The Mean Machine is getting back on the field… again. Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures are developing another remake of The Longest Yard.
The 1974 original was a prison sports comedy starring Burt Reynolds as Paul “Wrecking” Crewe, a former NFL star who is sentenced to 18 months in Citrus State Prison, where he recruits a group of prisoners to play football against the guards. The film included a number of real-life football stars, including Ray Nitschke of the Green Bay Packers. The 2005 remake amped up the comedy and starred Adam Sandler in the role of the wash-up quarterback, who agrees to assemble a prison team in exchange for a reduced sentence. Burt Reynolds appeared in the remake as the team’s coach.

Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard (1974) will be screening at The Wildey Theater in Edwardsville, Il at 7pm Tuesday, January 28th. Admission is $2.
Hollywood veteran director Robert Aldrich gave Burt Reynolds one of his biggest hits – and best roles – in this seriocomic tale of prison life and football. On the surface, the character of Paul Crewe is fairly despicable – he is a smartass, a drunk, and a violent malcontent not above mistreating women. But Reynolds not only makes us like Crewe, he makes us actually root for him to find redemption. With Eddie Albert and Ed Lauter as the villains, and wonderful character performances from Richard Kiel, Michael Conrad, Bernadette Peters, and many others, Yard doesn’t gloss over its portrayal of prison society. The hard life often explodes in violence, racial tensions abound, and then there’s the warden’s secretary.

Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of the Monkees will be on hand for a Q&A session at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Nov. 1 when an American Cinematheque screening of the band’s 1968 feature “Head” commemorates the 50th anniversary of the film’s release.
The Pre-Fab Four’s big-screen debut was a self-referential and surrealistic picture starring the band – Nesmith, Dolenz, Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones – and featuring an eclectic cast that included Frank Zappa, Annette Funicello, Victor Mature, pro football linebacker Ray Nitschke, prizefighter Sonny Liston and topless dancer Carol Doda. Co-written by Bob Rafelson (who also co-produced the film with Bert Schneider) and Jack Nicholson, it marked Rafelson’s feature directing debut.
Shot following the cancellation of the Monkees’ popular TV show, the movie, which premiered in New York on Nov. 6, 1968 — and in Hollywood two weeks later — sported a soundtrack that included songs by Harry Nilsson...

Burt is gone, but his movies live on! This weekend, the Skyview Drive-In in downtown Belleville, Il, will pay tribute to the late superstar Burt Reynolds with a double feature of two of his best films!
At 8pm is Smokey And The Bandit
Ever wonder what the second highest grossing film of 1977 was, after Star Wars?Redneck bad boys were all the rage in ’77. Cars were still made in Michigan and Cb radios were the hot technology with phrases like “10-4 good buddy” familiar expressions and Smokey And The Bandit captured that side of American culture as well as any film. The plot of Smokey And The Bandit was merely an excuse for the many car chases and gags that comprised the thin story, which is about Bandit (Burt Reynolds) and his buddy Cledus (aka: “Snowman”. – Jerry Reed) attempting to win a bet. They have to drive from Georgia to Arkansas,...

Burt Reynolds, one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite actors, turns 80 today. Happy Birthday Burt!
On February 11th, 1936, Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, before his family moved to Jupiter Florida, where his father served as Chief of Police. Young Burt excelled at sports and played football at Florida State University. He became an All Star Southern Conference halfback (and was earmarked by the Baltimore Colts) before injuries sidelined his football career. He dropped out of college and headed to New York with dreams of becoming an actor. There he worked in restaurants and clubs while pulling the odd TV job or theater role. Burt was spotted in a New York City stage production of Mister Roberts and signed to a TV contract and eventually had recurring roles in such shows as Gunsmoke (1955), Riverboat (1959) and his own series, Hawk...

Randy calls an audible and goes for a little Burt Reynolds.
It’s not too hard to connect the dots between professional football and prison, or between football and fine wine. It’s quite a bit harder to make a play for all three.
There is no shortage of star football players who have done a little time – or more – in the pokey. Conversely, some football folks have ventured into the field of wine. I’ll take football over prison and wine over either of those choices.
The Longest Yard has Burt Reynolds – himself a former college football player – as a prisoner who heads up the inmate football team in a contest against the guards, a game which is more than just a game to those on the field. It’s fantasy football with real consequences. These football heroes have numbers a lot longer than one or two digits; their football cards are mugshots.

Since The Week in Sports began as a feature on AfterElton.com we've kept our queer eye on the photo wires to bring you a weekly compilation of the most arresting images of male athleticisim from around the world.
2009 is coming to a close, so in this final installment we thought we'd look back and gather together the best of the best. Hence The Year in Sports. (Well, technicaly the half-year in sports, since we only started this feature in July.)
Now we know not every football fan is also a tennis fan, and some rugby fanatics cannot abide men's gymnastics. So this time out we've helpfully sorted the photos by category. You can jump to whatever photo collection you want by the table of contents below. Oh, and in addition to the major sports, we've got a few special photo categories that we hope you'll enjoy!

We thought we'd try something different around here by turning our discerning queer eye towards the sports world, so in last Thursday's The Week in Sports we sifted through hundreds of wire photos looking for the most arresting images of male athleticism produced that week from around the world.
We thought it would probably be a one-off, our own gay Sports Illustrated special edition, but you guys clearly like your male athletes (both obscure and famous) and asked for more. You even suggested some of your favorite sports stars and requested photos of them.
We really did look for the names (and teams) you mentioned, but the caveat is photos have to come from the past week in order to appear in this feature, thus we couldn't go back and, say, get a hot photo of Gabe Kapler or Ryan Braun from last year. Much as we'd like to — those guys are smokin'!
