Oh boy. I have so many questions for John Patrick Shanley. One of which is simply, why? Why was this the story you wanted to tell. Remember, Shanley has previously given us a classic romantic comedy in Moonstruck, penning that screenplay, as well as writing and directing a stirring drama in Doubt. He’s a talented man, no doubt. His return to rom coms, however, in Wild Mountain Thyme, makes his other directorial outing, Joe Versus the Volcano, seem perfectly normal by comparison. This is the weirdest film of the year, almost defying any real definition or verdict. It kind of has to be seen in order to be believed. Make of that what you will. The movie is a romantic comedy, though describing this one is going to be tough. In short, it’s a tale of Irish star-crossed lovers. Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) is a feisty snd opinionated...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and immediately became the talk of the fest after it won Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Now, A24 is set to share this moving story with the world — well, in limited release at least. The family drama opens in select theaters for an awards season qualifying run but will open wider on February 12, 2021.
Written and directed by Chung, Minari parallels his life as it tells the story of a Korean-American family that uproots from metropolitan Los Angeles to rural Arkansas to chase the American Dream. Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Yuh-Jung Youn, Noel Kate Cho and Alan Kim, the film follows the family as the dynamics change in their new household when their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother comes to live with them. Somewhere in the long list of what we can’t do during the last holidays of 2020 is spending that week or so break traveling and exploring. Perhaps the best option is vacationing virtually via our local cinema (or streaming service). How about heading to the “old country”? No, it’s not that old country, the setting of this holiday. Instead think about the holiday just a few months away: St. Patrick’s Day. This weekend’s new release is an ode to the “Emerald Isle”, although its time frame allows more rain than snow to cover those verdant green fields. It’s setting isn’t Christmas time, but rather Wild Mountain Thyme.
At its beginning, we actually go back in time to the earlier days of neighboring farm families the Reillys and the Muldoons. Patriarch Tony (Christopher Walken) Reilly’s pride and joy is his only son, ten-year-old Anthony. Ah,...

Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan have a very Irish romance in the brand new trailer for “Wild Mountain Thyme,” released on Tuesday.
Set in Ireland, the movie centers on Anthony (Dornan), who works in the fields under the constant belittling of his father (Christopher Walken), who has threatened to leave the family farm to Anthony’s American cousin Adam (Jon Hamm). A shy and worn-down Anthony doesn’t notice that Rosemary (Blunt), a childhood friend, has been attracted to him for years, despite feeling resentment for having been shamed by Anthony earlier. Caught between their families’ land dispute, sparks fly between the couple. Meanwhile, Rosemary’s mother, Aoife (Dearbhla Molloy), strives to unite the families before it is too late.
“Wild Mountain Thyme” is directed by John Patrick Shanley, and the film is adapted from his Broadway play “Outside Mullingar” from 2014. The original play starred Brian F. O’Byrne, Dearbhla Molloy,...

Emily Blunt, Jon Hamm, Christopher Walken and Dearbhla Molloy have joined the cast of John Patrick Shanley’s Wild Mountain Thyme.
They join A Private War’s Jamie Dornan in the romance feature, which is an adaptation of Shanley’s Outside Mullingar. Blunt replaces Holliday Grainger, who was originally set to star.
Anthony (Dornan) always seems to be out in the fields working, worn down by his father’s (Walken) constant belittling. But what really stings is his father’s threat to bequeath the family farm to his American cousin Adam (Hamm). Rosemary (Blunt) at first seems to hold a grudge for having been shamed by Anthony in childhood, but the sparks between them would keep a bonfire blazing through the night. Her mother Aoife (Molloy) strives to unite the families before it is too late.
Principal photography kicks off later this month in Ireland and Bleecker Street has acquired U.

When the banshees of the past come calling in Jez Butterworth’s fearsome The Ferryman, you can bet their shrieking will be blood curdling. Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall) and opening tonight on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the Olivier-award-winning play is a stunner, stitching familiar elements of Irish pastoral drama, The Troubles history and Butterworth’s magical, myth-tapping touches into something as powerful as anything on today’s stage.
If nothing else – and, believe me, there is much, much else – The Ferryman cements the playwright’s status as an unrivaled ending-writer, as this tale of a sprawling Irish family reckoning with decades, even centuries, of violence and division spirals to a conclusion that recalls, in its own way, those earth-pounding, theater-shaking footsteps of unseen Giants that closed Butterworth’s transcendent Jerusalem in 2009.
Not that you’ll want to rush a moment of the three hours and 15 minutes...

2018 Olivier Awards nominations: ‘Hamilton’ lands record 13, ‘The Ferryman’ leads among plays with 8
Two years after sweeping the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical “Hamilton” is poised to do the same at the British equivalent, the Olivier Awards. On March 6, it reaped a record 13 bids for these top theater prizes, shattering the record set by the musical “Hairspray” in 2008 and equalled by the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” last year. On the play side, the leading contender is Jez Butterworth‘s “The Ferryman,” a dark drama about the Irish troubles which is set to come to Broadway in the fall.
Winners will be announced in a ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 8 hosted by Catherine Tate. Unlike the Tony Awards, which are showcased live on CBS, the Olivier Awards get only a clips package on ITV later that evening and a live feed on BBC Radio 2.

Thanks to the first promo for Scandal Season 5, we already have a pretty good idea of what the premiere of this season will look like. However, these new photos from the Season 5 opener, titled “Heavy is the Head,” give us more insight into what Olivia will be dealing with other than her newly rekindled romance with Fitz when Scandal returns this fall. In fact, Liv will actually find herself quite busy when the Queen of Caldonia (Dearbhla Molloy) and her family arrive, as a problem in need of the crisis manager’s fixing will come with them. And judging by these photos, could Abby be providing Liv with some assistance in her resolving whatever issue arises? We’ll have to wait and see. What’s clearer than what Liv and Abby might be talking about, though, is what Fitz and Mellie are most than likely discussing in the photos below.

Coronation Street producers have been forced to recast the role of Helen Connor due to the unavailability of the original actress. Sorcha Cusack has made several appearances since 2008 as Liam (Rob James-Collier) and Michelle Connor's (Kym Marsh) mother. However due to an unavoidable clash of schedules, the 60-year-old will now be replaced by Dearbhla Molloy. Helen's screen husband Barry will be played by original actor Frank Grimes, who returned to filming with his 'new wife' on Friday. He and Molloy will appear on screen in early July. Joking on his blog last week, Grimes said: "Well it is definite now... I am going back into Coronation Street. Start filming on Friday. I am to have (more)...

Tale of 'Paycock' Doesn't Always Shine / But Crowley version of classic boasts some fine-feathered performances
By Frank Scheck
Sean O'Casey's 1924 classic about a poor Irish family caught up in the "troubles" is a notoriously difficult theatrical work to pull off, and the Roundabout's estimable but flawed revival exemplifies the hurdles. It is running indefinitely at the Gramercy Theatre in New York.
Some productions of "Juno and the Paycock" emphasize the comic aspects in the story of a family experiencing a financial windfall that is suddenly taken away from them, while others focus on the drama's political and tragic elements. Director John Crowley's rendition concentrates more on the latter, with mixed results.
Although powerfully moving at times, the production has a dissociated, removed quality that prevents it from coming fully to life. Still, the quality of the piece shines through, and several excellent performances more than make up for any deficiencies.
Set in 1922, the play deals with the travails of the Boyle family, headed by the dissolute Capt. Jack Boyle (Jim Norton), who is more interested in pursuing opportunities for drunkenness than employment. He is accompanied in these pursuits by his best friend, the equally shiftless Joxer (Thomas Jay Ryan).
The real head of the family is the matriarch, Juno (Dearbhla Molloy), who tries to keep the household running despite the lack of income. She must contend with her son, Johnny (Jason Butler Harner), who lost an arm during the civil war and who recently was shot in the hip during a riot, and her unmarried union-organizing daughter, Mary (Gretchen Cleevely), who, it turns out, is pregnant.
The Boyles' lot promises to improve with the news of a large financial inheritance, but, as with the general political situation in Ireland, their good fortune is short-lived. By the play's end, tragedy has revisited their lives. The turmoil is summed up by a famous line delivered by the captain: "The whole world's in a terrible state o' chassis."
Crowley's production begins by projecting archival film footage illustrating the turmoil of 20th-century Irish history, and it emphasizes the bleakness of the work, which is indeed considerable. But the director is less successful in capturing the comic richness that is also a large part of it. This is particularly evident in the scenes between Jack and Joxer, which never really come to life.
On the other hand, Molloy, as the aggrieved but strong-willed Juno -- she played the role in an acclaimed Donmar Warehouse production last year, also directed by Crowley -- is wonderfully moving, conveying with fierce intensity her character's indomitable spirit and love for her family.
Norton, an Irish actor seen on Broadway last season in "The Weir", is nearly as fine. But in general, the American cast members, including Ryan, are less effective.
