Whether you love the current trend of superhero cinema or hate them all with the fiery passion of Martin Scorsese after he stubbed his big toe on a particularly pointed corner, there's no question that Marvel's ascension and box office dominance is going to go down as one of the most interesting moments in movie history. It's certainly the biggest shift I've ever seen in over 20 years of being in the weeds covering the industry.
So, it's only right that we're getting an in-the-moment deeply researched chronicling of the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's called "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" written by the very talented trio of Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards. They talked to just about everybody in and around Marvel Studios and got all the warts-and-all insight you could want in a book like this. It doesn't release until October 10, 2023, but we have...

“Harry Potter” has had many imitators, but none so blatant or irredeemably over-the-top as Netflix franchise starter “The School for Good and Evil,” an extravagant YA costume show from “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig that follows two friends to an elite academy where the heroes and villains of future fairy tales are trained. The whole idea derives from a book series by Soman Chainani, though it’s obvious where it really comes from: the imagination of J.K. Rowling, who must be positively livid watching what looks like the most expensive episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” ever produced.
Feig goes full camp here, casting Kerry Washington and Charlize Theron to play the decked-out divas who oversee the enchanted institution’s two sides. The former embodies Professor Dovey, a prissy headmistress in Tweety Bird-yellow threads, who’s always going on about the rules, while Theron’s evil-minded Lady Lesso takes her fashion cues from Ilsa,...

“The neighborhood of 2,800 to 3,000.” That’s how many VHS tapes production designer David Digiacomo needed to bring together while creating the set for the Season 5 premiere of “You’re the Worst,” largely located in a ’90s-era video store.
“You’re the Worst” wasn’t the only project this spring to feature an endangered species of retail outlet — the Marvel blockbuster “Captain Marvel” included a short but memorable scene in which its own ’90s superhero crash-lands into a period-accurate recreation of a Blockbuster Video.
According to “Captain Marvel” production designer Andy Nicholson, “in some of our early concept art, she landed outside the Blockbuster, past a billboard. We spent ages choosing what that billboard could be. But then we decided to get rid of that as an idea and she just goes through the roof. It’s just more direct.”

Marvel Studios presents “Captain Marvel,” an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that introduces the McU’s first stand-alone, female-franchise title character—Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel.
Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” sidesteps the traditional originstory template, with Carol Danvers already possessing her superhero powers. Leaving her earthly life behind, she joins an intergalactic elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by their enigmatic commander, Yon-Rogg. But after Danvers has trained and worked with the Starforce team, and become a valued member, she finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. While on Earth she quickly lands on the radar of Nick Fury, and they must work together against a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls—the notorious Marvel bad guys made even more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities—and their leader, Talos, who is...

Brie Larson has finally concluded filming on ‘Captain Marvel’. Although the oscar winning actress has been teasing her role in Marvel’s first female-led movie for some time, it seems that Larson has finally completed her portion of filming after 75 days. To celebrate, Larson has taken to Instagram to showcase a signed slate from the production of the film. Check it out below:

Even though ‘Captain Marvel‘ began filming in late march, the true question here is if the actual production has any shooting left to do. I’m assuming so, since the schedule in the background is only referring to the days where Larson was shooting. Either way, this means that we’ll most likely be getting and official image of Larson as the titular character, with a trailer surely coming in the next few months as principal photography winds down.

[This is entry #1 from my set diary for Fox's upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Ubisoft video game Assassin's Creed. In this entry, I'll focus on the set itself, the design elements, and some of the filmmaking philosophy that's gone into this ambitious adaptation.]
It was a characteristically rainy, gray, dreary day in London as I sat down in a small van to get shuttled to the set of Assassin’S Creed. Full disclosure, this was going to be my first-ever set visit. While I’ve gotten offers before, this was the first time I was actually able to take a studio up on one. I remember there was a euphoric glaze that came over my brain as we pulled away from the city and started heading off into the suburbs to visit Pinewood Studios in Leavesden. For a lifelong film nerd like me, getting to go to Pinewood is like getting to visit the Emerald City or something. My mind was racing with the questions I’d ask Michael Fassbender and co., while also trying to remain open to taking in every moment of this experience.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Welcome to "Divergent" week on Moviefone! From March 10 - 14, we'll be premiering a week's worth of exclusive features -- video, behind-the-scenes blogs, photos, and more -- in anticipation of the hotly anticipated sci-fi/action adaptation. Here, Academy Award-nominated ("Gravity") production designer Andy Nicholson details how the look and feel of "Divergent"'s future Chicago went from page to screen.
"Divergent" is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. However, my first conversations with Director Neil Burger were about how we could show that this was an aspirational society, making the best of their situation and, on the surface, managing to function relatively well. Neil also wanted to bring a sense of cinematic reality to the film using Chicago as a character and its monumental scale to emphasize the space its population enjoyed. It is important that the audience believes the world Tris lives in, and that she wants to be a part of it.

The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).
And for those who know me, the Academy Awards is my Super Bowl! I.m a nerd when it comes to the Oscars! So I tried to predict the winners to help you with your Oscar pool.
And here's my complete and utterly fearless 2014 Oscar predictions:

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

Twenty-two of our 30 Oscar Experts expect Catherine Martin to win the Best Production Design Oscar for "The Great Gatsby." She has already prevailed at the Critics' Choice and BAFTA awards as well as with the Art Directors Guild. This support gives her leading 4/9 odds to finally take home a bookend to the Oscar she won in 2001 for "Moulin Rouge!" She also contends for Best Costume Design for "Gatsby" and won that category for "Moulin Rouge!" also. If she is vulnernable, the Experts can't agree on her likeliest rival. Five expect the award to go to Andy Nicholson for "Gravity": Scott Feinberg (THR), Thom Geier (EW), Michael Hogan (Vanity Fair), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), and Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com). That gives him odds of 5/1. Two others – Kevin Polowy (Yahoo!) and Jeff Wells (Hollywood Elsewhere) – think "12 Years a Slave...

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! As in Best Costume Design -- the category with which its outcome so frequently goes hand-in-hand -- ornamental period pieces and extravagant fantasies tend to dominate the Best Production Design category. So it's nice that the Academy gave us a fairly varied field this year: period pieces may still make up the majority of the field, but one is of a recent vintage, while the others could hardly be more opposed in their approach to days of year. Meanwhile, neither the futuristic fantasy nor the hi-tech outer-space adventure are as excessively designed as you might expect from nominees in this race. Moreover,...

Join us as we discuss our predictions for this year’s Oscars. Check out who our contributors think will win and add your own picks!
Predicting Oscars is not easy. There are no formulas or tricks to help us, and our own opinions about which films are most worthy are based on, let’s face it, a limited personal experience.
Some people claim that the winners are determined by their popularity; those nominees that are trending at the time the winners are selected are going to fare the best. Others claim that it is about previous work and effort. Those that have done the time and paid their dues will eventually be rewarded. Another perspective is that the Oscar winners are chosen in a way to help guide the future of film. Those with talent and potential are rewarded as an effort to bolster their careers and steer the industry in a particular direction.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

The extraordinary 13-minute opening of Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" is like a mini-movie, setting up the zero-gravity world in space, the two astronauts played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the mood, the tension, the crisis, and the metaphor. I break it down with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Emmanuel (Chivo) Lubezki, production designer Andy Nicholson, VFX supervisor Tim Webber, sound mixer Chris Munro, and editor Mark Sanger. "That opening shot is like the overture to a symphony, so we had to come up with the overture before knowing the rest of the movie," explains Lubezki about the most difficult shot in his prestigious career. "It is a series of shots that are very objective and very wide and presentational that become subjective. The idea was to grab and immerse the audience in the movie as soon as possible, and to sell the idea of this micro-gravity, who these characters are. They are...

Over the weekend the Art Directors Guild (Adg) handed out their crop of awards for Best Production Design in Period, Contemporary and Fantasy film and the winners in their respective categories were Catherine Martin for The Great Gatsby, K.K. From the USC Scripter nominees we discussed Friday the group chose 12 Years a Slave as the best adapted screenplay of the year. Since their prize goes to both the screenwriter and the original author that means John Ridley gave the acceptance speech but Solomon Northup was also a winner. He's been dead for 151 years so one wonders where his prize goes? I hope to the Faces of Solomon group.
