An odd but lively mixture of slasher tropes and slacker comedy, about a digital voyeur who may have spied on a female serial killer
The chasm between digital life and meatspace may be the only truly new subject cinema has had over the last 20 years. Of all the current angles on it, Ramin Niami’s bric-a-brac assemblage of webcam thriller, sitcom and slasher film is certainly one of the more original – even if it doesn’t finally hold together.
Dakota Shapiro plays Henry, an improbably handsome voyeur and shut-in who has barricaded himself into a room in the Los Angeles apartment he has inherited, and spends his time watching women on a set of webcams he has hacked. There’s musician Sky, webcam girl Tess, new immigrant Linnea … and Henry talks at them all as if they’re old friends, when he’s not nervously wolfing downers in response to anything that upsets him.

Henry (Dakota Shapiro) has had a difficult life. The abuse he endured from his father made it so he can barely leave the house. Talking to strangers (let alone women) is a non-starter. And he can’t even open the door to his dad’s old room for fear of thinking he might somehow be inside despite promising never to come back. Henry’s existence is thus confined to the den. He sleeps on the couch, takes late-night walks to stay isolated, and sublets his old room to Eric (Luke Cook), an aspiring actor from Australia, to pay the bills his lack of a job cannot. So his days are spent alone on his computer with “friends”: six unsuspecting women he watches through hacked webcams.
He’s the so-called Eye Without a Face, as writer-director Ramin Niami’s latest is titled. Henry “cares” about these women and believes himself...

Opening with an incredibly creepy scene featuring a woman walking slowly and methodically down a hallway, weapon in hand, shouting out for Henry – swiftly pulling back a sheet to… Hold on, let’s back up a minute. Because that’s what Eye Without a Face does – showing back to an earlier point in time as we meet Henry, an agoraphobic and anxious young man living in Los Angeles, who hacks into the webcams of various young women who inhabit the city. He watches over them in their daily lives, seeing himself as their guardian angel. Or is that guardian creep?

Dakota Shapiro and Oliver Cooper in ‘Valley of the Boom.’
After making his Us TV debut in the National Geographic docudrama Valley of the Boom Dakota Shapiro was thrilled when he landed a role in the pilot of The Lost Boys, adapted from Joel Schumacher’s 1987 horror comedy movie.
The Australian-born, La-based actor had a terrific time shooting the pilot for The CW network, produced by Rob Thomas and directed by Catherine Hardwicke.
He played David, the sexy, dangerous and immortal vampire portrayed in the original film by Kiefer Sutherland.
The CW chiefs weren’t happy with the pilot scripted by Heather Mitchell and ordered a total reshoot, which retained just two members of the original cast: Shapiro and Medalion Rahimi, who played the carefree Californian Stella, David’s love interest.
However that hasn’t happened and the network’s hold on Dakota has expired so he is now busily auditioning.

Our International Sales Agent (Isa) of the Day coverage is back again for this year's Cannes Film Festival. We will feature successful, upcoming, innovative and trailblazing agents from around the world, and cover the latest trends in sales and distribution. Beyond the numbers and deals, this segment will also share inspirational and unique stories of how these individuals have evolved and paved their way in the industry, and what they envision for the new waves in global cinema.
Isa's of the Day will be posted regularly during Cannes, but the buzz has already begun with the recent release of the festival lineup -- so expect to see Isa updates over the coming weeks.
The first Isa of the Day is Lise Romanoff, Managing Director and CEO of Worldwide Distribution at Vision Films. Based in Sherman Oaks, California, Vision Films is an independent Worldwide Sales Agent and VOD Aggregator of over 500 Feature Films, 500 Documentaries and 100 different Music Programs from some of the most prolific independent film producers in the world.
In early 2013, Vision Films expanded into the world of domestic distribution with the creation of their own DVD/ VOD label, releasing films day-and-date on DVD and VOD through all cable and digital platforms such as Comcast, Directv, Dish, At&T, iTunes and Amazon, and retailers including RedBox, Walmart, Best Buy and Target. It is one of the few independent companies with a worldwide presence to also have a domestic division. Vision Films works directly with all its platforms and has no middlemen, releasing at least 2 - 3 titles on DVD and 3 - 4 titles on VOD every month.
Since opening their doors as a DVD/ VOD label, Vision Films has released an array of independent feature films including Hamlet And Hutch with Burt Reynolds; Wreckers, a coming-of-age story starring Benedict Cumberbatch; The Employer, an intense thriller starring Malcolm McDowell; Contract Killers is a non-stop martial arts action picture; and Sunset Strip, a music and pop culture documentary that chronicles Strip from its origins in the 1920s through today featuring Slash, Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Dan Aykroyd, Keanu Reeves, Ozzy Osbourne, Hugh Hefner, and music from Jane’s Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, and more.
The Vision Films catalog also has stories of global consciousness, including Comedy Warriors, a documentary where Zach Galifianakis, Lewis Black and Bob Saget help disabled soldiers heal through humor by teaching them stand-up comedy; Finding Happiness by Ted Nicholaou, a spiritual journey starring Elisabeth Röhm; Femme: Women Healing The World with Sharon Stone by Emmanuel Itier; and Shirin In Love, a romantic comedy starring Nazanin Boniadi by Ramin Niami about a quirky Iranian-American young woman who goes against tradition to follow her heart.
Lise Romanoff recently took the time to speak with SydneysBuzz:
What are buyers looking for?
2014 has been a vibrant year! Buyers are looking for product that can play across all channels of distribution: Theatrical, Home Video, VOD and Television. VOD has opened up a lot of doors for “niche” product because the Internet is the best way to find a specific fan base. We are offering star-studded feature films and top-notch documentaries that entertain and inspire. We attend all of the film markets, as well as the TV markets, and even the specialty territory-specific regional markets.
Where are the strongest markets?
U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Japan are the strongest countries, but for the most part, sales are evenly spread around the world.
How are sales going?
Sales are up about 30% this year, but we are working harder than ever. Many of the films that we started pre-selling last year are now completed.
What are your intentions for Cannes?
We're looking to sell the films we are bringing to Cannes, and we're looking to acquire new family, action and animated features.
What is your line-up for Cannes?
Vision Films’ Cannes line-up includes God Loves Caviar, the journey of Ioannis Varvakis from humble Greek pirate to international caviar millionaire with Catherine Deneuve and John Cleese; The Identical, earmarked for a wide screen theatrical release this fall in the U.S. stars Ashley Judd, Seth Green and Ray Liotta and introduces Blake Rayne as the identical twin of the biggest rock star in the world; As Dreamers Do, a bio pic about the early years of Mr. Walt Disney; 10 Things I Hate About You is the sequel to Gil Junger’s 10 Things I Hate About Life starring Evan Rachel Wood and Thomas McDonell; Fear Clinic with Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) will bring a new meaning to phobias this fall; and Mantervention, a sexy comedy with Chloe Bridges, where Travis Van Winkle shows Nick Roux how to get over his ex and #ontothenext.
Why include globally conscious films in your catalog?
A lot of documentaries make you think. It's important to take a few minutes and look at the world around us. Documentaries traditionally don’t garner as much revenue as feature films, but it makes me feel very good to have them in our catalog. I also feel that if I have this type of product, I'll attract other companies that have the same mission to release films that give back to the world.
We'll always continue to sell good horror or action films, but selling films with good messages makes me very happy at this point in my career.
As far as distribution is concerned, VOD is a good type of niche for this programming. On the long-term view... as the Internet develops, and people have go-to sites for these types of films, it will work. We will be able to develop these channels, bring like-minded communities together, and generate more money for the filmmakers so they can continue to produce these kinds of films.
How did Vision Films start?
Founded in 1997 and based in Sherman Oaks, California, Vision Films started in the garage of it founder, and now has grown to become an independent Worldwide Distributor and VOD Aggregator of thousands of feature films, documentaries and music Programs. Vision Films manages all available rights from Theatrical, Video, Television and VOD/ Digital Media in both the International and domestic marketplaces. Vision works closely with producers to develop a special marketing plan as well as a strategy to license their film(s) to the right distributors around the world through relationships cultivated over nearly 24 years.

It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of former Iranian nationals and their offspring live in Los Angeles (especially between Beverly Hills and West L.A., the heart of "Tehrangeles"), so it can't be said there's not an audience for this utterly vanilla Iranian-Angelino romantic comedy.

While audiences are by now familiar with formulas and templates of romantic comedies, sometimes adding a cultural twist can keep things fresh, and certainly, that's what writer/director Ramin Niami is aiming for with "Shirin In Love." Featuring "Homeland" star Nazanin Boniadi (aka Fara Sherazi from season 3), she plays the titular Shirin, a young Iranian-American living in Los Angeles, long engaged to an Iranian plastic surgeon, who breaks the bonds of loyalty and tradition when she starts seeing another man, starting a culture clash. And in this clip from the film, Shirin is caught in bed shortly after her mysterious lover has left, much to the exasperation of her fiancé. Co-starring Riley Smith, Amy Madigan, Maz Jobrani and George Wallace, "Shirin In Love" opens on March 14th. Check out the clip and poster for the film below.

During the past American Film Market (Afm) 7 &7 Producer;s Sales Services announced they would be the international sales agent for the U.S. romantic comedy Shirin in Love. It was also confirmed that the film will see a U.S. theatrical release on an exclusive basis with AMC in at least 15 major markets at AMC theaters. For its first market screening, the film will be part of the Efm in Berlin this February.
Written and directed by by Ramin Niami the film is set in the affluent Iranian-American Beverly Hills community, and stars Nazanin Boniadi ( Homeland’s new CIA analyst, How I Met Your Mother’s Nora) as Shirin, a quirky twenty-something who, on the eve of her wedding, causes turmoil for her loving family and for her fiancé when an enigmatic handsome outsider opens her eyes to a world very different from the glitz of ‘Tehrangeles.” Riley Smith and Academy Award nominee Amy Madigan co-star with comedians Maz Jobrani and George Wallace rounding out the international cast.
7 & 7’s managing director Maura Ford said: “Shirin in Love is such an appealing movie for the international market. Boasting a lovely leading lady with all the daffy charm of a young Goldie Hawn and a leading man to die for, it affectionately satirizes the Iranian-American community but also carries a very positive message of ‘different but the same’ that will strike a chord internationally not only in the burgeoning Middle Eastern markets but also in an increasingly multicultural Europe.”
Producer Karen Robson also mentioned that the company has produced a superb Farsi dubbed version that will also screen in select Us cities and will be available to foreign distributors

She will continue to serve as a consultant to Capitol Films, a London-based international production and sales company. At the TFF, Wallace is repping Ramin Niami's in-competition "Paris", starring Chad Allen and Bai Ling. She also repped the closing-night film at Slamdance this year, Allan Mindel's "Milwaukee, Minnesota" as well as George Sluizer's Spanish- and Portuguese-language "The Stoneraft".
Opening with a spooky shot traveling up the stairs of a run-of-the-mill New York tenement, with the sounds of a woman seemingly in mortal peril on the soundtrack, "Somewhere in the City" gets off to a ribald start as the screamer is revealed to be Sandra Bernhard's manic character in bed with a lover.
Inspired by Maxim Gorky's "The Lower Depths" and deftly directed by Iranian-born Ramin Niami, the low-budget ensemble comedy debuted at the 1997 Seattle Film Festival and has unspooled at numerous international fests. Probably destined to get lost in the indie shuffle as a limited theatrical release, the Artistic License film opened Friday in New York and bows Oct. 2 in Los Angeles.
In his feature debut as director, Niami (producer of "Manhattan by Numbers"), who co-wrote the script with Patrick Dillon, amusingly probes a multicultural milieu that reflects the diversity of the city and era, and he doesn't take himself too seriously when the film addresses important issues.
Concentrating on six neighbors all living desperate lives, with lots of overlapping, "Somewhere" is a Bohemian rhapsody that's exactly the sum of its parts -- uneven but entertaining with often sprightly dialogue and predictable conflicts and character development.
Bernhard is a therapist who's unlucky in love and desperate to find a man with whom to have children. Chinese star Bai Ling is a recent arrival in America, under pressure to marry one of her countrymen but developing a taste for skimpy outfits and a punkish attitude. Peter Stormare ("Fargo") is a serious gay actor who pins his hopes on appearing in a movie remake of "I Dream of Jeannie".
The inspired casting continues with Italian star Ornella Muti as the unhappy wife of the building's superintendent. She has a fling with an inept thief played by Robert John Burke. In the least interesting subplot, an amateur revolutionary Paul Anthony Stewart) with a cell phone and a nagging mother develops a crush on Ling's character.
One of the funniest bits has former New York mayor Ed Koch kidnapped and mildly abused by Stewart's clueless would-be terrorist. But the most satisfying material involves the friendship of Bernard's neurotic busybody and Ling's sassy rebel. Veteran French actress Bulle Ogier, Linda Dano and Bill Sage appear in small roles, while Bernard sings "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" on the terrific soundtrack that includes original music by Velvet Underground founder John Cale.
