In 2018, Michelle and Barack Obama's production company Higher Ground signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, the biggest streaming service in the world. The Obamas were set to produce a number of high-profile projects, both scripted and unscripted.
Their first scripted project will premiere on May 9th, and it's not what you might have expected from the former President and First Lady. Bodkin is a dark comedy/mystery/thriller set in a small Irish town, starring comedy legend Will Forte.
What's It About?
True crime podcasters Gilbert (Forte), Dove (Siobhán Cullen), and Emmy (Robyn Cara) are desperately hoping to find a story juicy enough to make their podcast stand out in a crowded market. They decide to head to Ireland, where three strangers once disappeared from the (fictional) small coastal town of Bodkin.
The podcasters come to Bodkin on the festival of Samhain (which one character flippantly describes as 'the Irish Day of the Dead'.

Series creator and showrunner Jez Scharf says that with Netflix’s Bodkin, he wanted to “make a dark comedy about what the reality of making a true crime podcast might be like.” Will Forte stars as the true crime podcaster who travels to a small Irish town and stirs up a hornet’s nest with his investigation.
“It’s fascinating and set in these beautiful locations that only Ireland can provide,” says Forte in the three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette. The new video also features Siobhán Cullen (“Dove”), Robyn Cara (“Emmy”), Chris Walley (“Sean O’Shea”), and David Wilmot (“Seamus”) interview clips.
“Bodkin is a dark comedic thriller about a motley crew of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a quaint, coastal Irish town. But once they start pulling at threads, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.

A podcaster, his assistant, and a journalist travel to Ireland to investigate a cold case in Netflix’s Bodkin. Described as a dark comedic thriller, the trailer reveals that the Irish townsfolk aren’t thrilled about being invaded by a podcast team and definitely aren’t ready to disclose all their secrets to strangers who are determined to dredge up unwelcome memories.
Will Forte stars as Gilbert Power, the podcaster; Robyn Cara plays Gilbert’s assistant, Emmy Sizerghy; and Siobhán Cullen stars as Dove, the investigative journalist who reluctantly joins forces with Gilbert. The cast also includes Chris Walley as Sean O’Shea and David Wilmot as Seamus. The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

The Loudest Voice, Showtime's in-depth depiction of the events that led to the rise of Fox News and the fall of its CEO, Roger Ailes, might never have a sequel. At least, that's what showrunner Alex Metcalf told The Hollywood Reporter when asked — in fact, his reaction was a flat-out no.

Make no mistake, Showtime's The Loudest Voice has but one hero, Gretchen Carlson.
Over the course of seven episodes, the limited series dramatizes the rise and fall of her former boss, Fox News creator Roger Ailes, who arguably did more than any single person to create the deeply fractious political environment that we exist in today. In fact, showrunner Alex Metcalf goes as far as to argue that without Ailes, who's played here by Russell Crowe, there is no Donald Trump. Roger Ailes in 1996 supervised the launch of a multibillion-dollar business few people thought would ever get off the ground. In 2019 he may have a posthumous hand in instigating something equally complex: a ripped-from-the-headlines drama about the media industry, complete with portrayals of people who still help make it run.
If that foray is successful, plenty of similar stories are waiting in the wings.
Ailes, who died in 2017, oversaw the debut and massive growth of Fox News Channel, a creation that both admirers and detractors acknowledge has changed the face of U.S. politics and news. On June 30, Showtime debuts miniseries “The Loudest Voice,” a warts-and-all account of Ailes’ early days building the outlet — and his later years, when former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson’s accusations of sexual harassment forced the network’s parent company to oust him, and sparked a spate of unsavory revelations about internal culture at media...

“The Loudest Voice,” Showtime’s upcoming miniseries about Fox News founder Roger Ailes, is sure to rile up some in conservative circles. Alex Metcalf, the showrunner for the series, told TheWrap what kind of negative reaction he expects.
“We’re so clear about the agenda. We don’t shy away from showing Roger fostering and pushing his agenda, while recognizing that there was an audience that would pay for that,” he said. I don’t expect pushback on the facts, but I do expect pushback on the sensibility.”
The series stars Russell Crowe, in his first major TV role, as Ailes, and is based on former New York magazine reporter Gabriel Sherman’s best-selling book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room.” The miniseries will detail Ailes’ rise to power and how he built Fox News into a cable news behemoth, as well as address the sexual harassment accusations and monetary...

Just when Christian Bale thinks he has the market cornered on eerily accurate transformations into notorious, um, larger-than-life Republicans, Russell Crowe is here to be like, “Hold my beer.”

“We’re way past politics — it’s war,” says Russell Crowe as the former Fox News chairman in the clip for the seven-part series, which is set to debut on Sunday, June 30.
Based on Gabriel Sherman’s best-selling book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” the miniseries will detail Ailes’ rise to power and how he built Fox News into a cable news behemoth, as well as address the sexual harassment accusations and monetary settlements that brought his Fox News reign to an end.

Russell Crowe’s portrayal of the controversial Fox News chief Roger Ailes will be coming to Showtime on Sunday, June 30, the network has announced.
Showtime has also released an unnerving first look trailer for the miniseries, in which Crowe’s Ailes takes over Fox News and starts bending it to his will.
“Here in America, television news is king,” the character says. “We’re gonna give them a vision of the world the way they want it to be…we’re way past politics, it’s war.”
The trailer more than hints at the sexual harassment allegations which brought about Ailes’ downfall, as the character is seen touching Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, played by Naomi Watts, who looks extremely uncomfortable with his actions.
The series is based on Gabriel Sherman’s bestselling book, “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” and tells the story of Ailes and his rise and fall at Fox News.

The series focuses primarily on the past decade in which Ailes arguably became the Republican Party’s de facto leader, while flashing back to defining events in Ailes’ life, including an initial meeting with Richard Nixon on the set of The Mike Douglas Show that gave birth to Ailes’ political career and the sexual harassment accusations and settlements that brought his Fox News reign to an end. Naomi Watts has been cast as Gretchen Carlson in the upcoming Showtime limited series about former Fox News head Roger Ailes.
Watts joins previously announced cast member Russell Crowe, who will play Ailes. Carlson rose to prominence over a decade ago at Fox News, first as a co-anchor at “Fox and Friends” before going on to anchor her own show, “The Real Story.” She then became the first of multiple women to file a sexual harassment suit against Ailes after leaving Fox News.
The casting keeps Watts in business with Showtime, with the actress having recently appeared in the premium cabler’s revival of “Twin Peaks.” Watts is also known for her roles in films like “Mulholland Drive,” “I Heart Huckabees,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” “St. Vincent,” “The Ring,” “King Kong, and “J. Edgar.” Watts also earned Academy Award nominations for her role in “21 Grams” and “The Impossible.

Showtime has ordered an eight-episode limited series starring Russell Crowe as the late Fox News chief Roger Ailes. Based on writer Gabriel Sherman’s book “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” the limited series will tell the story of Ailes and his fall from atop Fox News amid sexual harassment allegations. Sherman co-wrote the first episode of the limited series with Tom McCarthy.
“In many ways, the collision between the media and politics has come to define the world we live in today,” said Showtime Networks president and CEO David Nevins. “We’ve seen this phenomenon depicted on screen as far back as the story of Charles Foster Kane, and it finds contemporary embodiment in the rise and fall of Roger Ailes. With Russell Crowe in the lead role, this limited series promises to be a defining story for this era.”
The project would mark the first major U.S.
