British travel writer best known for his 1958 narrative about his trek
though Afghanistan "A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush". His first work in
1956 was about a voyage to Australia aboard a Finnish grain ship ("The
Last Grain Race"), and later wrote "Love and War in the Apennines" in
1971 which chronicled his experiences during WWII and the woman who
helped him escape from a POW camp in northern Italy. She later became
his wife.
