Sundance breakout queer coming-of-age film “Mutt” is finally unleashed stateside. Writer-director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s debut film stars Lío Mehiel as a young trans man named Feña, and the film won Mehiel a Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Strand releases the film in the U.S. this summer, beginning at New York’s Film Forum, and IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer premiere below.
“Mutt” follows Feña across his romances, friendships, and family over the course of one hectic day in New York City, where three people from Feña’s past are thrust back into his life. "Poker's all about waiting... then something happens." Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for Paul Schrader's new film The Card Counter, a gambler drama arriving in theaters this fall. It was just announced for the 2021 Venice Film Festival, premiering in the fest's main competition this September. A compulsive card player attempts to give guidance to a young man who is out for revenge against a mutual enemy - a military colonel. They end up going from casino to casino to build up their earnings, but risk getting lost in all of the cards and money. Oscar Isaac stars as William Tell, joined by Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe, Ekaterina Baker, Billy Slaughter, and Joel Michaely. So this isn't exactly the best trailer, a lot of strange things going on, including that flashback footage in B&w. But I'm intrigued nonetheless, and hopefully Schrader has crafted another...

Exclusive: Luna Blaise (Manifest), Madison Pettis (Five Points), Charlie Gillespie (Julie And The Phantoms), Hart Denton (Riverdale), Greer Grammer (Awkward), Will Peltz (Unfriended), Daniella Perkins (Red Ruby) and Dylan Flashner (Lansky) are among the cast for coming-of-age drama Deltopia, which is currently in production in L.A.
The movie takes place over a period of 24 hours as a group of friends from Southern California finish their last day of high school and travel to Santa Barbara for “Deltopia,” the biggest party of their lives.
The film is loosely based on real events from the actual Deltopia, the annual unsanctioned street party held each spring in Isla Vista, Santa Barbara. In 2014, authorities arrested around 100 party-goers when the large event turned violent after one of the revellers was detained by police.

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Wild Indian, Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr’s debut feature that had its world premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Michael Greyeyes, Chaske Spencer, Jesse Eisenberg, Kate Bosworth star in the pic, which will get a theatrical release later this year.
The plot of Corbine’s screenplay revolves around Makwa, a young Anishinaabe boy. He often appears at school with bruises he says he got falling down, but no one believes him. He and his only friend, Ted-o, like to escape by playing in the woods, until the day Makwa shockingly murders a schoolmate. After covering up the crime, the two go on to live very different lives. Now, as adult men, they must face the truth of what they have done and what they have become.
Greyeyes and Spencer star as the adult Makwa and Ted-o, respectively. Newcomers Phoenix Wilson and Julian Gopal play Makwa and Ted-o as boys.
Thomas Mahoney, Corbine and Eric Tavitian produced the pic, which was executive produced by Céline Dornier, Frédéric Fiore, Katy Drake Bettner, Niraj Bhatia, Joel Michaely, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Adam Margules, Lesli A. Masoner, Dan McClung, Adriana Banta, Jake Carter, Eisenberg, Heather Rae, and Brent Ryan Green. It hails from Logical Pictures, 30West, Om Films, Boulderlight Pictures, mm2 Entertainment and PurePlay Entertainment.
“When we first saw Wild Indian at Sundance this year, we were struck by first-time writer-director Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr’s masterful handling of such an intimate story and the captivating performances from the entire cast,” said Rich Goldberg, co-president of Vertical Entertainment. “We are so proud to be partnering with the whole filmmaking team to bring this affecting film to audiences later this year.”
Vertical’s Peter Jarowey and Josh Spector negotiated the deal with 30West and Endeavor Content.

Early on in “Vanquish,” Ruby Rose as Morgan Freeman’s improbable housekeeper is very awkwardly chopping some vegetable — the awkwardness providing a rare plausible moment, as Rose seems an even less likely maker-of-dinner than she does slayer-of-many-criminal-goons. If she’d kept slicing that carrot or whatever for the remaining 90 minutes here, the results would have been approximately as exciting as the high-body-count action occupying most of veteran writer-director George Gallo’s feature.
“Vanquish” isn’t bad so much as inert — nothing here is convincing, tense, kinetic, outrageous, or silly enough to give the movie even fleeting life. The script is so by-the-numbers, the performers can hardly hide their disinterest, a feeling soon to be shared by viewers lured by the promise of these stars in a violent revenge tale. Lionsgate opens it in select theaters April 16, followed by on demand and digital release four days later.

"You know who she is – just stay out of her way!" Lionsgate has unveiled a full trailer for an action movie called Vanquish, yet another of these dime-a-dozen bland action features with derivative plots. From the director of Double Take, Middle Men, and The Poison Rose comes this stylish, glossy action-thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Ruby Rose that shows what desperation can drive a person to do. A young mother is trying to put her dark past as a Russian drug courier behind her, but retired cop Damon forces Victoria to do his bidding by holding her daughter hostage. It also stars Patrick Muldoon, Julie Lott, Ekaterina Baker, Nick Vallelonga, Joel Michaely, and Miles Doleac. This doesn't look terrible, but doesn't look so great either. Freeman and Rose are cool to see in this, but that doesn't automatically make it a good film. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for George Gallo's Vanquish,...

"There's no need to escalate this to the point of no return!" STX Films has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy called Me You Madness, a kooky neon-filled romcom mashed up with American Psycho. Louise Linton stars in, wrote, directed, and produced the tongue-in-cheek movie. Linton plays Catherine Black, a brilliant, ruthless business executive who runs a top hedge fund in L.A. She lives a wealthy but ice-cold life and is a self-declared murderous psychopath. Enter Tyler Jones, a handsome young petty-thief and con man, arriving at her Malibu estate seeking "a room for rent" while naively unaware that he might be her next meal. Co-starring Ed Westwick as Tyler, along with Joel Michaely, Shuya Chang, and Gwen Van Dam. "Romance blossoms amid glamorous action in this neon-tinged, self-aware erotic thriller riff from writer/director/star Louise Linton, driven by a high-energy 80s soundtrack." This looks ridiculous.

Focus Features strikes again.
The indie film company continued a torrid acquisitions streak, nabbing rights to Paul Schrader’s revenge thriller “The Card Counter,” one of the hottest titles available at this year’s Cannes Film Festival virtual market. “The Card Counter” is Schrader’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated “First Reformed.” The cast includes Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe.
It’s the latest splashy buy for Focus, which also recently nabbed James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” and Justin Chon’s “Blue Bayou” out of this new, coronavirus-mandated virtual Cannes.
“The folks at Focus are the best at what they do,” Schrader said in a statement. “Over the years I’ve been jealous of directors in the Focus fold. Now happily I am one.”

"Who are you?" "Just a courier." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for the cheesy action film The Courier, an "intense action-thriller" that unfolds in real time. If you haven't had enough of the Transporter movies, there's even more in this. Olga Kurylenko stars as a badass female motorcycle courier who must fight off a sadistic crime boss' henchmen in order to protect the one witness that can bring him down. She discovers that one of the packages might not be as harmless as she was told. Also starring Gary Oldman, Dermot Mulroney, William Moseley, Alicia Agneson, Craig Conway, Amit Shah, Lee Charles, and Joel Michaely. I'm digging Oldman with the eye-patch, but the rest of this looks terrible - derivative, and bland, and cliche. What's with the voices sounding so weird? Might as well skip it, doesn't look so good. Here's the first official trailer (+ UK version / poster) for Zackary Adler's The Courier,...

What a tremendous breath of fresh air this is. Usually, period pieces or biopics of figures such as Emily Dickinson, they tend to be rather dry. Then, there’s Wild Nights with Emily, which takes a far more lighthearted route. In fact, this is basically a dramedy, which you’d never expect based on the premise. That’s what makes the film really work, too. It’s not a movie that’s stuffy or antiseptic in any way. It’s clever, witty, and brimming with life. Hitting theaters this weekend, it’s a really pleasant surprise and a real showcase for both its filmmaker as well as its star. The movie is a period piece, one that’s actually a mix of comedy and drama, which is pretty rare. Taking from her private letters, this work presents Emily Dickinson (Molly Shannon) not as a recluse, but instead the way she actually was,...

"Let me tell the real story about this special poet." Greenwich Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Wild Nights with Emily, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year and also stopped by the Seattle, Sarasota, Edinburgh, Hamptons, Philadelphia, and Provincetown Film Festivals. Wild Nights with Emily shows us the little known other side of the writer Emily Dickinson's life, in particular her relationship with another woman, based on her private letters. Molly Shannon stars as Emily Dickinson, in love with an editor who admires her for more than her ability to write. Described as a "timely critique of how women's history is rewritten, Wild Nights with Emily remains vibrant, irreverent and tender--a perhaps closer depiction of Emily Dickinson's real life than anything seen before." Also stars Amy Seimetz, Susan Ziegler, Brett Gelman, Dana Melanie, and Joel Michaely. Amusing and witty. Here's the...

Cue the '90s Flashbacks! The Casts of "Empire Records" and "Can't Hardly Wait" Reunited This Weekend
Ethan Embry had a very busy weekend. The actor took part in not one, but two different reunions in Los Angeles, celebrating a pair of '90s films that we still can't get enough of! First up: "Empire Records." Buzzfeed hosted a 20th anniversary screening of the flick on Friday evening, with a Q&A with the cast following the film. While Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger and Rex Manning himself, Maxwell Caulfield, were Mia, Embry was joined by Robin Tunney, Johnny Whitworth, Coyote Shivers, director Allan Moyle and screenwriter Carol Heikkinen. We gotta hand it to them, this cast still looks amazing two decades later. Aj is dreamy as ever! During the panel, Tunney revealed that it was her idea to have her character shave her head. "Allan came to me and he’s like, ‘I think the studio wants to fire you ‘cause they think you’re kind of too cute to be depressed,...

Justin Kelly, a protege of Gus Van Sant, has set a summer start date for Michael, a film that Kelly will direct that will star James Franco. The pic is based on the Benoit Denizet-Lewis article “My Ex-Gay Friend,” published in The New York Times Magazine. While there have been some gay empowerment-themed films cropping up (Van Sant and Franco did Milk together), this one takes the opposite track. Franco is playing the title character, a gay activist who, after enduring years of taunts and struggle, becomes an anti-gay Christian pastor. Kelly, who’s repped by Gotham Group and attorney Peter Nichols, wrote the script. Franco, Vince Jolivette, Scott Reed, Ron Singer and Joel Michaely will produce, while Van Sant is exec producer.

The film stars Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler and "2001: A Space Odyssey" star Keir Dullea. Domestic rights are still up for grabs via Kevin Iwashina and Zac Bright of Preferred Content. Space Station 76 is a comedic drama about a group of people (and several robots) living on a space station in a 1970’s-version of the future. When a new Assistant Captain arrives, she inadvertently ignites tensions among the crew, prompting them to confront their darkest secrets. Barely contained lust, jealousy, and anger all bubble to the surface, becoming just as dangerous as the asteroid that’s heading right for them. The film was produced by Edward Parks, Rachel Ward, Dan Burks, Joel Michaely and Katherine Ann McGregor. Niraj Bhatia...
