On tap right now is the first teaser for indie maven Mel House's latest terror tale Spavine, which is still hitting the fest circuit and currently causing quite a buzz with distributors. Dig it!
Spavine was written and directed by Tiffany Heath and stars Denton Blane Everett (Psychic Experiment), Tiffany Heath (Mulberry Stains), and Jake Austin. House produces with Heath and Nick W. Nicholson. Phil Nichols/Facades FX handled the special makeup effects, including the mask you see on the poster below.
"With this film the Spavine team set out to strike a balance between classic gore like Texas Chainsaw and Hitchcockian psychological suspense," says Heath. "Spavine has an art-house film look but isn't 'snobby' in that it really cares about the audience and gives them the proper dose of gore, terror, suspense, and overall real life madness. There is nothing supernatural in the movie. Every bit of this...

Look, bad things happen in the water. Kids pee in pools, ocean-dwelling, antisocial sharks eat... well, you know that story, and in the upcoming flick Dead Sea, an overgrown lamprey spends considerable time munching on lake-dipping, scantily-clad people’s bits. We caught up with the film’s star Devanny Pinn recently, who dished on the Brandon Slagle ‘blood and bikini’ feature. Written and directed by Slagle, who previously helmed the feature The Black Dahlia Haunting, Dead Sea stars (in addition to Pinn) Alexis Iacono (The Penny Dreadful Picture Show), Britt Griffith (Syfy's Ghost Hunters), James Duval (Donnie Darko), Chanel Ryan (Bad Kids Go to Hell), Candace Kita (Nip/Tuck), Tawny Amber Young and Kj McCormick, and revolves around a marine biologist who reluctantly returns to the town she grew up in, only to encounter the violent paranoia that has overtaken its locals as they prepare for the return of a...

We recently heard from filmmaker Lionell Hilliard, giving us a heads up on his new short film Goat Man. We managed to secure a teaser with a good look at the Goat Man, and we also learned the creepy origin story of the beast.
According to the info we have, Goat Man is a short that recently finished production and is looking to hit the festival circuit. Dig the image below and the trailer, which shows Goat Man looking a bit like Hellboy after being operated on by Dr. Moreau. The film is F/X heavy with Phil Nichols (aka The Fiendish Dr. Phil) of Facades FX running the show. The Facades FX team for Goat Man also included Melissa Nichols and Melissa Gale Dabney.
Oh, and one more thing: He's called Goat Man because some dude screwed a goat (apparently on several occasions) and Goat Man was conceived. Yikes!

We previously told you about Phil Nichols' upcoming stage production of Frankenstein at the Country Playhouse in Houston, Texas, and now we've gotten word that he also has a Frankenstein film project in the pipeline with the working title The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein.
Phil was kind enough to send over some preliminary artwork for The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein: The Undying Monster along with pictures of the finished sculpture of the facial prosthetic for both the stage and film projects. When we inquired whether showing off the sculpt might be a bit of a spoiler, Phil replied, "The look of the Creature really isn’t the surprise in the feature—the Bride will be!"
The Sick and Twisted Tale of Frankenstein is the first movie Nichols and his sister, Melissa, are doing through Facades FX Films. They are currently in the script and early pre-production phase.

*here be spoilers.
Director: Bob Willems.
Writers: Phil Nichols (story), Molly Vernon (screenplay).
The character of Renfield is quite the complex one to understand. In Bram Stoker's original treatment Dracula, he's characterized as the quintessential madman obsessed with the consumption of life. He serves a secret master, and Stoker never intended to have him survive past the events of the novel.
Just how he lasted to be featured in Renfield, the Undead almost needs to be asked. The presumption is that the staff of the asylum simply just buried him, and there he remained until the time was right for him to claw himself out of the dirt. If one interment was not enough, being buried six feet under was enough to really send him to go off the deep end.
Some people may see Phil Nichols performance of Renfield reminiscent of the Joker from "Batman." This actor certainly...

Renfield: The Un-Dead had its long awaited home video release earlier this week, and in honor of the occasion Melissa Nichols, one of the film's producers who also worked as production designer, art director, and special makeup effects artist/creature effects assistant (and had a small role in the film - talk about wearing a lot of hats!), sent over a batch of behind-the-scenes lobby cards for us to share.
Renfield, completed in 2010, is the newest in an aggressive lineup of Poison Apple productions and stars Phil Nichols (brother of Melissa) as Renfield, John W. Stevens as Count Dracula, Keli Wolfe, Tyler Tackett, Roxy Cook, Calvin Lafiton, and Paul Damon as Inspector Cranston.
Synopsis:

It's not quite Halloween 2011 yet, but if you live in the Houston, Texas, area, you just might want to mark your calendars for the 2012 Halloween season, as that's when a new stage production of Frankenstein will be hitting the Country Playhouse. Phil Nichols will be acting as both designer and director for the play, and he's provided us with a sneak peek of some of his pre-production concept art.
The script is based on the 1980's Broadway version that originally featured the late great John Carradine as the Blind Hermit Delacy. The show will run October 12th-27th, 2012, and will be part of a double bill. Frankenstein will play on the Main Stage while Evil Dead the Musical will play midnights after Frankenstein in the Black Box. Nichols, owner of Facades FX, is also designing the special creature effects for Evil Dead the Musical.

For Phil Nichols, his fascination with the horror genre began at a very young age. The writer/director/producer/actor/special effects guru (how's that for being multi-hyphenate?) spoke about how being born into a family with an appreciation for the spookier things in life sparked his many interests in working within the genre.
"My love for horror started when I was three years old in 1967 when I started watching 'Dark Shadows' every day because my mom was addicted to it," Nichols explained. "My whole family was really different, almost like we were The Addams Family or something. We'd carve pumpkins whenever we wanted, and we'd go trick-or-treating in July if we felt like it. So I've always been around people who like to be scared and have an appreciation for scaring others."
"Dark Shadows" was a gateway drug of sorts for Nichols. As he became increasingly fascinated with creatures and monsters,...

Hot on the heels of their successful premiere at the Bram Stoker Film Festival last month (click here for details and photos from that event), the folks behind Renfield: The Un-Dead are taking Afm by storm and in character.
Co-producer/production designer Melissa Nichols (who also appears in the film as Natasha the Vampire Oracle) dropped us a line with an update from Afm: "We're here now and have a screening of Renfield on Friday night. We had a screening on Wednesday, and it went really well. Everyone who saw it said it was fun and they loved it. On Thursday Lloyd Kaufman invited Phil [Nichols (who also produced and wrote the screenplay)] to make an appearance at the "Troma-dance" press conference and even gave him the mike to address the crowd.

Willems and crew are in heavy post and compositing for the film, but there is some other news: Jeff Walton (Curse of the Puppet Master, Shrieker, Invisible Mom, Invisible Dad, The Brotherhood 1&2) is composing the music for Renfield: The Undead. In addition to premiering at the Bram Stoker Film Festival in Whitby, England this October, Renfield will also be screened at The American Film Market in November.

Boggy Creek's writer/producer/director Brian T. Jaynes has released some photos of the Facades FX creature shop in action on the upcoming film - a whole gallery's worth in fact!

If there's anybody out in the indie world that sends us updates on their projects more often than the multi-talented Phil Nichols, I don't know who it is. Today he sent over a new batch of stills from Vampire Diaries Renfield, but best of all, they include the first shot of one of the creatures Nichols' Facades FX is doing for the film.
Phil, who, along with portraying Renfield, also wrote the screenplay, tells us, "Week 6 has wrapped. We did a lot of flying FX and aerial fight work on green screen for the climax. These pictures are from the Harkers' lair and all the naughty goings on that will happen in there..."
Besides Nichols, the stars include Julin, John Stevens (as Dracula), Cory Hart, Shelley Boozer, Mel House, Paul Damon, Joe Grisaffi, Tyler Tackett, and Keli Wolfe. The director is Bob Willems.
The new pictures begin on Page 4 of our Renfield gallery.

Even though there are still three weeks to go before Poison Apple Films wraps up production on Vampire Diaries Renfield (for which they've been providing regular updates to Dread Central), that hasn't stopped the company from looking ahead to its next projects, one of which is promisingly entitled Dinosaurs Unleashed.
Phil Nichols, who portrays Renfield in the aforementioned Vampire Diaries Renfield and also wrote the screenplay, will be handling directorial duties for Dinosaurs Unleashed. He sent over the following brief overview of what we can expect:
"It's a horror/sci-fi pic along the lines of Sssssss and the Carnosaur franchise and is about a mad scientist conducting DNA experiments in a small Texas town. We are using some of the recent soft tissue science discovered in dinosaur fossils to build our plot around.
Facades FX will be handling the gore, creatures, and dinosaurs; and casting is just beginning. We've shot some tests,...

Phil Nichols, who portrays Renfield in the currently filming Vampire Diaries Renfield, dropped us a line with an update on the shoot and provided us with a batch of new photos to share with Dread Central readers.
Here's what Phil told us, "We're winding down Week 5 and are 3/4 through shooting the script. We are working to make the deadline to premiere the film at the Bram Stoker Film Festival in Whitby, England this October.
Last night we wrapped the 1895 flashbacks with Renfield. We're keeping Count Dracula's make-up a secret and won't release pics of his face until the movie premieres, but here's a look at the Brides of Dracula (Denise Williamson, Reem Al-Hellou, and Michelle James)."
Along with Nichols (who also wrote the screenplay) and the aforementioned Brides, the stars include Julin, John Stevens (as Dracula), Cory Hart, Shelley Boozer, Mel House, Paul Damon, Joe Grisaffi, Tyler Tackett, and Keli Wolfe.

It's the start of Week 3 of shooting on Vampire Diaries Renfield in Houston, Texas, and Renfield himself, Phil Nichols, sent over a batch of new stills -- and a pretty cool lobby card -- for the film.
Along with Nichols (who also wrote the screenplay), the stars include Julin (Boggy Creek, Cherry Bomb), Denise Williamson (Boggy Creek, Cherry Bomb), Cory Hart (Boggy Creek, Stop Loss), Shelley Boozer (Bloodsucking Babes from Burbank, Toxic), Mel House (writer/director of Walking Distance, Possum Walk), Paul Damon (Walking Distance), Joe Grisaffi (Zombiefied, Walking Distance, Pirates of the Caribbean), Tyler Tackett (Possum Walk), and Keli Wolfe (Possum Walk).
Creature and make-up FX are being handled by Nichols (talk about multi-tasking!) and Facades FX (Boggy Creek, Walking Distance, Ace Ventura II, Powder, Jason's Lyric, S.I.C.K.: Serial Insane Clown Killer), and the director is Bob Willems (S.I.C.K.: Serial Insane Clown Killer).

Phil Nichols of Poison Apple Films wrote in to us today with a quick update on the cast of Vampire Diaries: Renfield, which includes one very interesting candidate for a lead role.
"We have signed J. Eddie Peck from Curse II the Bite and Kyle Xy to play the hero Detective Paul Cranston," says Nichols. "And Austin Colt (son of J. Eddie Peck) will make his debut as the villainous Quincy Harker, the son of Dracula. Phil Nichols is Renfield, Roxann Hixon is Mina Harker, Glen Lambert is Willard Cain, Vance Johnson is Dr. Seward. Facades FX is handling the creature FX, and Jaroslav Vodehnal is directing."
Well, all of that sounds okay, but who is that interesting candidate I spoke of? Phil continues ...
"We are in early stages of getting Kane Hodder on-board as Count Dracula."
Kane as Dracula? Well, he pulled off Ed Gein ... Guess we'll have to see.

Last night an e-mail showed up with info and the first pics from a new indie vampire film called Bram Stoker’s Vampire Diaries. Normally I would dismiss this out of hand since, well, vampire movies generally suck, but something about this project made me want to share it with you guys.
Vampire Diaries is the first of a planned eight(!) films from indie production outfit Poison Apple Films. It was produced, written by, and stars Phil Nichols, who also did most of the FX work as well. Now that’s the indie spirit! The story follows what happened to Mina and Renfield after Dracula’s demise; from the look of the pics neither of them adjusted too well to being without the caped one.
Through his company Facades FX Nichols also recently worked on Mel House’s Walking Distance, Barry Tubb’s Javelina and one of Foy’s favorite films of all time,...
