Jimi Hendrix became a rock legend in the 1960s thanks to his undeniable guitar skills. Despite his lasting impact on music over half a century after his death, Hendrix’s own career in the spotlight was actually short-lived.
Jimi Hendrix | Walter Iooss Jr./Getty Images Jimi Hendrix’s rise to fame
Jimi Hendrix’s love of music was apparent from an early age. He started out playing an acoustic guitar before creating his own electric guitar, and eventually got his first real electric guitar, naming it after his girlfriend at the time and painting her name on it. Hendrix was a music fan from a young age, watching artists like Little Richard perform however he could.
Hendrix’s affinity for guitar interfered with his duties when he was in the military, eventually leading to his honorable discharge from the army. While in the service, he formed a band called The...

Jimi Hendrix solidified his spot in rock music history in the late 1960s with three albums performed with his band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. And although each album was a significant piece of work, Hendrix didn’t have much of a say in how the album covers looked when they sat on store shelves.
Jimi Hendrix | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images How Jimi Hendrix felt about his ‘Are You Experienced’ album cover
The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their debut album Are You Experienced in May 1967. The original UK version of the album featured an image of Hendrix wearing a cape with his arms wide open as he towered above his bandmates, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell.
“[Hendrix’s] music at the time was pretty wild, and the prevalent thing at the time was psychedelic and all things strange, so you had to do something odd,” Bruce Fleming, the album cover’s photographer,...

Guided by Voices are diving into the archives for their next release, Scalping the Guru, which features tracks from four EPs the prolific indie rock band released in 1993 and 1994. The new album arrives on Oct. 28 via Gbv Inc.

The songs were taken from 1993’s Static Airplane Jive (City Slang), 1994’s Get Out of My Stations (Siltbreeze), Fast Japanese Spin Cycle (Engine Records), and Clown Prince of the Menthol Trailer (Domino). There are a lot of zombie movies coming out this year, but only one of them is directed by “Eaters: Rise of the Dead” masterminds Luca Boni and Marco Ristori. “Zombie Massacre”, the duo’s latest undead-related endeavor, is being proudly presented to the world by Uwe Boll. However, don’t let the “House of the Dead” director’s involvement dissuade you from checking this one out. “Eaters” was a pretty badass movie, and from the looks of things, their latest effort seems to have been fashioned from the same mold. That’s a good thing, by the way. The film is loosely based on the video game by 1988 Games, which is about a group of police officers who are charged with delivering a nuclear bomb into a zombie-infested city. The adaptation stars Christian Boeving, Jon Campling, Mike Mitchell, Gerry Shanahan, Daniel Vivian, and the lovely Tara Cardinal. You can...

There are dozens of guys out there who can claim to have spent time, however brief, in Guided By Voices. But it takes only a few seconds of hearing Let’s Go Eat The Factory to recognize the exact right combination of guys who recorded the band’s most beloved records. Saying Factory deserves to be placed in the vaunted company of 1994’s Bee Thousand and 1995’s Alien Lanes would be overselling it a bit. But Robert Pollard’s first album with the so-called “classic” line-up of Gbv—Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Greg Demos, and Kevin Fennell—in ...

The "classic" lineup of mid-90s lo-fi gurus Guided By Voices apparently had so much fun reuniting last year with "a whole bunch of beer-drenched marathon shows," they couldn't call it quits. After playing what was supposed to be their final concert last year at Seattle's Hopscotch Festival, Robert Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Greg Demos, Mitch Mitchell and Kevin Fennell are back with their first album since 1996: Let's Go Eat The Factory. It's due out in full New Years Day 2012, but for now we've got a snatch of one of the four B-sides (we're as confused on this as Stereogum) off the album's The Doughnut For A Snowman 7 " (which is out and available for download). "One, Two, Three, Four" joins a hallowed line of cheerful indie counting songs that are as fun for adults as kids. Take it on a long road trip with the family for some cool, responsible bonding.

R.E.M. split, Nirvana's "Nevermind" 20th anniversary is on Saturday, Guns N' Roses is touring America, Pearl Jam's rock doc and subsequent soundtrack is out and Radiohead is acting like Radiohead. On a smaller scale -- but significantly -- Guided By Voices have taken their reunion to the next step and are releasing the first album of new material from its "classic" lineup for the first time since 1996. Artist Mike Mitchell has created a "Casablanca"-esque poster for "Parks and Recreation's" night at the Paley Festival on Wednesday (March 9), and we want one. Badly.
Mitchell -- who also designed the "I'm with Coco" poster that Conan O'Brien fans and eventually O'Brien himself adopted -- made the homage to "Casablanca" (you can see the original here) with Amy Poehler in Ingrid Bergman's spot and Nick Offerman as Humphrey Bogart. Works for us.
Gallery 1988 is selling the posters (there are also images for the "Freaks and Geeks"/"Undeclared" reunion, "True Blood," "The Walking Dead," "Eastbound and Down," and there will be one for "Glee" as well) at the PaleyFest events in Los Angeles this week. Any remaining prints will be available for purchase online.
Pretty cool, right?
(Thanks to /Film for bringing the posters to our attention.)...

Fans of Pawnee, Indiana and Kenny Powers are going to want to pay attention. Gallery 1988 has premiered posters for NBC's Parks and Recreation as well as HBO's Eastbound and Down to go along with their upcoming presentations [1] at PaleyFest 2011. For Parks and Recreations, Mike Mitchell (who did the famous I'm With Coco poster) pays homage to Casablanca while Derek Deal was inspired by 1985 Topps baseball cards for Eastbound and Down. Both posters will go on sale at their respective events this week and all leftovers will go on sale on Gallery1988.com [2]. Check out the full images of each poster after the jump. Thanks to the G1988 blog [3] for these images. They'll premiere the final poster of the series, for Glee, later this week. Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.
Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).
I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have...

One could say the viral campaign for the blisteringly funny new doc "Winnebago Man" preceded even the Internet when the profane outtakes of Rv salesman Jack Rebney leaked out from the production of an industrial video during the '80s (you can see it here, millions of others have) and made their way out into the world on fuzzy VHS copies and eventually YouTube.
Soon, Rebney would be anointed the "world's angriest man" by the legions that discovered the video, including celebrity fans like Conan O'Brien and director Mike Mitchell (who would have Ben Affleck recite Rebney's most famous line, "would you do me a kindness" in "Surviving Christmas").
However, it would be one of Rebney's less famous admirers who would set out to discover that if the former Winnebago salesman is angry about anything these days, it's Dick Cheney, and while he remains quite the character, he's an emotionally...

HollywoodNews.com: The summer fare keeps coming with nary an original idea in sight. This week’s offerings boast a distinct “Saturday Night Live” vibe, featuring a showdown between prominent alums and current cast members.
Shrek Forever After
“Shrek the Third” disappointed animation fans so expectations are on hold for what is promised as the “final” installment, released in the now de rigueur three dimensions. The stars, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas, are back as the big green guy gets into trouble after entering into an ill-advised contract with the nefarious Rumplestiltskin. Director Mike Mitchell (“Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo,” “Sky High”) takes the helm. Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke wrote the script.
The reviews are split fairly evenly between critics who believe there is still a bit of magic in Far, Far Away Land and those who are ready to stick a fork in it.

Kids just wanna have fun -- or so DreamWorks Animation's bean counters will be hoping this weekend.
The Glendale studio's Paramount-distributed "Shrek Forever After" opens Friday, with execs more challenged than comforted by the knowledge that each installment in the family-comedy franchise has posted successively bigger bows and together have collected $1.23 billion in their domestic campaigns. The most recent entry -- May 2007's "Shrek the Third" -- unspooled with $121.6 million en route to an eventual $322.7 million domestic tally.
But the $441.2 million rung up in the U.S. and Canada by May 2004's mega-leggy "Shrek 2" was the 9-year-old franchise's most-lucrative domestic campaign. So that sequel's total boxoffice and the threequel's opening tally are the marks to beat -- with the fourquel likely to fall short by both measures.

Horror remakes are definitely the hot new trend in Hollywood and I had no idea just how many remakes were being planned until I sat down and drew up a list of as many as I could find. I stopped at 7 pages and needless to say it seems that just about every movie you can imagine is getting a remake-prequel or reboot into 3D.
Here is a pretty complete list of upcoming horror remakes as of today in alphabetical order. Note: There are a few on this list that are only in the early phases of discussion and in some cases I included franchise reboots as well.
13 Tzameti: Starting the list off 13 Tzameti is more thriller then horror but still worthy of making the list. The film which started filming in New York awhile back will star Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. The original film is a tale of Russian roulette with gruesome outcomes.

Toronto -- Canadian film and TV distributor Incendo is to release Paramount Pictures' movie titles in Quebec theatres.
The deal between Montreal-based Incendo and Paramount Pictures Entertainment Canada will start with the release of Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" in the French-speaking province on February 19.
The Incendo pipeline will then be filled with "How to Train Your Dragon," from directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2," and the Mike Myers-starrer "Shrek Forever After," directed by Mike Mitchell.
Incendo did a successful road test with Paramount by recently releasing "The Lovely Bones," "Up in the Air" and "Paranormal Activity" in Quebec.
The indie distributor also released in Quebec movies by Paramount Vantage, Paramount Pictures' specialty film division.
In Quebec, as elsewhere in the Canadian market, Hollywood releases dominate the local multiplex.

Established 1974! Our news column practices legerdemain.
Meet Merlin (Colin Morgan, center), the teen wizard star of NBC’s new Arthurian fantasy series that bows in the USA Sunday. That’s the reigning King Uther (Buffy’s Anthony Stewart Head) third from right.
Sci-fi TV
There are several new genre efforts this weekend. ABC’s The Goode Family continues its ratings-challenged run (Friday, 8:30 p.m.) with “A Tale of Two Lesbians.” A new-to-the-usa Primeval episode debuts on BBC America Saturday, 9 p.m. The heroes battle prehistoric birds from out of time! Sadly, ITV has just (improbably) cancelled Primeval so these third season shows (seven yet to air here) will be the last. New episodes of two already dead programs are also on Saturday: Kings (“The Sabbath Queen,” 8 p.m., NBC) and Harper’S Island (“Snap,” 9 p.m., CBS).
The big new guns are being saved for Sunday where NBC premieres Two episodes of Merlin (8 p.

Who will win in this showdown between mortal animated enemies? Will it be Winnie the Pooh and his Hundred Acre Gang?
Animation Scene
Could it be the Grudge Match of the Century? The Disney-trained, A.A. Milne-bred honeypot Winnie the Pooh vs. DreamWorks Animation’s heavy—and we do mean heavy!—weight Kung Fu Panda! May the best bear win!
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Winnie (a.k.a. “Pooh bear” to his intimates) will be returning to the screen in 2011 with a brand-new, previously-undisclosed hand-drawn animated film. Disney also promises a renewed emphasis on the Pooh, with more books and licensed merchandise (even though the folks at the Hundred Acre Wood are already #2 in worldwide character licensing revenue, outshone only by Mickey Mouse). For further info on Disney’s plans (being announced today in Las Vegas), see this link.
