This docu series from HBO "captures how an underdog record label launched a movement and superstar musicians like Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding." The Memphis soul sound that electrified the world... In 1960s Memphis, an audacious set of interracial collaborators dared to make their own music on their own terms, forming Stax Records, one of America's most influential creators of Black music. At the peak of its success, Stax artists commemorated the Watts Rebellion by playing to over 100,000 African Americans at the 1972 benefit concert Wattstax. During an era of major social turbulence, systemic inequity, racial tensions, Stax saw stunning artistic & cultural success, and managed to rebound from repeated business setbacks & losses before the studio ultimately dissolved after 15 pioneering years. Springsteen became a well known rocker in the early ’70s, but it wasn’t until 1975’s Born to Run that he became a household name. His success continued with The River, Nebraska, and the record-breaking Born in the U.S.A.
His music is known for its blue collar influences and classic rock sound, but when it comes to musical influences, Springsteen looked to a very different type of artist. During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he shared his thoughts on Moore and how...

It’s been a decade of reminiscence and reflection for Bruce Springsteen. He’s revisited classic albums on tour, retold his life story on the page and Broadway stage, and written songs about late childhood friends. Even when he released 2020’s Letter to You, his first proper E Street Band record in years, he used some of his earliest Seventies songs as source material.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which emanates from Grand Rapids, Michigan – which means this was taped at the same time as this past weekend’s Battle of the Belts special. We’ve got Taz and Excalibur on commentary as usual so let’s get to the action!
Match #1: Private Party, The Butcher & The Blade def. Isaiah Broner, James Alexander, Brayden Lee, & Sam Moore
My Thoughts: So we open Dark with an 8-man quasi-squash match. Hey, at least Private Party, The Butcher & The Blade are getting “TV” time right? Right..? It seems both teams are floundering somewhat after the end of the Hfo/Ahfo so to see them in action is good, even more so when the in-ring action is good too!
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Anna Jay A.S. def. Megan Meyers

How the 1940s standard “Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe” failed to be adapted into a Joe Biden campaign song until now is a mystery, but Cher recognized the obvious pairing of classic song and candidate and has recorded her rewrite of the tune, which was originally sung by Ethel Waters in the 1943 film “Cabin in the Sky.”
The song, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, was nominated for an Oscar after Waters sang it in the Black-themed Vincente Minnelli film. Many of the original lyrics would not do — Waters refers to “little Joe” in the film version, which sounds more like a nickname Donald Trump would apply to the candidate than something they’d want in a campaign anthem. So that reference gets changed to “president Joe” in Cher’s version, among other alterations.

Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry member and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels passed away this morning, Monday, July 6th at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee.
Doctors determined the cause of death was a hemorrhagic stroke. Daniels was 83.
Charlie Daniels was a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to Southern rock and bluegrass in addition to country. From his Dove Award-winning gospel albums to his genre-defining southern rock anthems and his Cma Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. For generations of aspiring musicians from the Deep South, country music and R&b are inextricably linked. That was part of the inspiration for a unique blending of performers from both genres for a duets album and corresponding PBS TV special in March of 1994. Rhythm, Country and Blues, released on the McA Nashville label, featured combinations of like-minded artists, one from country and one from R&b, interpreting songs from both genres.

Clint Eastwood’s daughter Alison Eastwood was done with acting after appearing in 2014’s “Finding Harmony.”
Or so she thought.
It was a Friday night and she and her husband were heading to dinner when her father’s producer Sam Moore called. “He [says], ‘You know, your dad wants you to do this film,” Alison recalls. “I almost threw up. [My husband] was like, ’Is everything Ok? Did somebody die?’ I’m like, ‘No, I just don’t feel very well.’ I retired from acting and I sort of threw in the towel and decided to focus on a lot of different things so I thought, why does he want me?”
The movie is the upcoming “The Mule,” which Clint Eastwood directed and stars in. Alison plays his — what else? — daughter in this true story about a 90-year-old who is caught smuggling $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel.

White, who had a Top Ten record with “Polk Salad Annie,” also saw it popularized by Elvis Presley. He was also perhaps best known as the writer of the deeply atmospheric and soulful “Rainy Night in Georgia,” a Number Four pop hit for Brook Benton in 1970 and covered by a number of...

The night before President Trump signed the Music Modernization Act, a long-awaited bill that allows artists and publishers to earn royalties on recordings made before 1972 and helps songwriters and producers get paid more efficiently in the streaming era, 100 songwriters and lobbyists gathered at City Winery in Washington, D.C., to dance and celebrate. The main topic of discussion: Who would attend the signing ceremony the following day at the White House?

Beach Boys singer Mike Love was at the White House to watch Donald Trump sign the Music Modernization Act into law, and when he stepped up to the podium he went way off topic to heap praise onto the president for his supposed effort to help Whitney Houston in her time of need.
“Thank you so much for your support of music historically,” he said. “I remember you tired your best to help get Whitney Houston in some kind of shape. I remember being at Mar-a-Lago with this guy right here.

“I’m not the first rock & roll octogenarian, am I?” jokes David Freiberg, hours before he and Jefferson Starship are set to take the stage in Carson City, Nevada.
Frieberg, who turns 80 today, is right; he’s not the only pop act still performing regularly in his eightieth year. I hear people ask, “Who’s gonna be the next queen?” Shut up! Aretha Franklin was the one. She could take a jazz song and make it Aretha. She could take blues and make it Aretha. Puccini’s aria “Nessun Dorma”: She could make it Aretha. There were only two people who could do that — her and Ray Charles.
At the Grammys in 1998, when Pavarotti had a cold and canceled, the producers had an emergency on their hands. They asked: Could she do “Nessun Dorma”? She had been studying opera and she had sung the aria two nights earlier at the MusiCares dinner. That first night, she did it in her key, with her arrangement. But when she was called to fill in for Pavarotti at the Grammys, with almost no rehearsal, she had to do it in his key, with his arrangement. She’d always been great, but...

HollywoodNews.com: Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, U2, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Sam Moore et al are all coming to DVD on September 28th from last fall’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concerts.
I’m usually pretty critical of the Rock Hall, but I’ll let that pass this time. The performances were so good, especially from the first night, that it’s worth enjoying them.
Of course I am particularly partial to Bruce Springsteen’s extended set with “Soul Man” Sam Moore, Billy Joel, John Fogerty, Tom Morello and Darlene Love, and the E Street Band. The YouTube video is attached below. And don’t miss the big finale with all those guys doing Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher.” It was the crowning moment of the two night event.

Movie producer Harvey Weinstein is confident of legal victory if singer Sam Moore goes through with his threat of a lawsuit over new movie Soul Men - because he insists the film is not based on the legendary star's life.
Soul Men stars Samuel L. Jackson and late comedian Bernie Mac as an estranged R+B duo who plot their chart comeback.
Grammy winner Moore claims the story is too similar to his own career with late musician Dave Prater when they performed as Sam + Dave.
He has been in touch with his lawyers with a view to filing suit over Soul Men, claiming it infringes trademark rights over their song Soul Man, and alleging it is defamatory.
The Weinstein Company's attorney, Bertram Fields, counters the producer has sent Moore a copy of the script to prove the huge differences in the career of Sam + Dave and the characters in the film.
But Moore is still unhappy.
In legal letters sent to The Weinstein Company, Moore says, "The film is sexist, racist and embarrassing, and that's not what Sam + Dave were about... It's so amateurish, so stupid, and I'm surprised that Samuel L. Jackson is involved in this. But when you read the script, all you see if vulgarity. Every other word is the 'N-word' or 'M-f' and it's just not right. They have bastardized my whole story."
However, Fields is sure Moore will fail in any attempt to win "significant" compensation for his allegations.
He says, "Months ago, we received Mr Moore's claim and told him he had none.
"As he could readily see from the script we sent him, Soul Men is not, in any part or respect, based on Mr Moore's life. It tells a different story about different people. If Mr Moore decides to file a lawsuit, he will lose."...
