission. After learning that a journalist is about to go public with an old sex tape made by her cousin Stefy (Kelly Noonan) - a moderately successful pinup girl - Carrie makes a deal to provide the journalist with an even bigger story. Jordan Rivers (Leah McKendrick) is a teen starlet and Internet sensation, there’s also a chance she might be a fraud. Carrie must venture into Hollywood’s seedy underbelly to expose Jordan, but in doing so, and by delving deeper into the lies, deception and betrayal, she makes herself a prime candidate for ‘the latest Hollywood murder victim’. Which I’m guessing isn’t the kind of name she wants to make for herself. Bears Fonte directs this low budget thriller,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Breaking Glass Pictures.
Director/writer: Bears Fonte.
iCrime is a film about murder, extortion and looking out for family. This title will release on DVD September 27th through Breaking Glass Pictures and this is a film that you might want to avoid. In fairness to director Bears Fonte this is his first film. Fonte is not afraid to experiment with directing techniques including split screens, multiple point-of-view, and hand-held cameras. However, the script from which Fonte is working from is quite shallow and lacking focus. Plot developments range from: the shooting of an online film, Carrie trying to protect her cousin's reputation, a fake abduction of an internet star, false romance, selling secrets to an entertainment reporter and the list goes on and on and on. In order to bring some focus to this review, two questions will be looked...

How about a murder-mystery horror film filled with plot twists, action ... oh, and a boatload of hotties running around. Well, sailor, iCrime is just the film you've been looking for.
Vicious Circle Films' iCrime, starring Sarah Fletcher, Kelly Noonan and Travis Brorsen, is like a grown-up version of "iCarly," that is if Carly was being blackmailed with an old sex tape and was forced to venture into Hollywood's seedy underbelly to save herself. On second thought, not really like "iCarly" at all. Way better.
Director Bears Fonté's film will be released on DVD on September 27 and will contain deleted scenes amongst the bonus features.
