Lorde made the crowd feel anything but blue during her performance on the first night of the Life is Beautiful Music and Art Festival in Las Vegas on Sept. 22, performing her hits like “Green Light” and “Royals.” The night was closed out by blink-182 and Chance the Rapper.

Following his Saturday afternoon set at Marquee Dayclub in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, DJ Khaled was briefly joined by Kesha at a private dining room at Tao Asian Bistro in the Venetian on Sept. 23. The “Praying” singer, who was in town to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, congratulated Khaled on his festival performance before heading to her own table in the restaurant’s loft, where she enjoyed the chicken fried rice, lobster wontons and short ribs. My advance reading copy of Shivers VII didn’t include an introduction, and the table of contents gave no indication there would be one added to the finished and published edition. I’ve gotten used to anthologies leading off with some sort of mission statement or manifesto (sometimes, these missives are better than the stories that follow), but I guess hitting the seventh entry in a series indicates you know what you’re doing, and readers should know what to expect. After plowing through the 26 stories in Shivers VII, I’d say agree that no introduction is necessary. Like the six volumes before it, this is an anthology of rare quality, a collection of contemporary fiction that provides an excellent snapshot of where the genre stands today, and a roadmap to where it’s going. However, it’s important to remember where the genre came from even as it continues to move forward,...

Recently, Cemetery Dance Managing Editor Brian James Freeman talked to Joe Konrath, Dean Wesley Smith, Blake Crouch, Scott Nicholson, and David Gaughran about their success publishing their short stories as eBooks. Brian James Freeman: Why did you decide to try selling shorter works as eBooks? Joe Konrath: The more work you have for sale, the more virtual shelf space you take up, the easier it is for readers to find you. Much of my short work links to my longer work, and it is less expensive. Like a gateway drug. Dean Wesley Smith: I have written and sold so many hundreds of short stories, when eBooks opened up to indie publishers, it seemed like a logical place to start. A good place to practice, actually....

Women are more prolific networkers in male-dominated industries. Is social media correcting the real-life old-boys' club?
Women are the best networkers in the tobacco and ranching industries; men rule cosmetics, according to LinkedIn's new study of the 21st century workforce, Battle of the Sexes, in which the social network tapped its massive trove of user data to examine gender imbalances between industries. A logical conclusion from the results that seem contrary to common sense is that women in male-dominated industries (and vice versa) seek refuge through social media.
According to LinkedIn's data scientist, Scott Nicholson, the "top U.S. industries where women are savvier online professional networkers than men" are:
Alternative dispute resolutionTobaccoAlternative medicineRanchingInternational trade and development
Nicholson says the "savviness" measure accounts for the fact that more men are on LinkedIn and also have more connections in general. A perfectly balanced industry would be one where men and women...

It's that time of year again when the weather is horrifically hot and the sun is just too damn bright for us horror fans. Time to curl up with a good book in the darkness of your home and crank up the AC. With that in mind, here is a hopefully helpful list of "Summer Reading to Chill Your Bones".
This is definitely not a complete catalogue, and I would love to hear from folks who have their own recommendations so please feel free to add your comments below.
And away we go...
1) The Passage by Justin Cronin. This is turning into The book to read this summer, and for good reason. It is one part Stephen King's The Stand combined with Robert McCammon's Swan Song and a soupcon of Cormac McCarthy's The Road. The first part of a trilogy with the movie rights already purchased by Ridley Scott,...

Stoker-nominated horror author Scott Nicholson has re-released his first novel The Red Church as an e-book for various reader platforms through Amazon.com and other digital outlets.
The novel includes three bonus essays and a new cover. The Red Church was originally published in 2002 by Kensington Books and was a Stoker Award finalist for First Novel and an alternate selection of The Mystery Guild. "The book did well, but there are still more than 6 billion people who haven't read it," Nicholson said. "The publishing industry can be frustrating, especially when your work is no longer available. This is an experiment to see if it's worthwhile to publish independently and see if I can compete with my own New York titles."
The story involves a 13-year-old boy, Ronnie Day, who struggles with his faith when his mother joins a haunted Appalachian Church and a mysterious preacher returns to town. "Maybe this...

There’s more than one reason to plant corn. Just ask Scott Nicholson, who grows his own gardens every year. Besides providing good table fare, the process of cultivating the land helps reinvigorate the senses.
Like a garden’s variety, Nicholson is a versatile writer. Short stories, novels, comic books, screenplays – you name it and he has probably written it.
That’s what happens when you’re talented, and Nicholson is one of the most talented writers who’ve come on the scene in recent years. His tales of supernatural terror have swooned readers into fits of gooseflesh, leaving them craving for more. His first book was a collection of short stories; his second, an atmospheric novel about small-town evil whose antagonist was nothing more than a creepy church.
Well, that’s not exactly true. There was a lot more to The Red Church, the title of the book, than a worship hall.

Fans of Scott Nicholson's book The Home (review here) have a big reason to smile today as the 2005 novel has been optioned by producer Lea Marin, with Sean Frewer attached to direct.
The Home tells the tale of Freeman Mills, a twelve-year-old boy with a rough past. A psychopathic father and a torturous childhood have landed him in group home after group home, filled with well-meaning do-gooders who want to help or "heal" him. Wendover Home is no different, he believes. The other children are troubled and unwanted, and the staff is a mixture of religious zealots and pure scientific fanatics. But there is more to Wendover than just the high stone walls and the pale blue of the boys' dormitory. Strange experiments are being performed that threaten to bring Wendover's past back to chilling light.

Scott Nicholson, author of the novel "The Home," informed us the rights for that novel have been optioned by producer Lea Marin. Sean Frewer is on board to direct. Marin has an extensive background in documentaries, producing Twelve , Examined Life and the Discovery Channel series Mega Builders . If The Home comes to fruition, it would mark Frewer's feature debut. In the novel, experimental treatments on troubled children bring back the spirits of the home's former occupants. "The Home" was published in 2005.
