UCLA broadcaster Chris Roberts, who called the football and men’s basketball play-by-play for 23 seasons before retiring, died May 12 at his Glendora, Calif., home at age 74. He had complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to the university.
Roberts began calling games in the fall of 1992 through the spring of 2015, in the process setting a local record for calling NCAA Division I games on Los Angeles radio. His final season with the Bruins was in 2014-15, when Roberts equaled Fred Hessler’s record for the longest tenured play-by-play broadcaster in UCLA history.
Roberts called 16 bowl games, including the Bruins’ Rose Bowl appearances on January 1, 1994 and January 1, 1999. Roberts also broadcast the men’s basketball team for 19 trips to the NCAA Tournament. That included the 1995 NCAA Tournament Championship.

Morgantown, W.Va. — MTV said Wednesday it is canceling its West Virginia-based reality TV show "Buckwild" a week after the accidental death of 21-year-old star Shain Gandee.
Network spokesman Jake Urbanski confirmed the news, saying it was "not an easy decision."
"But given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him," the network said. "Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately."
On Sunday, MTV will air a special, "Buckwild: Wv to the NYC," which was shot before second-season filming had begun. The network said Shain's parents, Dale and Loretta Gandee, support the move.
Gandee and two others were found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning on April 1. Gandee's SUV was stuck in a mud pit near his home in Sissonville, its tail pipe submerged. That could have...

Charleston, W.Va. — As hundreds of tearful friends and fans filed past two closed coffins Sunday, a slideshow of family photos showed the simple country life that "Buckwild" reality TV star Shain Gandee lived long before the cameras started rolling.
Set to country music were snapshots of the 21-year-old before his 15 minutes of televised fame: as a uniformed pee wee football player, in a tuxedo for prom, graduating from high school, kissing a bride and holding babies. In some, he wore hunting camouflage, holding a slain buck by its antlers and displaying a batch of gray squirrels.
Gandee, his 48-year-old uncle, David Gandee, and 27-year-old friend Donald Robert Myers were found dead April 1 in a sport utility vehicle that was partially submerged in a deep mud pit near Sissonville. They had been missing after being seen leaving a bar at 3 a.m.
