In horror, the babysitter is typically the character who protects her young ward from madmen and other dangers, but Dorothy Mills completely subverts the concept; Agnès Merlet’s 2008 film sees a disturbed sitter as the main threat to a child’s safety. This Irish chiller, however, upholds other genre traditions, including sending a city dweller to a small town where the people are ruled by their unusual customs, xenophobia and extreme faith. As the heedless outsider learns more about the infamous title character and the other residents, she quickly realizes this will not be an open-and-shut case of child abuse.
Dorothy Mills was written by Merlet and Juliette Sales, and this bleak story was originally set in Scotland before ultimately relocating to Ireland. This rural “fish out of water” mystery is in the vein of The Wicker Man, minus the folk-horror element, but there’s still something weird going on...

Tribeca 2011 marks the world premier of Agnès Merlet's (Dorothy Mills) intriguing looking teen drama about living with powers beyond your control. It sort of reminds me of a kitchen sink Heroes, though I doubt the characters in Merlet's film band together to fight any super villains.
Here's the beef:
The Furlong men all were blessed or cursed with unique abilities. Ten-year-old James Furlong's father was able to shut off all electricity around him when he was scared, and his grandfather went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. James' mother died while giving birth to him, and as he experiments to figure out what his ability is, he unintentionally causes the death of his father and grandmother. Then, when he's sent to a reformatory school and sparks a strange illness that wipes out all the children who bullied him, James flees to a cottage in the woods to live a life of isolation.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

This is easily one of the best weeks for DVD releases we've seen in a long while in fact, as I write this, I realize that this post almost works to recap of a lot of the high points of last years cinematic offerings. So, I suggest you grab a coffee and take a few minutes to just digest all the great titles, read some of our past reviews, and look at some trailers before you take a trip through any of the amazon links and start browsing.
First and foremost, we've got Fernando Meirelles' somewhat controversial adaptation of Blindness (review) hitting store shelves. Many people Loved this film ,and in a lot of ways I really like it as well. It certainly pulls no punches and all the actors are amazing (particularly Julian Moore) but there was still something about the movie that felt unfinished and small (not "intimate" mind you,...

Agnès Merlet's taut, atmospheric, and creepy as all hell looking psychological horror Dorothy Mills is up for pre-order on R1 DVD. The French/Irish co-production the pic has garnered excellent reviews on it’s turn around the festival circuits. With a stunning performance by Jenn Murray in the lead, Dorothy stars Carice van Houten, Gary Lewis, Eamonn Owens, Gavin O'Connor, Niamh Shaw and Charlene McKenna. Synopsis: Dorothy Mills is suspected of assaulting a young baby in a contemporary but timeless rural village...

I can't express how excited I am for Agnès Merlet's Dorothy Mills, which I hope is as cool as it looks. Today we finally got our hands on the trailer for the film, along with the international one sheet. Hitting theaters internationally this August, the Weinstein Company will release the film on DVD sometime in the near future. Jane Morton, a psychiatrist in mourning after the accidental death of her son, is assigned the case of Dorothy Mills, a 15-year-old girl from a small Irish island, accused of attempting to murder a baby in her charge. Read on for the trailer and one sheet.

Today we scored a look at a few new stills from the Weinstein Company's Dorothy Mills, which we're dying to see here at Bloody-Disgusting (please give us a release date!). Deeply religious, and believed by the villagers to possess supernatural powers, the terrified Dorothy swears she never touched the child. Moved by the girl's fragile, vulnerable state, Jane makes a diagnosis of multiple personality disorder, until the day that Dorothy speaks to her with the voice of her dead son...
