Netflix has acquired the spec script and aims to fast track Out There, a new high concept sci-fi thriller described as in the vein of A Quiet Place and Cloverfield, Deadline reports today.
Out There will mark the veteran editor Stefan Grube.
Plot details remain under wraps at this time, but the sci-fi thriller “revolves around a fractured family who must face the most catastrophic day of their lives.” Which does fall in line with the comparisons to A Quiet Place and Cloverfield. Considering Grube’s work on the suspenseful 10 Cloverfield Lane, we can likely expect that same level of breathless tension here.
Grube’s credits also include Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. As for the spec script that was picked up by Netflix, that hails from Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Ian Levy. The Van Dykes previously wrote Don’t Worry Darling, and Levy scripted Pay the Ghost.

Actor Leonard Nimoy was known for his role as Spock in the original Star Trek. The actor played the role for three seasons in the show and even reprised his role for the original films featuring the same cast. He also had a cameo as Elder Spock in J.J. Abrams’ reboot Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness.
As a filmmaker, Nimoy is known for helming the classic Three Men and a Baby. However, he made his debut with the third Star Trek film The Search for Spock. While the actor’s new position made it awkward for the rest of the cast, Nimoy also reportedly respectfully insulted the directors of the first two films while pitching himself for the job.

There are four credited screenwriters on Leonard Nimoy's 1986 time travel comedy "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes were hired together to write the film and they followed all the appropriate studio mandates, careful to write a role specifically for Eddie Murphy -- he had expressed interest in appearing -- and to beef up Admiral Kirk's role to appease a snippy William Shatner. Meerson and Krikes met with Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett early in production to bang out a story, and the quartet ultimately invented the plot: the Enterprise crew would travel back in time to the present day to retrieve a pair of humpback whale, a species that is extinct in the 23rd century. They must do this to appease a mysterious space probe that is draining the Earth's oceans.

"Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" is not everyone's favorite movie in the franchise, but it is an important one. Not only did it revive Spock after the events of the much-beloved "Wrath of Khan," but it also was an important first as Leonard Nimoy stepped behind the camera to direct the film as well. Before that, Nimoy had only directed select episodes of TV shows like "Night Gallery." But this was his feature directorial debut, and fittingly, it was within the franchise that made him famous. However, it did create a bit of awkward tension with his friend and co-star, William Shatner, who had starred as Captain Kirk since the beginning of the original series.
Nimoy and Shatner had worked together for nearly 20 years by the time the 1984 film rolled around. But with Nimoy behind the camera, the power dynamic was about to change in a meaningful way.

New Regency/20th Century Studio’s $104M-global grossing The Creator will debut on Disney-sister streamer Hulu on Dec. 20.

The Gareth Edwards directed original sci-fi movie stuck to its fall theatrical date and weathered the actors strike without any promotion from actors.
The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney, and is set amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war…and mankind itself. The 1991 two-part "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Unification" was a banner event for Trekkies. Although Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) appeared in the show's pilot as a 137-year-old man, the events of the series were meant to be far enough removed from the original "Star Trek" series to assure no further crossovers. "Next Generation" was determined to shake off the legacy of its forebear and forge its own path.
After five seasons, however, the new legacy was established. "Next Generation" had lasted longer than the original series, and its characters were now recognizable on their own merits. "Next Generation" became its own thing. It was only then, when the show could stand on its own two legs and didn't require constant references to the original series, that a guest spot from a beloved original series character could take place. In "Unification," Spock (Leonard Nimoy) returned. Trekkies loved it, not just because they loved Spock,...

The new trailer for Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi epic, The Creator, has landed, courtesy of 20th Century Studios. In this final look at the film before its opening later this month, the young AI child curiously inquires Joshua, played by John David Washington, what heaven is. This poignant moment happens to almost any young person who is curious about faith and humanity and soul, but here, it kicks off the philosophical ambiguity of Edwards’ film.

Now that John Williams is winding down with his prestigious career, one of the prominent blockbuster composers of the last couple of decades is Hans Zimmer. Most may know him from his work with Christopher Nolan, although Nolan has opted to work with Ludwig Göransson in his last two outings. Zimmer’s collaboration with Nolan on Inception even notably ushered in the trend of the “Bwaaam” musical sting that can be found in most trailers to help intensify and punctuate a dramatic turn.
Although Zimmer has had a career spanning many genres, his work is recognized chiefly from his big-budget sci-fi or action movies. Film Music Reporter has recently revealed that the maestro will be contributing his booming tones to the upcoming Gareth Edwards sci-fi film starring John David Washington titled The Creator. Since Hasbro declared it was shedding all but its core business, Lionsgate has been oft-mentioned as a suitor, as has Legendary. Hollywood has found plot lines within the whole “technology gone bad” genre for years, but Gareth Edwards directing a film in which humans go to war against artificial intelligence feels especially pointed in 2023. That’s the plot of the John David Washington-starring flick The Creator, which just released its first trailer. Check it out below.

Exclusive: Hasbro-owned Entertainment One is undergoing a round of layoffs sources tell Deadline. The reduction is said to impact about 20% of the indie studio’s film and television staff.
“This workforce reduction is part of the ongoing transformational changes Hasbro announced in January to substantially reduce costs and increase growth rates and profitability,” Hasbro spokesperson Roberta Thomson said in a statement to Deadline, declining further comment.
Hasbro’s plan, announced in January, involves cutting 15% of the company’s global workforce this year, or about 1,000 positions.
The eOne layoffs follow Nick Meyer’s announcement last month that he was exiting as the indie studio’s President of Film when his contract ends in June.
They also come as Hasbro is in the final stage of selling a majority stake in the bulk of eOne’s film and television assets. Lionsgate had recently emerged as a frontrunner in the process but...

Possible buyers for the eOne film and TV operation are thought to include Legendary and Lionsgate.
Nick Meyer is leaving his job as president of film at eOne when his contract ends next month, according to a report confirmed by a company source.
The move comes as Hasbro, which acquired the Canada-based international media operation at the start of 2020, explores the sale of the majority of eOne’s film and TV business. Possible buyers are believed to include Legendary and Lionsgate.
Meyer took on his current job in 2018, when eOne acquired the remaining stake in Sierra Pictures and its international sales operation Sierra/Affinity.

Nick Meyer is stepping down as President of Film at Entertainment One (eOne) at the end of his contract in June, Meyer said in a memo to staffers on Friday.
Read the memo below:
Dear Team:
These days, success in our industry, and the excellence we aspire to, hinges on our ability to evolve and balance an ever-changing landscape with the desire to make exceptional movies and support artists on the winding path to reach audiences. As eOne’s relationship with Hasbro moves to its next chapter, I have decided to end my tenure as eOne’s President of Film when my contract ends next month.
It has been an epic run, starting with the founding of Sierra with Marc in 2009 through the subsequent mergers with eOne and Hasbro. Together, we have built a robust film development and production division at eOne by creating both award-winning and blockbuster content that reaches audiences worldwide.

Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.”

As much as Star Trek promises to boldly go where no one has gone before, the franchise has never been afraid to look back at its past. We’ve seen that in appearances by Janice Rand and Khan Noonien Singh in the movies, cameos from most of the original crew in The Next Generation, and even in reimagined characters in the J.J. Abrams movies, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds. So it isn’t much of a surprise that Star Trek: Picard would bring back the rest of Jean-Luc Picard’s team for the third and final season of the beloved Captain’s adventures. But it is surprising to see how showrunner Terry Matalas intends the series to go back even further than the follow-up series that introduced Picard and the Enterprise-d.
Breaking down the series’ latest trailer with Trek Movie, Matalas discussed the importance of the boatswain whistle that opens the teaser.

The 2000 live-action film based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise didn’t go over very well with audiences, but it did earn the Awfully Good treatment and spawn a couple of sequels (2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and 2012’s Dungeons & Dragons 3: The Book of Vile Darkness). Those movies came to us from New Line Cinema / Warner Bros. and Im Global, but now it’s Paramount Pictures’ turn. Though most kudos events are competitive, the annual AFI Awards, honoring 21 film and TV works, proved communal. Sarah Polley chatted with Michelle Williams, Jerry Bruckheimer was deep in conversation with James Cameron, the “Better Call Saul” talent huddled with “Reservation Dogs” and Steven Spielberg enthused about “The Bear” to the show’s team and FX Networks chairman John Landgraf.
The luncheon Jan. 13 at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills was filled with 250 industry heavy-hitters, but the scene-stealer was someone who had no attachment to any of the honored works: Al Pacino, who closed the event with a 10-minute speech that seemed rambling and hilarious, but proved to be pointed and concluded with a bang.
Before the event started, Universal Pictures chairwoman Donna Langley praised the annual gathering to Variety, saying: “It reminds us of the dignity and elegance of the industry as we gather here to celebrate artistry.”

South by Southwest is back for another year of the rootin’-est, tootin’-est, most queso-heavy film festival on the planet, as it invades Austin, Texas, alongside the music component of the festival.
The entire experience is now called the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals and takes place in Austin from March 10-18. If you’ve never been, it is an absolute blast, like Sundance but with better weather, better food and nicer people (though without the skiing and snowboarding). And this year’s line-up is no different, featuring splashy Hollywood premieres, hotly tipped indies and a ton of stuff you’ve never, ever heard of.
The entire thing kicks off with a bang – the premiere of Paramount’s hotly anticipated “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” directed and co-written by the “Game Night” team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
