The family of “ER” actor Vanessa Marquez filed a federal suit Thursday alleging the officer-involved shooting of Marquez involved a civil rights violation.
The actor was killed in her home in 2018. Officers were called to the scene by paramedics and Marquez was having seizures when they arrived. Approximately 90 minutes into the situation, she aimed a Bb gun at the police, which ultimately resulted in the shooting, said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza after the incident.
The suit, brought against the city of South Pasadena, Calif., the former chief of police and some officers involved, claims that police caused the confrontation by ignoring paramedics’ decision that Marquez had the right to decline transportation to a hospital.
A friend made the call for paramedics to check on Marquez, with the suit specifying that the request was only for “medical assistance,” not for an armed group of officers to respond to the call.

South Pasadena city leaders cautioned the public against making preliminary judgements about the fatal shooting of “ER” actress Vanessa Marquez at her home on Thursday.
In a statement released on Saturday, city officials said two separate, independent investigations are being conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office into the officer-involved shooting.
“We believe our officers acted appropriately under a tragic set of circumstances,” South Pasadena City Manager Stephanie DeWolfe said in a press release. “We are asking the public to respect the investigative process and allow the Sheriff’s Department and D.A.’s office to gather and release the facts.”

Vanessa Marquez, a series regular actress on NBC’s hit drama “ER” from 1994-1997, was shot and killed by a South Pasadena Pd officer during a welfare check early Thursday afternoon. She was 49.
During the welfare check at the 1100 Block of Fremont Avenue, Marquez was having seizures and possibly suffering from mental health issues, Lieutenant Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau told TheWrap. After more than 90 minutes of officers trying to convince an uncooperative Marquez to seek care, Mendoza says the actress and South Pasadena resident pulled out a weapon and pointed it at police officers. Though it was later identified to be a Bb gun, Mendoza said it was a replica of a semi-automatic handgun, and police believed the weapon to be a real firearm.
An officer or officers shot Mendoza, who was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
