Deftones took the stage at Coachella on Friday night, delivering a ferocious 12-song set that included a cover of The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want.”
During their set, Deftones also performed “Combat,” from 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist, for only the second time ever. They also ran through “Feiticeira,” “Digital Bath,” “Ohms,” “Change (In the House of Flies),” and “My Own Summer (Shove It).” Watch video of Deftones’ Coachella performance and see the full setlist below.
Perhaps even more exciting, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno confirmed in a backstage interview that the group is nearing completion of their next album. As Moreno explained to Kroq, all of the music for the album is recorded and he just needs to finish up the vocals. “We want it to be great. I think that’s most important. Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and his wife Risa have taken in a rescue dog that was nearly euthanized.
Scarlett, a pug, suffered a severe anal prolapse and was advised to be euthanized by a veterinarian. However, Scarlett was rescued by the The Pug Queen Foundation of Los Angeles, and she underwent surgery before being fostered and later finding a forever home with the Morenos.
Scarlett will join the couple’s other pups, Tito and Sasha, in their home in Portland, Oregon, after Chino picked her up in L.A. while on tour with Crosses. The Pug Queen, who helped initially rescue Scarlett, shared a photo of Chino, Risa, and Scarlett on Instagram, along with the heartwarming tale of how the pug survived and found her new home:
“This little girl was dropped off at a shelter with a severe anal prolapse after a vet told her owners to euthanize her.

Drumeo’s “For the First Time” video series puts professional drummers on the spot, forcing them to improvise over notable songs they’ve never heard before. The latest “First Time” clip from the instructional platform sees longtime Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto in front of the cameras.
As we saw in a previous clips featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith challenged to play a Thirty Seconds to Mars song and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy getting pitted against a Nickelback tune, the Drumeo engineers revel in finding a song that’s both new and challenging to the drummer. In the case of the 73-year-old DeVitto, he was presented with Deftones‘ “My Own Summer (Shove It).”
Initially, DeVitto begins taking notes as he hears a drumless version of the iconic Around the Fur opener. But when the chorus hits and Chino Moreno’s screams come in, DeVitto drops his pen...

Health have shared a cover of Deftones’ “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” via the Spotify Singles series.
One of Deftones’ earliest hits, “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” is re-imagined as a synthpop song by Health. Jake Duzsik’s falsetto hits the same melodic heights as Chino Moreno on the original, and the synth treatment fits the song perfectly, adding a nocturnal ambience to the Around the Fur highlight.
While the cover is only available on Spotify, it does arrive just days before the physical release of Health’s latest album Rat Wars on vinyl, CD, and cassette this Friday (February 16th). The band offered up the album on streaming platforms back in December in a somewhat unconventional, late-year drop, sneaking into our list of the best underground heavy albums of 2023.

Deftones‘ latest studio album, Ohms, dropped in 2020, but it appears the guys are well into the writing phase for their next LP. Speaking on the Gnostic Academy podcast, guitarist Stephen Carpenter said the band is working with producer Nick Raskulinecz on a new album, and they’re eyeing a 2024 release.
“Just in the last couple of months, really — two or three months; well, maybe a little longer now, really; February is when we started … to work on new material for a new record,” Carpenter told Gnostic Academy (as transcribed by Blabbermouth.net). “It’s going good now. It was a little slow at first, but it always is; dragging our feet ain’t nothing new. But we’ve got stuff up and going now, and we’re on a good little momentum at the moment. And we hope to have it all done and out by next spring [or] summer. There...

Two previously unreleased tracks from the supergroup Palms, featuring Deftones singer Chino Moreno and members of the defunct post-metal band Isis, have been unearthed.
The songs have been combined under the title “Opening Titles / End Credits” and have been released via Ipecac Recordings. Likely hailing from the sessions that yielded Palms’ sole self-titled LP in 2013, the 10-minute piece serves as a reminder of the gorgeous post-metal music that the Moreno-fronted project produced.
The singer is backed by core instrumentalists in Isis: bassist Jeff Caxide, drummer Aaron Harris and guitarist Bryant Clifford Meyer. As opposed to the more sludgy/metallic nature of that band and Deftones’ harsher tendencies, Palms falls more into the shoegazey dream-pop camp, with Moreno’s soaring vocals bedded by lush guitar lines and tidal crescendos.
Ipecac releasing previously unheard Palms material might be a one-off, though the move could also hint at a possible reissue of their self-titled album.

Vowws, the Los Angeles-based Australian duo heavily inspired by Quentin Tarantino and horror movie scores, has been dropping single after single as they tour alongside Deftones.
While the new album isn’t due until March, they’re offering up another taste of what’s to come with the chilling ballad, “Wait”, featuring the forever haunting Chelsea Wolfe.
Written during the height of pandemic isolation, dealing with the sadness of watching humanity turn on itself – it is a love song, a desperate call to no one, and a melancholic reflection on a time that has seemingly disappeared as we rush to forget what we may never understand.
“This is the most direct, honest song we’ve written,” the band explained. “It wasn’t meant to be a Vowws song originally, it was just an expression of feeling during a difficult time. But it took on a life of its own, especially...

Smashing Pumpkins celebrated their 30th anniversary Thursday with a guest-filled concert that featured Courtney Love joining the band onstage for four songs.

Jerry Cantrell and Batman collide for the new song “Setting Sun.” It’s the Alice in Chains guitarist’s contribution to a series of tracks inspired by the DC Comics graphic novel Dark Nights: Metal: Deluxe Edition.
Cantrell recorded the pounding track with producer Mike Elizondo and film composer and Marilyn Manson collaborator Tyler Bates.
“All you were is wiped away / All your love has died today / Run, you are a setting sun,” Cantrell sings on the grim solo track that would sit comfortably alongside his Alice in Chains output.

There’s dedication, and then there’s break-your-foot-in-the-middle-of-a-concert-and-keep-on-singing dedication, which is what Deftones frontman Chino Moreno displayed during a recent gig in Belgium. Performing at Belgium’s Groezrock festival, Moreno climbed onto a monitor and leaped off, reports NME, taking a rough landing that resulted in a fractured foot. As the band continued to rage on, Moreno finally emerged and […]...

While the term “witch house” is still tossed around casually as a musical style, enough recurring motifs have been created by artists operating beneath that vague umbrella to qualify it as a subgenre unto itself: occult and horror-oriented themes; minimalist song structures and dark, enveloping soundscapes (often including glitched-up samples and ambient noise) woven densely around hip-hop, industrial and synthpop rhythms; and band names which often contain Unicode or other non-standard characters that make them difficult to track down with a simple name-only search, further solidifying their underground status. Several talented musicians have found a successful niche within those rather loose boundaries, and we've featured some of the best artists in the field, including ∆Aimon and Mater Suspiria Vision, but I must confess I've been waiting most anxiously for the arrival of the first full-length record from the L.A. outfit Crosses (†††) – an eerie, sensual and highly experimental side project...

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has died. He was 42 and had been in a semi-conscious state since a 2008 car accident. Cheng co-founded the band with Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, and Abe Cunningham in the late 1980s, performing on the band’s first five albums—three of which went platinum. He won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance with the group in 2001 for “Elite,” from the record White Pony. Deftones’ debut, 1995’s Adrenaline, wasn’t an initial success, but after the group did some extensive touring, it ultimately ended up spending 21 weeks on the Billboard Heatseekers chart ...

How tragic. Longtime bassist of the alternative metal band Deftones finally succumbed to a car injury that had left him in a partially conscious state since 2008. He was 42 years old.
Chi Cheng, bassist of the popular alt-metal group Deftones, was rushed to the hospital early on the morning of Apr. 13, but doctors were unable to save him — he passed away at the age of 42 at about 3 Am.

Los Angeles – Few rock bands that emerged during the '90s nu-metal phase still exist today and practically none have the amount of respect and admiration the Deftones receive from their musical peers. Countless bands cite the Sacramento-based group as a big influence on their music.

First things first. This list hasn’t been compiled as some comparative list of the greatest singers and front men that I, you or anyone will ever come across. No, far from it. Far from, even, a list of my favourite singers and front men. Nor is it an accurate representation of my musical taste. I have loved and worshipped at the altar of other singers, front men, bands and artists more at any given moment, as my fleeting attention span allows, be it for their technical prowess, their performance or their myth; I’m a sucker for a tortured artist.
No, what we have here is a list to make you think and reminisce; harking back to those long forgotten days of yore, of childhood. So without further ado, and our taking-ourselves-seriously-hats left reassuringly at the door, here then, is my list of Top Ten Singers I Pretended To...

The second in six months; second in a planned series of several and already there’s progressive development in sound and standard. This is the sequel to Ep† by the collective ††† (Crosses). A trio that may be two thirds better known as Chino Moreno of Deftones, and Shaun Lopez of influential post-hardcore/alt rock band Far.
This fairly under the radar side-project, given the personnel at work here, came to light last year with the release of their first Ep in August. Moreno and Lopez, childhood friends and neighbours, joined by Scott Chuck, threw themselves into this project; jamming and recording for several hours every day, with the end result being enough songs for a series of self released EPs.

Pomona, California - Before Crosses took the stage at Pomona’s famous Glass House music venue – the air was already thick with anticipation and the crowd’s energy was wildly high well before the show even began. As the six band members slowly crept onstage with three illuminated Crosses as their backdrop, Chino Moreno, lead singer of the Deftones, grabbed the mic – rockin’ a black leather jacket with hood draped – the crowed went hysterical. (At this point, Moreno is essentially a legend in the California music scene and very well-respected by his musical peers).
The crowd certainly wasn't complaining when the band kicked things off with the subdued, dreamy “Thholyghost.” Fans hung on Moreno's every word – singing along with him (something that continued for the majority of the show). Next up was “This Is A Trick,” which is without a doubt one of Crosses strongest songs. Moreno...

We’ve been keeping our eyes on Crosses – the newest side project of Deftones’ Chino Moreno, also featuring Shaun Lopez of ‘90’s alt-group Far and bassist Chuck Doom. The band is a unique departure from Moreno’s other material – sounding like a “dubby” Depeche Mode with occasional sudden shots of testosterone.
We caught up with Lopez just hours before the band’s live debut (the first of a string of only four California shows) to hear his thoughts on the band’s release methodology, how he gathered his group of musicians and what the future holds for the group.
MTV News: When you guys first came on the scene last year, you seemed hesitant to say you’d be doing any touring. So how did these shows come about?
Shaun Lopez: Just sort of made sense. You know, Chino [Moreno] had some time off – just seemed like the timing was right.

Deftones have always had a flare for melodrama, which is part of the reason I've love them, will defend "White Pony" 'til doom, what-have-you. So, as I previously reported, Deftones' Chino Moreno is lending his talents to new side project ††† -- or, for those who don't know the keyboard shortcut, Crosses -- formed with guitarist Shaun Lopez. And now there's another song to show for the pairing. “Prurien†” very well could be a Killers song, with Brandon Flowers off gambling somewhere. A good one. It pulses with a thousand (sampled) voices rising. Appropriate, as he sings: "They got you so...
