The news of Hou Hsiao-hsien's retirement from filmmaking due to his battle with dementia shocked the cinema world, which seems to have lost one of its definite auteurs. As a small tribute to his timeless work we present a list of all his movies, with the exception of the two omnibuses he participated in 2007 (To Each His Own Cinema) and 2011 (10+10) which we hope to review later on, along with his yet unfinished last movie, “Shulan River”. Without further ado, here is a rundown of his movies, in chronological order.
1. Cute Girl (1980)
You should not ignore the importance of “Cute Girl” when it comes to introducing audiences to the kind of approach, thematically and aesthetically, that Hou would develop further in his next projects. As author Philip Kemp rightfully points out in his essay on the filmmaker's early works, concepts such as the contrast between rural and urban Taiwan or traditional family values,...

Taiwanese actor and director Doze Niu may be able to look back on a career spanning over four decades, but his legacy is ultimately tainted given the charges of sexual assault for which he was sentenced to four years in jail. This is especially tragic as his directorial efforts such as “What on Earth Have I Done Wrong?!” and “Monga” had opened a new chapter for Niu, winning awards at international festivals and known by audiences in many countries. “Monga” may just be one of his best works which was selected at the Taiwanese Entry for Best Foreign Language Films at the Oscars 2010, but which also highlights his prowess in visual storytelling and blending drama with action.

Although it is not his first feature as director, Hou Hsiao-hsien has gone on record claiming that his 1983 work “The Boys from Fengkuei” is his first movie. There are a number of reasons for his statement, the first, and perhaps the most important, being his collaboration with writer Chu Tien-wen, who would go on writing the scripts for the majority of his future features, thus becoming an important influence for the director’s works. This change can be seen from the very first moments of “The Boys from Fengkuei”, which, despite again telling a story about growing up and initiation, looks and feels more like an aesthetic and narrative foundation for his other works. Additionally, Hou was beginning to be noticed by critics and film festivals outside his home country, with the feature receiving four nominations at the Golden Horse Awards along with a Golden Montgolfiere Award at Nantes Three...

No cinema movement in the world has, to this day, captured the ups and downs of growing up as perfectly as Taiwanese New Wave. The 1983 movie titled “Growing Up”, Hou Hsiao-Hsien‘s frequent collaborator Chen Kun-Hou’s adaptation of T’ien-Wen’s novel, co-written by Hou himself, is a film that busies itself with the uneven journey to adulthood. Highly acclaimed in Taiwan, the movie is considered one of the first to bring international attention to the budding movement created by the young new-generation filmmakers from the nation.
“Growing Up” is streaming on Mubi
A child observes his mother, previously a bar singer, get married to a much older man, Mr. Bi, and has to unwillingly adopt his name. From then on, Little Bi endures the road to adulthood, his road being especially thorny due to his remarkable penchant for getting in trouble, a tendency which becomes a bane as he becomes a teenager.

The alleged incident occurred in November last year, during the shooting of Niu’s current film project “Pao Ma.” Following evenings drinks at his home with crew, Niu is alleged to have forced himself on a female crew member. She reported the incident to police the next day.
When the allegations became public knowledge in December, Niu denied assault. He said that the liaison had been consensual, and that the two had been in a romantic relationship. Niu was set free on bail, but not allowed to leave Taiwan. He has made no public comment since the formal charges.

The 19th Busan International Film Festival (Biff) opened with a star-studded red carpet and a conciliatory anti-war undercurrent to proceedings, which included the world premiere of Doze Niu Chen-Zer’s Paradise In Service.
Set in the late 1960s, the coming-of-age film looks through a young Taiwanese army recruit’s eyes at people dispersed and marked by two wars – one with the Japanese following their occupation of much of Asia and one with mainland China’s Communists in a conflict that was continuing into the Cold War.
Played by Ethan Juan, the recruit starts out in an elite squad of frogmen, but is kicked out to work in Unit 831 or “Paradise in Service”, a military brothel teeming with drama.
Director Niu and his film’s stars were on the red carpet with prominent guests including: New Currents jury head Asgar Farhadi; this year’s Asian Film Academy dean Bela Tarr; veteran director Im Kwon-taek with his Revivre stars Kim...

Paradise in Service is presented by Taiwanese film-maker Hou Hsiao-Hsien but it is certainly not directed by him. This classical melodrama is a much more accessible film, and although conventional, communist-war period in Taiwan is brought to vivid life thanks to the equally colourful characters and light melancholic tone.Director Doze Chen-Zer Niu presents a rather different slice of Taiwan's history. In 1969, Kinmen, the nationalist party, is still in conflict with the mainland of China. With heavy hearts, most troops feel they will never see their homes again, literally fighting coast to coast. New recruit Pao is one such young and scared man who has a girl back home. He made a promise to her that he intends to keep. He is transferred to an...

Monga director Doze Niu's new film Love is like a very sweet dessert. It has been made with both natural sugars (the charming cast and stories) and artificial sweeteners (certain plots and dialogues). While it may be too sweet for some viewers, those who like plenty of sweetness will find this a heavenly treat. Just how much you enjoy the film will really depend on how much you are in the mood for love. The film cannot be more appropriately titled, as it is all about love. There is romantic love, parents' love towards children and love between siblings. Plus the characters discuss about love (perhaps a little too much at times), and there is even a scene that features a shopping bag with...

When she meets Lee, a similarly introverted soul, Mei feels she has met her soulmate - and the couple plan their escape.Starring Xu Jiao (CJ7, Mulan) as Mei, Rene Liu and Harlem Yu as her parents and boasting an appearance by Kwai Lun Mei (possibly as an older version of Mei), Starry Starry Night already looks to be a promising sophomore feature. The teaser trailer confirms that Lin has clearly learnt from his experiences as first assistant director on films such as Tsai Ming Liang's The Wayward Cloud and Doze Niu's...

While I do not think that something as edgy or unusual as Giorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth (pictured above) will make the 'final five' short list, but kudos to Greece for throwing it out there. Perhaps something like Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions will make the cut despite its similarly unsettling subject matter. Either way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did put out a big release yesterday with all of their Foreign Language film submissions, 65 of them in total even Greenland, from various countries. Many of these films have reviews in our archives.

I have been keeping track of all of the Foreign Language Oscar submissions in my "The Contenders" section of the site and today the official list of sixty-five films from sixty-five countries was unveiled by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 83rd Academy Awards. On January 20, 2011 a shortlist of nine contenders will be announced prior to the naming of the nominees on January 25, 2011.
I have included the complete list directly below, which includes first-time entrants Ethiopia and Greenland. The only film that was originally thought to be under consideration, but didn't show up on the Academy's final list was Afghanistan's entry, Black Tulip, directed by Sonia Nassery Cole. IMDb doesn't list a release date for the film, which means it may not have met the release requirements in time.
I have linked each film to their corresponding IMDb page for those films not included...

I'm not sure what the cutoff date is for from the individual countries for the Foreign Language Film nominations, but Sony Pictures Classics are glad to see Canada select Denis Villeneuve's Incendies. The company now has three horses in the race and once again, places the distributor in a pretty good position to grab the most of the spots in the final five nominations. Their solid trio so far includes: the Villeneuve film that played at Venice, Telluride and Tiff with Cannes items Xavier Beauvois' Of Gods and Men and Olivier Schmitz's Life, Above All. Having seen all three mentioned titles, I can say that this will please Academy voters. Cross your fingers for Dogtooth folks. If I had the holiday time left, I’d be booking a trip to España right about now. The 43rd annual Sitges kicks off on October 7th and their line up so far is impressive. Damned impressive.
In competition are Gregg Araki’s Kaboom (teaser, stills), Christopher Smith’s Black Death (review), Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports (trailer), Quentin Dupieux’s Rubber (clip) and Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins among many others. In competition in the Panorama section are another great set of films including Shion Sono’s Cold Fish (trailer), Takeshi Kitano’s Outrage (trailer), Jim Mickle’s Stake Land (trailer) and Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film (review).
If those titles aren’t enough, there’s loads more including Rob Stefaniuk’s vampire musical road trip film Suck (review, trailer), James Wan’s Insidious (clip), Adam Green’s Frozen (trailer), Black Lightning (trailer), Super (clip), The Vanishing on 7th...

Gangsters and street violence are the name of the game in a new full length trailer for Taiwanese thriller Monga, helmed by actor turned director Doze Niu. Even before its opening the film has already courted some online controversy, as some local officials objected to an early teaser trailers negative portrayal of Taipei's ancient district of “Monga,” complaining it mainly featured gangster fights and brothel scenes. Does makes you wonder just exactly what they were expecting in a movie about Triad gangs?? No doubt adding a great boost to tickets sales Taiwanese pop idol Ethan Ruan leads the cast in the story of five teenagers who get dragged into gang rivalries, following the end of Taiwan’s military dictatorship in the 1980s.
