A gloriously intricate replica of Red Dwarf’s cluttered Sleeping Quarters by BRO3 has just passed 10,000 supporters on Lego Ideas.
The detailed 1,953-brick build comes with five minifigs – Dave Lister, Arnold J. Rommer, Kryten, Cat, and Kristine Kochanski – and tons of in-jokes and references, including Dwane Dibbley’s thermos and the Polymorth in his rabbit and sausage forms.

Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, the usually relatively quiet Red Dwarf Twitter account announced this:
#RedDwarf #RedDwarfReborn@realrobgrant @DougRDNaylor @CCfunkandsoul Chris Barrie @DannyJohnJules @bobbyllew @normanlovett1 Hattie Hayridge @Tordfc pic.twitter.com/LQH9LPgWRB
— Red Dwarf (@RedDwarfHQ) March 10, 2023
The statement read:
“Rob Grant and Doug Naylor are delighted to announce that the ongoing dispute over the Red Dwarf rights has been resolved.
Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best.
Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!” (sic)
This came as a bit of a bolt from the blue, particularly among anyone who hadn’t been closely following the show since its last special, ‘The Promised Land’, in 2020.

The premise for the long-running sci-fi sitcom "Red Dwarf" is as hilarious as it is existentially troubling. On the show's titular mining ship, a ne'er-do-well slugabed named Dave Lister (Craig Charles) is thrown into the ship's suspended animation prison for a minor infraction. When the ship's sentient computer Holly (Norman Lovett) releases Lister from captivity, he finds that two million years have passed following a radiation accident that killed the crew. The ship has been adrift in the cosmos ever since, and its exact location is unknown. In order to prevent Lister from going mad from loneliness, the computer creates an interactive hologram of his old roommate, a snotty, incompetent do-gooder named Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie). They hate each other but have to work together as they may be the last vestiges of humanity.

In space, no one can hear you grumble about your s****y job. The title sequence for "Red Dwarf" opens with a guy in a grubby spacesuit, miserably daubing paint on the exterior of the eponymous mining vessel. When the camera pulls back we can see why he's unhappy; he is working on the "F" of the ship's name which must be about 80 feet high.
It could be a scene from "Dark Star" or "Alien," two movies that showed us that space travel will be pretty boring and arduous for the regular Joes who keep the lights on during long hauls between the stars. Those films provided inspiration for "Red Dwarf" writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who set their cult British show on a spaceship three million years in the future. Only one of its characters is a living human, but that doesn't stop them from following the classic...

Two years after series Xii aired on Dave back in October 2017, confirmation arrived that Red Dwarf was coming back to TV, but not (yet) in the form of a full series Xiii. Instead, the boys from the Dwarf were returning for a feature-length special.
Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Norman Lovett will all appear in ‘The Promised Land’, a 90-minute episode due to air this April on Dave.
Regrettably, the London press screening and cast Q&a for ‘The Promised Land’ had to be cancelled due to the global spread of Covid-19, but here’s all the latest about the new episode, including a teaser trailer and the beautiful new poster.
Red Dwarf: The Geek Lowdown

Renewed or cancelled? So far, only the extended special has been officially confirmed

Red Dwarf will return in 2020 and you can apply to be in the audience.
After rumors were quashed of a brand-new series of Red Dwarf in the works, we were left wondering if we'd be seeing Lister and the gang back in action in the near (or far) future, but UKTV has put us out of our misery this week by announcing that a 90-minute special is set to be filmed in December.
Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn will all return for the one-off special, which is to be written and directed by series co-creator Doug Naylor, and will air on Dave some time next year.
“I’m really excited to get back on board with the boys from the Dwarf," said star Craig Charles in a statement. "I can’t wait to discuss Robert’s prostate problems, Chris Barrie’s hip replacement...

If that's the case, it fills those boots rather spectacularly, while simultaneously playing as fast and loose with continuity as it always has.

GeoCities websites, instant messaging, free AOL discs and blocking up the phone line - today we’re gonna party like we’ve just connected at 56 kbit/s. That is, we’re going to take a nostalgic look at the early days of the World Wide Web.
Okay, okay - we know that the Internet existed before the web and that there were other ways of connecting to distant computer networks before the Internet was even established. What we’re interested in is a period that began around the middle of the 90s when the World Wide Web first became a popular destination. Let’s get something straight though - just because we miss something, it doesn’t mean that we want it back.

Adam Nimoy chats to us about his documentary honouring his father, the late, great Leonard Nimoy.
The death of Leonard Nimoy was a sad occasion for all fans of Star Trek, but filmmaker and director Adam Nimoy didn’t just lose a cultural icon – he lost a father. As a result, Nimoy’s planned documentary about Spock and the character’s impact was expanded to examine his late father’s life and the the not-always-perfect relationship between the two of them.

Red Dwarf XI comes to an end with Can Of Worms, a rare Cat-focused episode and a strong finish to the run...

11.6 Can Of Worms
Anyone who’s ever owned a cat will tell you that a lot of what they get up to, particularly when they’re outside the house, is a mystery. So in some ways, it’s fitting that Red Dwarf’s Cat is easily the character we know the least about. He’s only had one true focus episode, back in the very first series, and mostly exists to make scenes funnier. But on a ship with three other sort-of men, he’s had very little opportunity to indulge in one particular feline pastime - until now.

11.4 Officer Rimmer
Many people believe that science fiction is at its best when it reflects real world issues. Officer Rimmer, the fourth episode of Red Dwarf’s eleventh series, is a prime example of this, tackling the matter of 3D printing as the Starbug crew encounter a ship with bio-printing technology. It’s another example of writer-director Doug Naylor striving to stay current and tell stories that could only be told in 2016.
Easily the best riff on the 3D printing concept comes very early in the episode, as a ‘paper’ jam causes the captain of the other ship to come out wrong,...

Note: This is our spoiler-filled review of episode 3 of Red Dwarf XI, currently available on the UKTV Play app. It aired on Dave at 9pm on Thursday the 6th of October.
As we noted a few weeks ago, Red Dwarf has undergone a lot of changes over its 18-year history, at each stage picking up new fans who are attracted to the show in one particular format. This, combined with the highly subjective nature of comedy, means that it’s impossible for Red Dwarf XI to please everybody all the time. Twentica and Samsara, both of which we thought were fantastic episodes, have attracted everything from wild enthusiasm to hard-boiled pessimism - and nobody seems to be able to agree on which one was better.

Samsara simultaneously harks back to classic Red Dwarf while trying something new, resulting in some outstanding comedy moments...
This review contains spoilers.
11.2 Samsara
The television landscape has changed a lot since Red Dwarf made its debut back in 1988. One of the more interesting developments of the 21st century has been that, thanks in no small part to shows like Lost, non-linear storytelling is now as much a part of the language of television as the cliff-hanger or the third-act twist. In a series that has, with rare exceptions, always featured at least one of its regulars in any given scene, Samsara breaks with Red Dwarf convention in a major way.

The history of Red Dwarf is a series of jarring transitions, with the series evolving over the years to fit in with its surroundings (and, of course, its budget). The sprawling sci-fi of Red Dwarf V was different to the claustrophobia of Red Dwarf VI and VII, which underwent a massive transformation into the populated world and broader humour of Red Dwarf VIII, at which point the show went off air until the super low-budget real-world antics of Back to Earth… You get the idea.

Red Dwarf XI is almost upon us. Twentica, the first episode of the new series will be available to watch online at UKTV from Thursday the 15th of September, and airs on Dave at 9pm on Thursday the 22nd of September.
Twentica is an ambitious, great-looking and very funny series opener, followed up by Samsara, a second entertaining episode that feels like quintessential bickering-in-space Red Dwarf.
During the swanky Bafta series launch, co-creator and writer/director Doug Naylor was asked by a member of the audience about how he envisaged the final ever episode of Red Dwarf might look. Here’s what he said:

Red Dwarf fans are used to having to wait between series, and the gap between X and XI has been tougher than biting into a space weevil.
But spin our nipple nuts and send us to Alaska - the waiting is almost over as as Rimmer, Lister, Kryten and Cat will be back in 2016 for a brand new run. Here's everything you need to know about the small rouge one.
When is it back?
There are no exact dates yet, but XI is expected to land on Dave in the summer of 2016 at the earliest.
Writer and co-creator Doug Naylor recently denied reports that it could be as early as the spring, so we could be waiting up to a year for its launch.

Twenty seven years, umpteen light years, several different realities and a curry monster later, and Red Dwarf is now officially the second longest running sci-fi series of all time (it'd be first if it weren't for that pesky Doctor).
But though the Dwarf is still with us, fans have been left adrift in space for the time being – it's been three years since the show's triumphant return to form with 2012's Series X, and it'll likely be another year before series 11 hits Dave.
Making it, therefore, as good a time as any for Digital Spy to decide definitely how those ten series stack up against each other, and rank them from truly worst to glorious best. Disagree? Let us know below...

A Red Dwarf movie was announced in 2000, and news on it would follow for years afterwards. So: what happened?
When the eighth series of Red Dwarf left our screens in 1999, with the titular (nanobotically-reconstituted) mining vessel being devoured by a highly corrosive micro-organism, it left us with the words “The End” emblazoned over the image, before being replaced by “The Smeg It Is.”
And then, nothing.
It was ten years before the boys from the Dwarf were back on our screens, albeit for a three-episode run on Dave. But that lost decade was not spent watching re-runs of The Flintstones, nor was everyone trapped in a completely immersive video game indistinguishable from reality. Most of it involved co-creator Doug Naylor (his comedy partner Rob Grant left the show after season six), trying to get a movie off the ground.
This had not been the plan. But with the BBC rejecting...

Red Dwarf is coming back. Dave recently confirmed that it has commissioned two new series of the show, for 2016 and 2017 respectively, to follow on from its airing of reboots Back To Earth (unofficially referred to as Series IX) in 2009 and Series X in 2012. This is exciting news. While the newest seasons certainly weren’t the best that the show has produced (and it’s debatable whether anything could even match up to the brilliance of the first 6 series), they were certainly enjoyable and true to the exceptional legacy of Red Dwarf.
There have been very few details leaked to this point. It’s difficult to know exactly what direction Doug Naylor is planning to take the show, and whether it will directly follow the events of Series X or do what the newer seasons did and skip forward in time somewhat. Casting decisions generally still remain under wraps, as do plots and scripts.

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Classic British sci-fi comedy "Red Dwarf" will not die, in fact the acclaimed sitcom is set to make a come back for two more full seasons.
UK freeview channel Dave has announced plans for an eleventh and twelfth season of the show. The news came with a brief video teasing the new episodes which will air in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The two seasons will be shot back-to-back towards the end of this year.
Co-creator Doug Naylor says: "[We were] originally asked for more shows back in 2012. but frustratingly it's taken until now to get our ducks in a row and all the boys available at the same time. Now they are, we're all absolutely delighted."
Star Craig Charles will be leaving his decade-long role on "Coronation Street" to shoot the new "Red Dwarf" seasons.

The boys from the Dwarf are posse-ing again. Three years on from Red Dwarf X, Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and the Cat will return to UK freeview channel Dave for series XI and Xii, to be broadcast over the next two years. The news was announced accompanied with a familiar theme in the video below over the weekend. The sci-fi sit-com's original run was on the BBC for eight series between 1988 and 1999. It was then picked up by Dave in 2009 for an odd three-episode mash-up taking in Coronation Street and Blade Runner, before its full six-episode run three years ago (check out Empire's special podcast here).Despite the long hiatus, its new episodes were still able to pull in audiences close to (and occasionally over) two million. Red Dwarf XI enjoyed its Bafta launch last night. Here's the cast discussing their favourite episodes from almost thirty years...
A very fun, lively Q&A followed the Bafta screening of Red Dwarf's first two series XI episodes this week, which demonstrated the bubbling chemistry between the central cast members who were full of gags, inside jokes and collectively remembered anecdotes from almost three decades of working together.
Asked that perennial Q&A question, to name their favourite episode across every series, here's what the cast said:
Chris Barrie: It’s easier to pick out shows from my own point of view that maybe weren’t so… Stasis Leak, to this day I still can’t work out what went on there! [Laughs] ‘Just come out of the table Chris and say your lines!’
Craig Charles: To be fair, I can’t even remember being in that one!

Smeg heads, rejoice! Doug Naylor has announced two more series of Red Dwarf, on Dave…
Here’s some good news – Doug Naylor, co-creator of Red Dwarf, has announced two more series of the cult sci-fi comedy.
Like series 10, the new 11th and 12th series will air on Dave. Of course, in typical Red Dwarf fashion, the series titles will actually be stylised Red Dwarf XI and Red Dwarf Xii.
Both series of the boys from the dwarf’s new adventures will shoot back to back later this year. They will air in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Before then, Dave have added a bespoke collection of Dwarf episodes to their online streaming service UKTV Play, to tide you over in the meantime.
It’s no surprise, really, considering that Red Dwarf: Back To Earth (the first new episodes of the show to be shown on Dave) earned the status of biggest non-terrestrial commission,...

Naylor said: "[Dave's general manager] Steve North and everyone at UKTV have been so supportive of Red Dwarf from the start of their involvement with the show.
"Steve originally asked for more shows back in 2012 but frustratingly it's taken until now to get our ducks in a row and all the boys available at the same time. Now they are, we're all absolutely delighted."
Red Dwarf originally aired eight series on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, before Dave revived...

Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

How’s the outlook for Red Dwarf XI looking? Owww! It’s looking nice!
Although it seems more recent in this writer’s head, Red Dwarf X was actually aired over two years ago.
As such, people have been asking the cast of the show whether they’ll be popping back onto our telly-boxes any time soon.
Cat actor Danny John-Jules has confirmed, then, that the team are meeting next week to see where things are at.
“All I can say,” he told Digital Spy, “is that Doug Naylor is slaving away writing scripts and we've got lunch next week. That's as far as I can tell you!”
“I have the glorious privilege to know that that's the last thing that I ever have to worry about with Red Dwarf - the scripts. I'm quite confident that whatever comes off that pen will be quite funny,” he added.
"It's a great position to be in.

Red Dwarf will reportedly return to Dave in autumn 2015.
Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn from the sci-fi sitcom's cast made the announcement at the recent Sci-Fi Scarborough convention, says WhatCulture.
John-Jules, who plays Cat, revealed that shooting on the 11th series will begin in October.
Earlier this year, the actor told Digital Spy that new Red Dwarf episodes were being written by co-creator Doug Naylor.
"Doug Naylor is writing as we speak. He told me off for ringing him up the other day and asking about it," John-Jules joked. "He said I was interfering with his writing."
Red Dwarf originally aired on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, before Dave revived the show with the Back to Earth specials in 2009.

Three new half-hour one-off specials will be broadcast on the channel later this year, featuring the likes of Hugh Dennis, My Mad Fat Diary star Sharon Rooney and Mark Heap.
Steptoe and Son, Till Death Us Do Part, Are You Being Served? and Last of the Summer Wine are among classic BBC sitcoms which were born out of former BBC Comedy Playhouse seasons.

"We want BBC One to fly the flag of popular British comedy and want this dedicated space to promote tomorrow's classic comedy today."

It's been a whopping 30 years since Spitting Image first hit our screens on ITV in 1984. The satirical puppet show quickly became one of the most-watched shows of the 1980s and early 1990s.
I wasn't able to fully appreciate the series when it was first on TV. When I watched it in the early '90s as a child, I found it funny mainly because of the silly puppets, even if I didn't quite understand what was going on. But in retrospective viewings, it still holds up as a genuinely hilarious satire of politics, entertainment, sport and general UK culture of the era.
It's quite incredible to think that Spitting Image hasn't been on air since 1996. To put that into perspective, the Spice Girls had only just been unleashed, Tony Blair hadn't been elected yet, and Lorde had only just been born.
As a show that is heavily reliant on topical...

Danny John-Jules has confirmed to Digital Spy that series 11 of Red Dwarf is currently being written, but further details about the show's future remain unclear.
The space sitcom, which stars Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, Craig Charles and Robert Llewellyn, returned for its first full series in over a decade in 2012. The show's 10th series brought in record ratings for UKTV's Dave channel and the cast have all expressed an interest in returning for series 11.
Red Dwarf's Greatest Episodes: Friday Fiver
Doug Naylor posted on Twitter in October that Dave still hadn't commissioned series 11, but actor John-Jules said that hadn't stopped the writer cracking on with scripts.
"Doug Naylor is writing as we speak. He told me off for ringing him up the other day and asking about it," said John-Jules. "He said I was interfering with his writing."
He also partially explained why there has been so little news about the new series,...

Red Dwarf writer Doug Naylor has played down reports of a new series being commissioned, insisting that an 11th series of the sci-fi comedy is yet to be confirmed.

However, Dave has still not given the green light to a new run of episodes, and it is now a year since the show returned to screens.
Actor Robert Llewellyn posted a blog at the weekend insisting than "an eleventh series will happen" and that it will be "sometime in 2014".
Llewellyn has since removed the post and Naylor played down suggestions that series 11 was definitely happening.

Red Dwarf is coming back to Dave for an eleventh series, though we don't know when, says Robert Llewellyn's blog...
To address fan questions about the possibility of more Red Dwarf after last autumn's successful tenth run, Robert Llewellyn (the actor inside Kryten's prosthetics) has written a blog post to clear a few things up.
First comes the very good news that yes, "We are officially making another series". There's lovely.
When might we be able to see the new episodes? Er, pass. "It will be sometime in 2014," Llewellyn writes, "but I can't be any more accurate than that because we simply don't know yet."
"As far as the main cast are concerned, Chris, Danny, Craig and myself are all very committed to making another series, Doug Naylor is working on it like a man posessed but beyond that it's in the lap of the Gelfs.

With Being Human gone, Misfits bowing out, and a year to wait for Doctor Who series 8, Rob helps us navigate the UK geek TV drought...
Shift your brain gears into fifth for a moment - 'no that's reverse, no, just, okay, yes, up and to the right...right, Right! Oh here let me...' - and imagine that all the British-made sci-fi/fantasy shows from the past eight years are water. Lovely refreshing water. You've drunk it, haven't you? All that liquid geeky goodness that's been splooshing through your telly pipes and quenching your thirst for enjoyable quality cult TV. 'Slurp slurp slurp'. Delicious.
Sometime's the water's cool, like a bow tie or a super power, and sometime's the water's hot, like the torso of a vampire in Barry Island or a distinctly Abercrombie & Fitch knight of King Arthur's catalogue. All that fantastic hot and cold water,...

With the exception of the classic seminal Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, funny science-fiction shows are in short supply. So much so, in fact, that I believe Red Dwarf may be the only one around — who mentioned Hyperspace? Get the hell out of here! The thing about it is that it doesn’t just lampoon science-fiction: that would be easy enough to do, as films like Spaceballs and Galaxy Quest, and even the Robot Chicken Star Wars have shown us. But it’s a lot harder to be properly respectful to the thing you’re putting a humorous slant on, and to understand and embrace it, than it is just to basically make a laugh out of it. And Red Dwarf has I believe managed to straddle the border between serious or at least semi-serious sci-fi and comedy, without totally sliding over onto either side.
Now you might say that’s wrong,...
