In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

A clash between titans will be coming to an exhibition hall in Japan this Summer. Studio Trigger announced today that the classic anime series Gurren Lagann will be taking on the more modern anime classic Kill la Kill , which were both directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima, in an exhibition for the ages. To go along with the announcement of the exhibition titled “ Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann vs. Kill la Kill Exhibition ,” a new poster was designed by animator Sushio. Related: The First Take Soars With Shoko Nakagawa Performing ‘Sorairo Days’ The “ Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann vs. Kill la Kill Exhibition ” will be happening this summer, though details on where, when or how have yet to be confirmed. One of the more exciting animated projects set to debut on Netflix this year is "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners." Based on the highly promoted (and barely finished) video game, the series was pitched as a new production by the famous Studio Trigger. Bombastic action specialist Hiroyuki Imaishi is directing, wunderkind animator Yoh Yoshinari is contributing character designs, and much of the studio's creative brain trust is on board. Not to mention some first-time collaborators, like "Silent Hill" composer Akira Yamaoka. Imaishi is a wild card; he's best known today for his collaborations with the scriptwriter Kazuki Nakashima, but his early works like "Dead...

The truth remains that whatever one talks about regarding the anime industry this year, the success of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie” overshadows everything in the category. However, the year was once more quite good for the industry, at least content-wise, with a number of titles that are bound to make an impact in the future coming to the fore. A number of new trends also appeared, with two titles that focus on the humanization of animals, a number of ones that presented a distinctly European setting, and a number of series that were original, not based on manga that is. Lastly, Masaaki Yuasa proved, once more, that he is on the very top of anime directors.

A rarity for the anime world, “Bna” is not based on a manga but is actually an original series produced by Studio Trigger. With a style that reminds of Science Saru and with a context that includes an impressive metaphor on refugees, this is one of the best of the year.
Set in a world where humanoid animals (known as beastmen) and humans both co-exist and inhabit Earth, the series centers on Michiru Kagemori, a young teenage girl who one day suddenly starts turning into a tanuki beastman. Running away, she seeks refuge in Anima City, a city built for beastmen to be able to live peacefully as themselves, and ends up meeting a wolf beastman named Shirou Ogami. Together, they investigate how and why Michiru became a beastman, becoming mixed up in even stranger events in the process

The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

The first of the three masterful collaborations the duo of Hiroyuki Imaishi as director and veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima as script-writer gave us (“Kill la Kill” and “Promare” are the other two) was a truly game-changing title, which reinvigorated the rather preterit at the time mecha genre in ways no one could have imagined.
The main story, which is not based on a manga in another unique aspect of the title, takes place in a fictional future where Earth has become an almost complete dystopia, ruled by the Spiral King, Lord Genome, who has forced mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages for generations. To achieve that, apart from spreading lies about the surface of the earth being extremely dangerous, he also uses his beast men, who, using mechas, terrorize anyone who dares actually leave the underground villages. Two teenagers, however, Kamina, who once saw the sky with his father,...

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

All cinema is wonderful, but there’s a certain wonder that’s only possible through animation. We have almost grown numb to how realistic computer-graphic animation has advanced, but there are few things akin to the experience of being transported to a dreamworld that lets its colors wash over and swallow you whole. Similarly, anime has reached some staggering heights of what’s possible through traditional animation, and in many ways Promare sets a new standard in that area, delivering visuals that will be discussed for years and strive to be matched and surpassed. It’s a gorgeous, fun fever dream of a movie that captures the exact spirit of what makes anime so magical and powerful.

Injecting an intoxicating shot of frantic energy and sleek color directly into your pupils, the postapocalyptic sci-fi action saga “Promare” plays like an anime-induced euphoric trip.
Marking the first feature release for both Japanese outfit Studio Trigger and its co-founder and director Hiroyuki Imaishi, this visual potion spiced with fiery duels and supernatural machinery is at its most potent when taken without much concern for its bewildering mechanics.
Imaishi is best known for fan-favorite shows “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann,” works that feature campy erotic innuendos mostly missing from “Promare.” And he carries over the vividly graphic style of animation and fast-paced editing from those episodic hits into his theatrical debut, based on a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kazuki Nakashima (“Batman Ninja”).

In the 1950s, Batman was transformed into a variety of beings or wore a colorful assortment of costumes to goose sales. Thankfully, that silliness was retired with the New Look and wasn’t resurrected until the Elseworlds what if stories of the 1990s. That same approach has now crept from the page to the screen with Batman Ninja, out now on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment.
This anime-style adventure comes from director Junpei Mizusaki, (producer of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), working from a script by Kazuki Nakashima and character designs from Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai). As a result, it comes with a strong pedigree for the creative approach.

There have been many, many Batman movies over the years – from the 60s movie, to Tim Burton’s 90s reimagining, to the Lego Batman Movie (including the Justice League Dtv Lego movies too) and Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. But, and despite a number of animated Batman movies, there has never been an anime movie featuring DC Comics’ legendary character.
Until now.
The latest animated movie released by DC and Warner Bros., Batman Ninja is the creative result of a trio of animefilmmakers – director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), writer Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) – coming together to produce an original movie in collaboration with Warner Bros. We’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably – in our opinion, at least – Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but we also enjoyed Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, which featured Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, naturally, we’re over the moon with excitement for Batman Ninja.
First announced at the New York Comic-Con last year, the film is the brainchild of DC and a number of anime and manga superstars. Namely, Junpei Mizusaki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Takashi Okazashi (Afro Samurai), and Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann). I'm pretty excited about seeing this upcoming Batman Ninja anime. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just released a new English trailer for it and as you'll see it's wildly action-packed! This looks absolutely crazy and I hope the film as a whole turns out great. One thing I do love about what I'm seeing is the animation style and character designs. It looks like beautiful work.

While the geek world continues to argue amongst themselves about Justice League, DC quietly just dropped a trailer for what looks to be their most exciting animated feature to date. Batman Ninja, which is a rare anime-style feature from the company, shows Bruce Wayne thrust from modern times into Medieval Japan where some friends are already waiting for him. I'm not exactly sure why Batman is the last to arrive (especially considering every past Robin and Red Hood is there), but I was all in the moment when I saw Edo Joker in action!
The film was developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas).
Check out the first trailer, complete with subtitles, and tell me this isn't something you're interested in seeing in 2018.

Last week we learned that there was a Batman anime film in development called Batman Ninja. The film is being developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas). They all appeared at a panel at Nycc this past weekend to talk about the movie.
They explained that Batman Ninja will feature several heroes and villains that will be traveling through time to battle. The story will be set in Japan and it will range from the middle ages to the modern day. Cbm explains:
The creators have all discussed how they wanted to have a balance of eastern and western sensibilities and that by having Batman serve as the western, the eastern would flow naturally into his surroundings. They strived to keep the personalities of each...

One reason why the character of Batman has endured for 78 years is that he’s so malleable. Sure, there are intrinsic qualities that unite various interpretations such as his superior intellect, martial arts skills and care for his fellow man, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been portrayals on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, both Adam West and Ben Affleck have brought something very different to the table, but neither man’s efforts were no less valid than the other – and the same sentiment can be extended to comics and animation.
Having said that, the time has come to embrace what the near future will bring. As it turns out, the Caped Crusader will once again venture to the Japanese anime arena, this time with Batman Ninja. And no, it probably has nothing to do with the Dark Knight and dozens of other gifted athletes from...

It’s the tail end of the twenty-first century and Earth has nearly overstayed its welcome with dwindling resources and over-population. Scientists believe they can release the CO2 pockets underneath Mars’ surface and move the Red Planet from -50 degrees Celsius into a human-friendly temperature and atmosphere. So mankind sends rockets of moss and cockroaches to commence the process, a half-century passing before a team of colonists can finally journey forth. Everything should be ready for this hand-selected group under Ko Honda’s (Shun Oguri) supervision: go to Mars, kill the cockroaches, and return home with stories of our salvation via a new frontier. It sounds so simple and yet no one is prepared for what they’ll find because no one but Honda and the Japanese government know the truth.
That itself is a wild premise ripe for science fiction fun, but manga creators Yû Sasuga and Kenichi Tachibana are hardly finished.

Japan’s Village Inc. is launching sales on samurais-battling-demons story Asura and avenging samurai love story Midare Uguisu at Filmart.

Terra Formars
Director: Takashi Miike
Writer: Kazuki Nakashima
Given his mindboggling output, it would be strange not to have a most anticipated list not featuring Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, who usually has several projects premiering during any given year. As far as we can tell, he only has one title scheduled for release in 2016, the intriguing Terra Formers, a live action manga adaptation which sounds an awful lot like Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997). Humans deposit some moss and cockroaches on Mars in hopes of fostering an inhabitale environment for later use on the Red Planet. In the year 2599, they return to find a species of dangerous humanoid cockroaches. The production is the first Japanese film to shoot in Iceland. A cast headlined by Rinko Kikuchi (Babel; Pacific Rim) has us even more excited for what sounds like one of Miike’s most extravagantly gonzo creations yet.

Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike has quickly become one of the more recognised names among genre fans around the world, with films such as Audition, Ichi the Killer, and Sukiyaki Western Django only some of the features he’s known for in his extensive filmography. While his last feature, Yakuza Apocalypse, made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Miike is already in the midst of production on his next film.
Titled Terra Formars, Miike takes solely on directing duties this time around, working from a screenplay by Kazuki Nakashima. The film itself is an adaptation of a manga by Ken’ichi Tachibana and Yû Sasuga, and stars Pacific Rim‘s Rinko Kikuchi and Arrow‘s Rila Fukushima alongside 13 Assassins‘ Takayuki Yamada and Emi Takei. While festival premiere dates or theatrical release dates have yet to be announced, the first trailer for the film has already been released. The trailer can be seen below.

Japanese Anime Kill La Kill kicked into a whole new gear in 2014. We salute a daring, daft series available now on Netflix...
Kill La Kill. Regardless of what it means - allegedly it’s a series of Japanese double-entendres - that title is a bomb-blast: two kills and a dose of French sophistication for good measure. It's a violently amusing name for the anime series, promising claret by the bucketload, a ticking brain (or just the right amount of snark) and the everlasting appeal of total nonsense. Logic may apply, be it worldly or otherwise, but you're already set for the rules to be broken.
Despite airing its first half of episodes last year, Klk kicked into a whole other gear in 2014, garnering a large international following as it barrelled towards its March finale. The entire series is currently bubbling away on Netflix for immediate watching, and it is something...
