‘Music School’ is a slice of life drama revolving around a theatre teacher and music teacher, trying to put together a stage musical based on ‘The Sound of Music’, helmed by former Ias officer and National Award-winning filmmaker Papa Rao Biyyala, marking his full-length feature directorial debut.
The movie opens with a theatre teacher struggling to make his presence count, while other streams take up all the space, students and credit.
Painting, music, theatre, poetry, and such soulful and nourishing creative streams are often sidelined as there is unprecedented academic pressure on students to score good grades, and find a place in reputed professional colleges. But nourishment of the soul is most important; there is nothing worse than the broken spirit of a child.
Shriya Saran (Maria), a music teacher from Goa, joins the school, only to face the same disdain and struggle that Sharman Joshi’s character (drama teacher Manoj) has to contend with.

You may argue that the series that heralded Madhuri Dixit Nene in the Ott space frittered away its potential at the end but a second season may just redeem it. Yet, for the most part, this show was a perfect blend of drama, emotional heft, mystery, psychological layers, and histrionics with Dixit demonstrating why she is still considered one of the best actors to grace the silver screen. This is a movie that was not originally planned as a comedy and went on to win Indian National award for the best Feature film, Director and Actor for the year. “Bhuvan Shome” was released in 1969 and is widely credited as to have pioneered Indian Cinema’s new wave and is a confident endeavour at many levels.
It starts with depictions of the legends of Bengal (including Satyajit Ray) and makes one think of how fortunate the language, culture and art scene of the land had been and still is. You are sure in the least to envy those who call this part of India home.
The great auteur Mrinal Sen allows the script to grow organically, developing funny bones in the process untill a wholesome body of art emerges. And in his own words, it is also a rare commercial success.

Ananth Mahadevan’s upcoming film Rough Book, which takes a hard look at the education system, may be in the news for having nailed several issues through an entertaining film. But what’s also creating a buzz is the film’s unique casting. The film that has got a thumbs-up at various film festivals internationally boasts a rather quaint ensemble cast. So, while on one hand, there is the talented dynamo Tannishtha Chatterjee and many theatre seniors including Kaizad Kotwal, Suhasini Mulay, Vinay Jain, Joy Sengupta, on the other hand all the students are actually first-time actors, except the protagonist, Amaan F Khan, who is one-film-old.
Talking about it, Mahadevan points out that the contrast itself made it a very interesting concept. He elaborates, “It was not a conscious decision to make it a senior versus junior kind of a thing, but I was sure that I wanted certain raw...

Director: Nila Madhab Panda, Writer: Deepak Venkateshan, Actors: Lehar Khan, Krishang Trivedi, Harsh Mayar, Parvin Dabas etc.
Nila Madhab Panda deserves accolades for presenting an issue-based film in an entertaining and gripping manner. Jalpari, based on the issue of female foeticide, maintains a fine balance and never goes overboard preaching the cause. In fact, it weaves it cleverly into an adventure thriller which successfully drives the message home and is palatable to children and adults alike.
Shreya Singh is the tomboyish protagonist of the film who is brave, imaginative and adventurous. She goes on a holiday to her ancestral village with her father, grandmother and younger brother. Shreya, after performing a mermaid dance in school, is on a quest for a pond in the village where she can swim like a mermaid. But her ancestral village is one marred with severe scarcity: of water and women. Sources of water have...

In spite of its flaws, of which there are many, "Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid" wins your heart with its simple fluid storytelling and characters who seem to have taken birth in the deserted village in Haryana, long before the camera was switched on.
There is a fascinating play of light and shade in Deepak Venkateshan's screenplay. It.

Ten million female fetuses are estimated to have been aborted over the past two decades in India according to ActionAid. 35 million females are also ‘missing’ according to the 2001 National Indian Census. Female feticide is an urgent and prevalent issue, and this horror does not only apply to India. Oxford University research based on birth statistics revealed that 1500 females from England and Wales have gone ‘missing’ since 1990. Sons being valued higher than daughters seem to have become ‘the norm’ in Indian Society. Whilst some parents feel their daughters to be the ‘Laxmi’ (Goddess) of the house, others are repulsed by them. The expense of paying a dowry, the responsibility of family honour resting upon a daughter, as well as daughter’s being viewed as ‘parahi’ (belonging to her husband’s family) are some factors that encourage the murdering of an unborn female child.
This shocking issue of female feticide is addressed...
