The 62nd New York Film Festival (September 27-October 14) got underway Friday with “Nickel Boys”, rookie feature director RaMell Ross’ daring screen adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel. The film spawned strong applause as well as ardent debate on its challenging mise-en-scène from the attendees at Alice Tully Hall. One thing they agreed on was “King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s inevitable second Supporting Actress nod.
At the ritual after-party at Tavern on the Green, an annual celebration for the New York film community, Ellis-Taylor admitted she couldn’t watch herself and ran from the theater. She provides the beating heart for this extraordinary and divisive movie. “Every year we spend months talking about what opening night will be,” said NYFF director Dennis Lim at the after-party, “because it sets the tone for the festival. RaMell is a filmmaker we’ve loved and believed in since ‘Hale County [This Morning, This Evening].’ [‘Nickel Boys’] is not a feel-good movie.

Blake Lively has always made interesting choices as an artist. As /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams noted while writing about the larger-than-anticipated box office debut for Lively's romantic drama "It Ends with Us," the "Gossip Girl" alum is the rare actor to become "a reliable star of so-called 'chick flicks' i.e. movies overtly marketed towards a female audience" in recent years. This dates back to her breakout role nearly 20 years ago in Ken Kwapis' "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," a deeply earnest coming-of-age film that also happens to be about a pair of jeans that magically fits four teen girls with decidedly different body types. It's a good movie!
As she settled into adulthood, Lively continued to branch out, collaborating with auteurs like Rebecca Miller and Oliver Stone while primarily focusing on low-to-mid-budget, non-franchise fare at a time when such films were being banished to the direct-to-streaming realm. That's not...

“Truth Serum,” a short film starring “Baby Reindeer” creator Richard Gadd, has been snapped up by Omeleto.
Directed by Vika Evdokimenko, “Truth Serum” is a comedy that follows a group of guests at a housewarming party who are slipped a mysterious drug. “When ugly truths start to emerge, chaos reigns and threatens the relationships of old friends,” reads the logline.
“Baby Reindeer” fans will no doubt enjoy seeing Gadd playing a character that is not dissimilar to the Netflix series’ Donny Dunn. Gadd’s character of Jimi is friends with the host couple; he is described as a “liability” whose “self-destructive behavior masks deep self-loathing and a secret that’s not ready to come out.”
Gadd stars alongside Olivia Vinall (“Road Kill”) as a party hostess at the end of her tether and Sophie Kennedy Clark (“The Danish Girl”) as an unreformed party girl who’s dragged her underage daughter along for the ride.

If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Stepping up, in the years since, to offer many of them a home, is this indie distributor, which appears to be in the midst of its biggest year yet.
Founded in 2012 by Rich Goldberg and Mitch Budin, Vertical comes from humble beginnings, according to partner Peter Jarowey, who notes that the team at one point operated out of “a literal broom closet.” Initially working to establish itself as a resource in securing ancillary revenue for indies, the company has of late has become a theatrical player in its own right. Aspiring from the beginning to be a purveyor of “commercial,...

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis indulged in deep method-acting to get into the role of Daniel Plainview for There Will Be Blood. The highly praised role would see him get physical with another actor, who described the intense experience.

Opening nights at major festivals often lean towards the showier end of the spectrum, reaching for films with starry, red carpet-friendly casts and headline-grabbing premises to kick off proceedings in flashy style. The past two Berlinales boasted fun but forgettable openers — Rebecca Miller’s “She Came To Me” and Francois Ozon’s “Peter von Kant” — which is why it’s a pleasant surprise that this year’s Berlinale Opening Night offers something altogether subtler, a genuinely profound low-key gem which will be remembered long after the champagne and sequins have been swept away.
On the surface, “Small Things Like These,” produced by and starring the freshly Oscar-nominated Cillian Murphy (and with “Oppenheimer” co-star Matt Damon also on board as producer) fits the Opening Night brief well. In reality, however, this is a surprisingly understated film, dour and difficult to watch in places, and firmly rooted in Irish culture and history.

Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.
True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.
“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors and actors to develop their original independent projects.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
We discuss everyone’s favorite method man: Daniel Day-Lewis. Our B-Sides are 1988’s Stars and Bars, Eversmile, New Jersey (1989), Jim Sheridan’s The Boxer, and Rebecca Miller’s The Ballad of Jack and Rose.
Returning guest Fiona Underhill joins us to discuss the myth-making around the actor, his process, as well as a few hot takes on whether some of his most-lauded credits are properly rated. Naturally, we also discuss his peak ‘90s hotness, and his influence, for better or worse, on a younger generation of actors.
The scope of our B-Sides unlock a few lesser-seen tools in Day-Lewis’ belt, from the farcical to the oddball. These are modes he doesn’t necessarily seem comfortable in as a younger star,...

Rebecca Miller's new film, She Came to Me, is a bit of a mess, stitching themes and storylines, wild tonal swerves, and overwrought ideas that don't fit together all that well. This fate's especially disappointing because the project seemed ripe with promise and potential. Most of all, it looked like an excellent opportunity for Hollywood to embrace actor Peter Dinklage as a romantic figure. This fate's especially disappointing because the project seemed ripe with promise and potential. Most of all, it looked like an excellent opportunity for Hollywood to embrace actor Peter Dinklage as a romantic figure. Though he reached peak fame by playing Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, a performance of wit and projected stratagem, it can be argued that his best calling card is an ability to illustrate the heart's amorous yearnings…...

The 31st edition of the Camerimage Film Festival, Europe’s top cinematography event, will welcome a host of stellar guests to the Gothic Polish town of Torun, including Adam Driver, Sean Penn and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer.
Driver and Penn will screen their latest films, respectively, the high-octane biopic “Ferrari” and the portrait of Eastern Europe’s most remarkable wartime president, Volodymyr Zelensky, “Superpower.”
As regular fest guests have learned, the calendar of film screenings is just as important to study as the schedule for panels, seminars and masterclasses. That’s because Camerimage, with limited event space for now, strategically holds filmmaker talks following film projections, often in the same hall of the Jordanki cinema space.
Which means opening-night audiences who linger after Camerimage screens Robbie Ryan-shot “Poor Things,” the Frankenstein-esque fairytale by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Emma Stone, will be able to...

Exclusive: The Renny Harlin action thriller The Bricklayer, starring Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), has been picked up by Vertical for a day-and-date release in the U.S. early next year.
An adaptation of the same-name novel by former FBI agent Paul Lindsay — who used the pen name Noah Boyd — the film also stars Clifton Collins Jr. (Westworld), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), and Ilfenesh Hadera (Billions). The story is that of a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations begin turning against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) — their most brilliant and rebellious operative — out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.

Parasitic obsession sickens the roots of “Eileen,” director William Oldroyd’s adaptation of novelist Ottessa Moshfegh’s slim 2015 chiller. The 1960s-set noir, which played out of competition way back in January at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, stars Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie in career-topping turns. Neon will open the film in limited release on December 1 before going wide on December 8. Watch the official trailer below.
Set in a punishing 1964 winter outside of Boston, “Eileen” centers on the title character, a young secretary played by Thomas McKenzie, who becomes enchanted by the glamorous, blonde new counselor at the prison where she works. Their friendship takes a sinister turn around a recently incarcerated juvenile, now at the institution after his father’s murder, and together Eileen and Rebecca (Hathaway) spark a twisted connection reminiscent of “Carol” meets Hitchcock — especially when you consider Hathaway’s character’s cinematic namesake.

Bruce Springsteen took to his SiriusXM E Street Radio show From My Home To Yours, where he reconnected with some old friends and revealed his Mount Rushmore of rock bands.
In the podcast series’ 30th episode, Springsteen spoke with veteran musicians from the Freehold, New Jersey scene, including Mike Wilson, Mike Domanski, and Donnie Powell, members of the mid-’60s Freehold band the Legends, and Craig Caprioni, singer for the Rogues, Springsteen’s very first band.
At one point Springsteen posed the question, “After The Beatles, second favorite band? And we can’t count The Rolling Stones.”
After a short deliberation, Springsteen shared his list of favorite bands, saying, “It’s Beatles, Stones, Animals, that’s how my playlist goes, you know. But any Dave Clark 5 fans?” He later praised DC5 for making “great records” before segueing to the band’s 1964 single “Any Way You Want It.” Listen to the clip below.

Despite the amount of horror movies released in September, October seemed like a better time for the genre to get a bump with the latest attempt to revive a horror classic. That wasn’t really the case. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There were indeed some hopes that the David Gordon Green-directed “The Exorcist: Believer” would be the good start for a new trilogy based on the William Friedkin-directed 1973 adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel, a major theatrical blockbuster at the time that became a horror classic. Green even brought back Ellen Burstyn from the original movie, joining Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd and Jennifer Nettles, as a continuation of Friedkin’s film.
Despite anticipation for another solid “requel” ala Green’s 2018 “Halloween,” “Believer” was universally panned by critics with an awful 23% on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its release into 3,663 theaters by Universal. It...

It wasn’t her intention, but Taylor Swift saved this weekend as well as ones still to come.
“The Era Tour” concert film opens Friday with over $100 million in estimated presales, but it already forced “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), originally set for October 13, to move up a week and get out of the way.
As a result, the sequel to William Friedkin’s smash hit dominated this weekend with $27.2 million. That’s more than double the #2 title, “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount), with $11.8 million.
All told, this weekend grossed around $75 million. Without “Exorcist,” and assuming other titles would pick up some of the slack, that number would have been closer to $55 million — and close to the worst of 2023. Instead, it improved $16 million (27 percent) over last year, which also included Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day on Monday. Year to date remains up about 26 percent.

A24’s Dicks: The Musical had one of the best limited openings of the year, grossing $220,867 on seven screens in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It expands in NY/LA/Sf next weekend ahead of a national rollout starting 10/20 for the R-rated romp directed by Larry Charles.
The film, developed and co-produced by Chernin Entertainment (The Greatest Showman) based on a stage show by comedians Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, caught a wave with a solid per screen average of $31,552 including sold out Q&As in NY and LA. Sharp and Aaron star as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents played by Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally. Anne Hathaway has been acting professionally since she was a teenager. And yet, she’s pretty sure she’s only scratched the surface of what she can and wants to do in her career.
In her new film “She Came to Me,” written and directed by Rebecca Miller and in theaters now, Hathaway stars as a therapist-turned-wife to Peter Dinklage’s character, an opera composer. But, by the end of the film, Patricia (Hathaway) is a therapist-turned-nun, who answered what she felt was her higher calling.
Tack that onto the other roles she’s played — a princess (later a queen) in “The Princess Diaries,” Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises,” an astronaut in “Interstellar,” to name a few — Hathaway has gotten a lot of variety on screen. So,...

A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Anne Hathaway’s She Came to Me is one of the independent films that received an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which she thinks is “amazing.”
The actress and producer stopped by The Late Show With Seth Meyers on Thursday to promote the film, which also stars Peter Dinklage and Marisa Tomei. Hathaway began by praising the writer and director, Rebecca Miller, who has been working on the project for almost 10 years.

When writer-director Rebecca Miller was playing back her latest film “She Came to Me,” she felt it was missing a compelling song. The National’s singer-turned-composer Bryce Dessner was sitting next to her when the thought entered: Bruce Springsteen would be perfect.
Dessner was drawing inspiration from Marisa Tomei’s character Katrina, who he describes as “a muse and this gutsy character. She’s a miraculous, amazing and powerful woman. She just felt like she could be a character from a Springsteen song,” he says.
Miller, who used the Springsteen hit “Dancing in the Dark” in her 2015 film “Maggie’s Plan,” loved the idea of Springsteen writing the end credits song. “It was an absurd idea, but it just came to me,” Dessner tells Variety. “What would normally feel insurmountable to most people is not the thing that occurs to Rebecca first, but she said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”

Guilty of Romance: Miller Weaves a Wacky and Disarmingly Charming Love Tapestry
To those who think the possibilities of heartfelt romantic comedies dried up in the formulaic ether ages ago, look no further than the bewitching She Came to Me from Rebecca Miller, her sixth, and by far, kookiest, offering to date. In essence, she presents a series of woefully neurotic characters who coincide and collide in ways which sound perilously contrived on paper, and not unlike grinning through the insufferable idiosyncrasies of a first date, there’s some patience involved in warming up to them. But the payoff is considerably pleasing in ways which bolster the strengths of its characters rather than crippling them at the finish line to satisfy unstated requirements for a happy ending.…...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on October 5th, 2023, reviewing “She Came to Me” a film about the power of love and New York City tugboats. In theaters on October 6th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Peter Dinklage is Steven, a composer of operas who is stuck in a creative block. Patricia (Anne Hathaway) is his anal retentive psychologist wife, and she suggests fresh air as a way to unlock the block. So while Steven is walking the dog he meets Katrina (Marisa Tomei), a tug boat captain who is “addicted to romance.” Their brief encounter inspires the opera, but also sets in motion a series of events that includes Steven’s stepson Julian (Evan Ellison), his girlfriend Tereza (Harlow Jane), and Tereza’s parents (Brian d’Arcy and Joanna Kulig) … all who have problems of their own.

Marisa Tomei plays a lovelorn — and love-addicted! — tugboat captain in writer-director Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me.” That may sound twee in theory, but Miller and Tomei anchor the character, an unpretentious and brazen-foot-forward woman named Katrina, in an emotional reality for this screwball indie comedy.
No one character gets top billing in “She Came to Me,” whether Katrina, or the writer’s-blocked opera composer Steven (Peter Dinklage) she seduces before becoming his muse, or Steven’s wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway), an uber-organized psychiatrist who thinks she’s breezy but most certainly isn’t.
The film shot on location in Brooklyn, whose harbor Katrina operates out of. In the film, Steven, faced with losing a major commission, takes a long, lonely walk that lands him in the arms and bed of Katrina, who ultimately becomes the subject of his next hugely successful opera.

Anne Hathaway, similar to her character Patricia in Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” has dealt with being a perfectionist.
“I think perhaps in the earlier part of my life, I believed a little bit more in perfectionism,” Hathaway told Variety at the New York screening of “She Came to Me” on Tuesday night. “[Patricia] thinks that if she can just do everything right, she’ll protect the people who she loves from having bad things happen to them.”
Set in New York, the rom-com follows composer Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), who is creatively blocked just weeks before the deadline for his latest commission. At the urging of his wife and former therapist Patricia (Hathaway), he searches for inspiration and finds it in Katrina (Marisa Tomei), a thrill-seeking tugboat captain.
Hathaway and director-writer Miller discussed bringing nuance to Patricia, a seemingly put-together, type A wife and mother on the verge of mental collapse.

[Editor’s note: Anne Hathaway received a SAG-AFTRA waiver to participate in this interview for “She Came to Me.”]
“Oh, gosh, I have been fearing this moment,” Anne Hathaway said. The Oscar-winning actress is referring to being asked about playing a psychiatrist in back-to-back independent films, “Eileen” and “She Came to Me” who — in each feature — lets out a cathartic, instantly iconic scream in pivotal dramatic moments, sure to be excerpted by the internet (and adoring gay fans like this one).
In Rebecca Miller’s eccentric relationship comedy “She Came to Me,” Hathaway plays Dr. Patricia Jessup-Lauddem, a hyper-organized, Ocd-tending New York psychiatrist whose desire to achieve her “most uncluttered space” leads her on the path to becoming a nun. In William Oldroyd’s darker queer noir “Eileen,” she’s the elegant blond-headed prison counselor Rebecca St. John, whose rebellious air allures younger, impressionable secretary Eileen, played by Thomasin McKenzie.

SAG-AFTRA’s presence at TIFF continued into Saturday with a special picket outside Amazon offices here in Toronto with Canada’s commercial actors union Actra, who’ve been in a 501 day contract lockout with the country’s advertising agencies org.
Patricia Arquette, whose feature directorial debut Gonzo Girl, played on Friday night at the fest, showed up to show her support alongside SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who praised the Oscar winner for having a project under a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement.
Arquette described the current standoff between actors and studios:
“What we got is a low-functioning dynamic, which is ‘I’m gonna get mine, and I don’t care what happens to you’ and have to shift to a high functioning dynamic which is ‘This is what I’d like, but I don’t want it, if it really hurts you.'”

The National’s Bryce Dessner has detailed his new soundtrack for the upcoming absurdist comedy She Came to Me starring Peter Dinklage. Out September 29th via Warner Classics and Unigram, the album features an original song from Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa called “Addicted to Romance.”
According to a press release, She Came to Me director Rebecca Miller said the soundtrack came from an “intimate process” of collaboration with Dessner, who boarded the film during its earliest stages. This was especially important since the album had to incorporate two on-screen operas from the movie. Conducted by André de Ridder, the score features contributions from French pianist Katia Labèque and vocals from Greer Grimsley, Alicia Hall Moran, Isabel Leonard, and Emmett O’Hanlon.
In a statement, Dessner described the film as “one of the most rewarding and creative experiences I have had” and said it allowed him to “make the music that I wanted to make,...

Vertical is shifting the theatrical release of Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy “She Came to Me” by a week. The film, which stars Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, will open on Oct. 6 instead of Sept. 29, when it was originally slated to premiere. Vertical opted to change its release strategy after Apple decided to move the opening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to later in the month. “She Came to Me” was granted an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which means that the cast will be able to do promotional activity around its release despite the fact that actors are on strike against major studios and streamers.
“In light of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ release date shift, we jumped at the opportunity for the Oct. 6 date for ‘She Came to Me,'” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented. “It is a competitively less crowded weekend which...

Peter Dinklage takes creative inspiration from a sexual experience with Marisa Tomei amid marital struggles between himself and Anne Hathaway in the first trailer for She Came to Me.
Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan) wrote and directed the romantic-comedy film that hits theaters Sept. 29 from Vertical Entertainment. The feature centers on an opera composer (Dinklage) who is married to a therapist (Hathaway) and has a fling with a tugboat captain (Tomei), which leads to a professional breakthrough for him. Brian d’Arcy James and Joanna Kulig also star.
“I’m suffering from a temporary blockage at the moment,” Dinklage says in the footage. Later in the trailer, Tomei tells him, “I was really angry at you, and now it turns out I’m your muse.”
She Came to Me counts Danny Cohen, Amanda Ghost and Vince Holden as executive producers. Hathaway, Miller, Len Blavatnik, Damon Cardasis, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon are producers.
