Awards season is underway, and the Gotham nominations are only a small blip for what could be on Oscar voters radar.
While any nomination (or win) from any industry group marks a chance at gaining momentum, it’s important to remember the Oscar punditry golden rule: It’s not about what everyone wants to win, it’s about what will win. And critics are not Oscar voters. Each Gothams category is determined by a set of five distinct critics and journalists from various disciplines.
The slate of feature film nominees, with Sean Baker’s hilarious and moving dramedy “Anora” leading the charge with four nods, is yet another compelling reason to think that the Neon-distributed Palme d’Or winner has what it takes to go all the way in the race. On the other hand, I wouldn’t read too much into the complete shutout of films such as...

This article contains spoilers for "Agatha All Along" season 1 episode 1, "Seekest Thou the Road."
You might be a little confused when you press play on the first episode of Kathryn Hahn's new "WandaVision" spin-off "Agatha All Along." Why? It's not witchy, there are no supernatural elements at first, and Hahn's character is a gritty detective ... who looks and feels quite a bit like Kate Winslet's title character on the HBO series "Mare of Easttown."
Allow me to explain. The first twenty or so minutes of "Agatha All Along" envision Hahn as grizzled cop Agnes O'Connor, who has to solve yet another murder after a girl's body is found in a creek. She's interrupted by FBI Agent Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), who's there to help despite Agnes' protestations, and everything heats up considerably when a young teenager (Joe Locke) breaks into her house in the dead of night. So what's going on here?...

Coming-of-age stories are not a new phenomenon in Cinema. In a generation where ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ are the cornerstones of growing up, the stories of characters becoming the person they are meant to be can sometimes be lost in the noise of the classics. However, a new coming-of-age story is rising to the occasion. ‘Janet Planet’ is the film debut of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Annie Baker, and the coming-of-age story is one not to be missed. Casting director Avy Kaufman admits even she was skeptical when Steven Zaillian asked her to come on board to cast “Ripley,” the Netflix limited series based on Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The story had already been adapted to screen, most notably in Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-nominated 1999 film.
“At first, I was wondering why Steve was doing this,” Kaufman says bluntly. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with him on many other projects, so I know how talented he is, but to reboot is really risky.” But the final product, which boasts 13 Emmy nominations, including a nod for casting, quelled any doubts. “It’s like a piece of art,” Kaufman raves. “I was really impressed. It tells so many different stories and gets inside the characters. I just think it’s a masterpiece.”

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are eyeing a new feature from filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
A24 is set to finance and produce writer-director Borgli’s movie The Drama, which hails from Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen’s production company Square Peg. The stars are in early talks for the lead roles in the film from Borgli, who previously wrote and directed A24’s 2023 feature Dream Scenario that starred Nicolas Cage.
Plot details have not been shared, but The Drama is said to involve a couple whose romance changes dramatically before their big day. Aster, Knudsen and Tyler Campellone serve as producers for Square Peg.

We’ll be arguing about whether “Challengers” is an Academy Awards contender up until the nominations are announced in January. Is Zendaya a lock for a Best Actress nomination? If Josh O’Connor and/or Mike Faist get nominated, will they be in lead or supporting? Is this even an Oscars movie? The most likely nominee is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Best Original Score. They’ve won two times before (for “The Social Network” and “Soul”), and their pounding, attention-grabbing electronic score is one of the film’s most distinctive elements.
Luca Guadagnino’s sexy, memeworthy tennis drama was one of the most talked-about movies of the spring. It’s about the romantic complications of tennis pros Tashi (Zendaya), Art (Faist), and Patrick (O’Connor), who are all in love with each other and all kind of hate each other. It’s the most fun adult drama of the year.

Julianne Nicholson and newcomer Zoe Ziegler are a dream team in the Pulitzer prize-winning US playwright’s richly cinematic film debut
Janet (Julianne Nicholson) is the whole world for her only child, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler). Bespectacled, gauche and still partially unformed as a human, Lacy is fascinated by her casually magnetic mother, examining her hungrily and attempting to read her as if she’s a map to navigate the mysteries of the adult world. It’s an intense relationship, poised on the brink of change, with Lacy’s adolescence lurking just around the corner.
But it’s this sense of precious transience that makes Janet Planet, the feature debut of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker, such an exquisite and treasurable account of a complicated mother-daughter bond. It’s a moment caught in the amber light of an endless summer in rural western Massachusetts. And if by the film’s...

The latest film from buzzy US studio A24 delves into the complexity of a shifting mother-daughter relationship. Much like last year's award-winning Past Lives (also an A24 release), from playwright-turned-director Celine Song, Janet Planet marks Pulitzer Prize-winning Annie Baker’s first steps from stage to screen. A coming-of-age story about a mother (Julianne Nicholson) and daughter Lacy (Zoe Ziegler), the film loosely unfolds throughout four chapters, delineated by distinct title cards, as boyfriend Wayne (Will Patton), old friend Regina (Sophie Okonedo) and theatre troupe leader Avi (Elias Koteas) drift in and out of Janet’s orbit. These interactions are predominantly viewed via the unique perspective of misfit Lacy, an imaginative and observant child who spends her summer vying for her mother’s attention, while adrift and struggling to find her own trajectory in life.

Julianne Nicholson stars in playwright Annie Baker’s languidly charming and tasteful debut feature about a girl’s increasingly fraught holiday at home
The dramatist Annie Baker won a Pulitzer for her stage play The Flick, about listless, bored ushers in an empty cinema auditorium between screenings; now she makes her feature debut, writing and directing a very personal movie about an 11-year-old girl spending a fraught summer with her mum in her rural Massachusetts home in the summer of 1991. The film has sympathy and charm, although I can’t exactly share all the praise that’s been lavished on it. It unfolds in an indulgent, dreamy summer haze, halfway between rapture and torpor; a murmuring indie-stonewash of good taste.
The performances are strong, but the writing is such that the characters’ passions, fears and grievances are in some way veiled; yet there is subtlety and indirectness in this. Julianne...

George Miller’s high-octane prequel film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” doesn’t have a ton in common with “Janet Planet,” the quiet, small-scale indie darling from playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker. The films were only released a month apart, so any real influence is pretty unlikely. But according to Baker, she can still see a connection.
Speaking in a recent interview with Letterboxd, Baker was asked what fascinates her about mother/daughter stories. She denied that “Janet Planet” was influenced by any one story in particular. But she did just see “Furiosa,” which centers on a daughter losing her mother and trying to find her way back home, and Baker felt it definitely made an impression.

I’m on a Zoom call with Julianne Nicholson, discussing her latest film “Janet Planet,” when I reference a moment that made the audience at my screening collectively gush with joy and nostalgia. The central figure of playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker’s directorial debut is an isolated pre-teen named Lacy. She comes of age during the early 1990s in a lush, wooded, mountainous region of Massachusetts — a time and place where long bouts of silence and observation were how you came to understand the world around you — and orbits the life of her mother, the eponymous Janet, played by Nicholson, with equal fascination and disdain.
The scene I mentioned to Nicholson takes place a little later in the film and sees Lacy playing by herself, with a Little Red Riding Hood doll that, when turned inside out, becomes Little Red’s Grandma, then turned again, becomes The Wolf who eats them both.

In Janet Planet, Julianne Nicholson plays Janet, the warming, single mother “sun” around which her daughter, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) orbits like a planet. Adults are also drawn in by Janet, and circle around her, hoping to become permanent additions to her solar system. This well-acted, sly but slowly-paced dramedy benefits from a talented cast, and both strongly evokes the feeling of summer and a particular point in childhood when the parent is still the center of all but with change looming on the horizon.
Set in 1991 in western Massachusetts, there is much to admire in Janet Planet, including its fine cast and excellent performances from Julianne Nicholson and Zoe Ziegler. It’s always been about timing for Annie Baker. In her author’s note for her second produced play “Circle Mirror Transformation,” she lays down the law on how to accurately perform the silences as she’s written them: A “short pause” is one second, a “pause” is two, a “long pause” is closer to four and a “silence” is at least five.
“If you skip over or rush through these silences, you are performing a different play,” Baker writes in the note, published in 2010.
Now 14 years and seven plays later, the Pulitzer-winner has moved from the stage to cinema with her debut feature “Janet Planet,” which follows a single mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), and her doting 11-year-old daughter, Lacy (Zoe Ziegler), whose affections for her parent are reaching a quiet but definitive breaking point. Expanding its limited release from A24 this weekend after a New York opening, the film provides a fresh,...

There are few actors more well respected than the preternaturally gifted Julianne Nicholson. Recent notable credits include August: Osage County, Dream Scenario, Mare of Easttown (which won her an Emmy award), and, her latest, playwright Annie Baker’s first film, Janet Planet. In this episode, she talks in-depth about playing Janet in that remarkable film, her elusive preparation process, getting the environment to settle into her body, actually learning how to do acupuncture, why she lets her instinct lead the way, and much more. “Hi. I’m going to kill myself if you don’t come and get me.” It’s hard to gauge the seriousness of the threat, given that the speaker is an 11-year-old girl named Lacy (Zoe Ziegler), the delivery is simultaneously end-of-the-world apocalyptic and stunningly casual, and the time and location is a summer-camp headquarters in the middle of the night circa 1991. Still, the recipient of the call — her mom, Janet (Julianne Nicholson) — is there the next day, ready to take her daughter home.
Except Lacy has changed her mind.

It’s of course essential that the actor-auteur relationship has some bedrock of trust, and the last descriptor one could apply to Julianne Nicholson is “amateur.” Still, carrying the first feature by a playwright (brilliant or otherwise) is no small task, making so much more admirable her turn in Annie Baker’s Janet Planet––perhaps the most sui generis American film to get any sizable release in 2024.
As the film arrives in theaters, I had the fortune to speak with Nicholson via Zoom, our interview highlighting the inextricable bond between her acting process and Baker’s formalist framework. There’s also oversharing about the conditions under which I’ve now seen Janet Planet twice, a facet that, given the writer-director’s own approach to exhibition, is germane.
Julianne Nicholson: Where are you?
The Film Stage: I’m in New York.
Okay. I hear it is hot there.
Terribly, unbearably so.

The indie box office roared to life this weekend as Thelma from Magnolia Pictures saw a hefty $2.2 million on 1,280 screens and Searchlight Pictures’ Kinds of Kindness booked a stellar $75k per screen average at five theaters in LA and NY — the year’s highest per screen average and best overall limited opening.
Thelma is Magnolia’s widest release and the question of whether a broad audience would turn out for a film with a 93-year-old star is a resounding yes. It’s poignant, funny and June Squibb is so good, but this wasn’t by any means a slam dunk. Magnolia felt it was intergenerational and the audience would be as well. Squibb plays a feisty grandma, Parker Posey her uptight daughter, and Fred Hechinger the affectionate slacker grandson.
The distributor said a number of top runs are at Alamo Drafthouse theaters, indicating a younger crowd. But the matinees, which skew older,...

Since premiering at Telluride in Fall 2023, the directorial debut of playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker, “Janet Planet,” has been lauded as an understated gem, with Julianne Nicholson garnering particular praise for serving as one of the central forces the film gravitates around. The film opened in New York yesterday and hits Los Angeles on June 28th and with it, perhaps the recognition Nicholson finally deserves after her multi-decade career as an actress.
“Normally, the first thing that’s said about me is ‘underused,’ ‘underappreciated,’ ‘overlooked,’” said Nicholson in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, amused by the branding she’s been given. “Normally, I’m fine with it because I continue to work. But every once in a while, I feel like, ‘Oh, my God. I’m so tired — am I still trying to get people’s attention?’”

Playwright Annie Baker has already experienced tremendous success on the stage, having won a Pulitzer Prize for her play The Flick and a MacArthur Genius Grant for “mining the minutiae of how we speak, act, and relate to one another and the absurdity and tragedy that result from the limitations of language.” This philosophy is incredibly evident in her subtly moving film debut Janet Planet, which offers an invigorating take on familiar beats and ideas.
Janet Planet follows an introverted 11-year-old girl, Lucy, who spends the summer with her mother Janet, as they spend time with three people who affect them in profoundly different ways. It’s an incredibly restrained, unfussy film that refuses to pander to the audience in narrative or exposition, but it does reward patience in incredible ways.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Jennifer Lopez will be touring this summer after all. And while that’s certainly a crime against Pride Month if not humanity itself, it at least frees up some extra time–and money–to watch some movies. And while 2024 looks to be a rather tepid year for blockbusters, there are still plenty of Don’t-Miss Indies out there ready to crawl into your eyes and ears.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

"I have always had this knowledge that I could make any man fall in love with me if I really tried... And I think maybe it's ruined my life." This line really cuts deep. A24 has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Janet Planet, marking the feature directorial debut of playwright Annie Baker. This first premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last year, playing at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) and this year's Berlin Film Festival a few months ago. In her debut feature film, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Annie Baker captures a child’s experience of time passing and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother as she spends more time with her. The story follows 11-year-old Lacy, who spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass,...

The bond between a mother and daughter is, for lack of a better term, always fraught.
In playwright-turned-filmmaker Annie Baker’s feature directorial debut, that relationship is pulled to its edges as “Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Julianne Nicholson plays Janet, a mother called upon by her preteen daughter Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) to pick her up from summer camp. Lacy’s reason? She’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown. But maybe so is Janet. “Every moment in my life is hell,” Lacy tells her mother.
Baker’s “Janet Planet” follows Janet through Lacy’s eyes as the mother-daughter duo delve into a codependent balance onscreen, with Janet cycling through relationships and other relatable ups and downs. Elias Koteas, Sophie Okonedo, and Will Patton also star in the feature, which is set in 1991.

How does a girl perceive her mother? Lucy is facing that reality in the new film “Janet Planet.” Set in the early ‘90s, this coming-of-age film highlights how complicated the relationship can be. The A24 film hails from Annie Baker, who previously wrote an episode of the Prime Video series “I Love Dick.”
The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood noted the connection between Baker’s direction and Maria von Hausswolf’s cinematography, calling it “exquisite.” “Whether it’s a close-up of a dangling earring or Janet getting swept up in line dancing, the perspective is always intentional,” he wrote after its 2023 Telluride premiere.
