Annecy, France — France’s Annecy Festival, the world’s biggest animation meet, opens its doors June 11. Here are 12 takes on this year’s edition, and the state of the animation business:
1.Annecy Breaks Attendance Records, Again
This will be the largest Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival ever. One week out, accreditations for its Intl. Animation Film Market (Mifa) were tracking 16% up vs. 2017, at 3,500. That’s the biggest attendance, and the biggest’s growth in attendance, on record, said Mifa head Mikaël Marin. Total Annecy attendance – festival guests, students and Mifa participants – was 10% up on last year’s 10,000, another historical record. Quaint, fairy-tale-like town it may be. But in numbers, Annecy is not much smaller than, say, MipTV, thanks of course to a much larger festival.
2. Animation Biz Drivers
So what else is new? Annecy has grown every single year since at least the turn of the decade, said Marin. Various...

Recently, Netflix has seen a push to expand their anime collection, especially when it comes to their original content; and rumor has it that Netflix is set to add 30 new animes in 2018 alon! The latest one to hit the streaming giant is B: The Beginning…
B: The Beginning takes place in the kingdom where there have been a string of murders happening in this city and it’s up to the Ris (Royal Investigation Service) to find the murderer who goes by the initial B. As always, there is more to the story and each episode that passes adds to the mystery.
The aspect that will divide audiences the most is the way that B: The Beginning tells its story. For much of its run, it feels like there are two separate plots. One being the police procedural side with...

Netflix has teamed up with the animation studio who brought us Attack on Titan and Ghost in the Shell, Production I.G., to develop an original anime series called Perfect Bones.
The 12-episode series is being directed by Kazuto Nakazawa. According to the press release, the story is "set in the future where scientists have tried to create the ‘perfect human’ in hopes of keeping peace in the universe. After nearly achieving their goal through several children, the scientists send their ‘new humans’ for further training where they are kidnapped by an evil organization set on using their powers to implement their own concept of a new world order.”
That definitely sounds like a great concept for an anime series, and I'm completely on board with it. This has the makings of something awesomely epic. Erik Barmack, vice president, international originals, said in a statement:

Does the just-premiered clip rank in our list of top-five LP videos?

Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit"
Photo: Warner Bros.
At 12:01 a.m. on Thursday (August 26), Linkin Park premiered their brand-new video for "The Catalyst," the first single off their upcoming A Thousand Suns album. It's a dark, moody, abstract affair, full of swirling smoke, charred earth and rising tides, and, judging from the comments we got on MTVNews.com, Linkin Park fans totally love it. So that got us thinking: Is it good enough to rank among their all-time best videos?
Even though "The Catalyst" is barely 13 hours old at this point, it's clear the clip takes the band to places they've never gone before. But the short answer is ... no, not just yet. Sure, the video would probably land in the LP top 10, but we're talking about the best of the best here.

Fantasia [1] is one of the largest (if not the largest) genre film festival in North America. It takes place every summer in Montreal, Canada, and features all kinds of horror, sci-fi, and action films from all over the world, often with an emphasis on Asian cinema. This year is no different, with two of the biggest films being Takashi Miikie's Yatterman and Chan-wook Park's Thirst. Other fairly high profile selections include Michael Dougherty's long-delayed Trick'r'Treat, Uwe Boll's Stoic and Jaume Collet-Serra's Orphan. This year's festival takes place between July 9th and 29th. The full program schedule will be available online by the end of the week. Check out an extensive list of titles playing after the jump. Yatterman (Dir. Takashi Miike) The Eclipse (Dir. David Morley) Possibility of An Island (Dir. Michel Houellebecq) Thirst (Dir. Chan-wook Park) Trick'r'Treat (Dir. Michael Dougherty) Neighbor (Dir. Just when you thought there was never enough Samurai animations in the world Ghost in the Shell’s lord and master Mamoru Oshii is developing a animated samurai film for Japanese animation powerhouse Production I.G.
This new film, slated for a Summer 2009 bow, will be based on the life of Japan’s most celebrated Samuarai, Musashi Miyamoto. This new film will be called Miyamoto Musashi: Sōken ni Haseru Yume (Musashi Miyamoto: The Dream of Riding with Two Swords). Musashi created and perfected a two-sword kenjutsu technique called niten’ichi ("two heavens as one") or nitōichi ("two swords as one"). He was also the author of The Book of Five Rings, a book that is still studied today. Word is it rivals Sun Tzu’s Art of War in regards to strategy and tactics.
Should be interesting. Oshii is gathering quite the talent together for this project. Mizuho Nishikubo, an...
