Actress Dorothy Malone, who starred in the primetime soap opera Peyton Place, died Friday in her hometown of Dallas. She was age 93.
Malone died in an assisted living center from natural causes days before her 94th birthday, said her daughter, Mimi Vanderstraaten.
After 11 years of mostly roles as loving sweethearts and wives, the brunette actress decided she needed to gamble on her career instead of playing it safe. She fired her agent, hired a publicist, dyed her hair blonde and sought a new image.
"I came up with a conviction that most of the winners in this business became stars overnight by playing shady dames with sex appeal," she recalled in 1967. She welcomed the offer for Written on the Wind, in which she played an alcoholic nymphomaniac who tries to steal Rock Hudson from his wife, Lauren Bacall.
"And I've been unfaithful or drunk or oversexed almost ever since— on the screen,...

The book was raw & dirty, and did you read what that girl did with that guy on page 167? Racking up a stack of Oscar nominations, Peyton Place became one of the big hits of its year, launched the careers of several young actors, and proved that Hollywood could pasteurize most any so-called un-filmable book. Lana Turner is the nominal star but the leading actress is Diane Varsi, in her film debut.

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

Fans can now pick up a brand-new edition of the critically acclaimed novel Jago from Titan Books and other major retailers. We recently chatted with author Kim Newman about his horror novel and what awaits readers around that next dark corner.
Amanda Dyar: For those who haven't checked out the book yet--can you tell us briefly about the story and what horror fans have to look forward to?
Kim Newman: It’s about weird things happening in an English village, focused on a cult led by a charismatic, would-be messiah character with enormous psychic powers.
Amanda Dyar: What were your inspirations for your new novel Jago?
Kim: It’s not actually new, but a reissue – it was my third published novel under my own name, appearing in 1991. It was the first novel I began writing, though it changed from its beginnings, and a sub-plot spun off to...

Following on from last week’s Top 10 that looked at films that should have won the Best Picture award, for my final Oscar themed list I’ve turned my attentions to some exceptional performances that were robbed of their appropriate gong. The Academy Awards seem to ruffle a lot of feathers – particularly in the big awards such as Best Picture, Best Leading/Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Director and so on – and the ‘political’ or biased nature of the members’ votes can often be felt. This is habitually so within the main foursome of awards, where opinions are strong and campaigning is passionate – both from the studios and the public.
As I keep everything crossed that who and what I want wins at tonight’s ceremony, read on to discover the 10 nominated performances that in my opinion should have received the accolade…

Scribe Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal is teaming with Sandra Bullock and her Fortis Films on the indie biopic Grace. The project is based on the life of scribe Grace Metalious, whose first novel was the 1956 tome Peyton Place, an inspiration for both a television show and a feature film. The success of such a unique book for the time period brought Metalious many rewards, but it also led to a broken marriage, family problems and alcohol addiction that eventually took her life less than 10 years later. Bullock and her Fortis Films are producing along with Carol Baum.
