“America’s Next Top Model” executive producer Ken Mok and former CBS executive Scott Koondel are shopping a docu-series following eight students as they navigate the college application process.
The series will be fronted by Perry Kalmus, a high-end college admissions counselor who is behind the Akala startup venture that aims to help students from underprivileged backgrounds prepare for the admissions gauntlet at some of the nation’s top schools.
Kalmus was prominently featured in the Netflix documentary series “Operation Varsity Blues” about the real-life 2019 college admissions scandal that enveloped actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, among others.
“College Whisperer” is billed as the legit version of “Varsity Blues.” The FBI sting operation by that name netted overachieving parents who were charged with paying bribes to help get their children into top schools such as USC, Harvard and Georgetown University.

Michael Almereyda has tackled science (as a topic of either biopics or dramas) in a fascinating way in “Experimenter” and “Marjorie Prime,” and now he’s bringing that same energy to the inventor-biopic with “Tesla” (Shout Factory/IFC), a bold and audacious look at the life of Nikola Tesla. Ethan Hawke, in the title role, is evenly matched by Eve Hewson’s Anne Morgan, and they both nail Almereyda’s unique tone, which throws in anachronisms and green-screens to tell the story of someone who stretched the notions of what his peers imagined could be possible.
Also available: Madison Iseman plays a young girl with mental-health issues who can’t convince anyone she’s witnessed a crime in “Fear of Rain” (Lionsgate); 2012 indie “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” (Mvd Visual), co-starring Constance Wu and Gillian Jacobs, makes its U.S. DVD debut; Sienna Miller and Diego Luna...

You might think there’s a world of difference between producing and directing a series in the unscripted world and writing and directing a feature film, but you’d be wrong. There’s a pretty significant overlap in both genres, and the skills I learned in the former actually gave me an advantage in the latter.
I began my career in entertainment in the early 1990s as a creative exec working on television comedies and dramas, but eventually got sidetracked into the genre of unscripted entertainment. Reality TV was just beginning to surface and so I created a number of shows, including “Making the Band” and “America’s Next Top Model.” Producing these shows in that era of television was an amazing learning experience, especially in the early years.

"Who the hell are you?!" Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled The Right One, marking the feature directorial debut of acclaimed writer Ken Mok. The film itself is also about a writer. Godfrey is the story of man so traumatized and guilt ridden by a personal tragedy that he's dealt with it in a profound way: he's decided to be anyone besides himself. One day he adopts the persona of a haughty art critic, then a Poet, the next a rave DJ, a female singer, and many other witty personas. Godfrey's coping mechanism keeps him sane, but he's a man who has completely lost the idea of who he is. Enter Sara Dash, a smart, insightful writer with writer's block who struggles with her own sense of self. Intrigued by his personas, Sara tries to unravel the mystery of Godfrey, while using him to write her new novel.

Former “America’s Next Top Model” judge Jay Manuel is penning a book inspired by his time on the hit reality show, Variety has learned exclusively.
The novel, titled, “The Wig, The Bitch & The Meltdown,” published by Wordeee, will be released this on Aug. 3.
“America’s Next Top Model” has recently been in the headlines, facing criticism for out-of-touch commentary that has not aged well with viewers calling out the show for racial insensitivity and body shaming on social media, thanks to renewed interest in “Top Model,” in light of quarantine-enhanced binging on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
Despite the resurgence of the “America’s Next Top Model” in the pop-culture zeitgeist — for better or for worse — Manuel, who spent 18 seasons on the series as the creative director, has been working on his novel since 2014.

"America's Next Top Model" is the latest show to be saved from cancellation hell. VH1 is picking up the reality series, which was axed by The CW after 22 seasons.
"Top Model" will return for a 14-episode new season, but for the first time, without host Tyra Banks. She will stay on as an executive producer alongside Ken Mok, who runs the show. VH1 said they wanted "Top Model" to be "reinvented for a new generation."
"After creating an incredible, global brand, I am beyond excited to have the show reborn," Banks said in a statement.
