We’re told that the first live- action feature film super-heroine was the marvelous Helen Slater, whose fine presence redeems this last film in the Salkind Superman franchise. CineSavant likes it for the right reasons — his very young kids adored it — but can see its turnip screenwriting and frayed corners showing through. The release combines a 125-minute Blu-ray with an overstuffed 139-minute DVD.

James Bond wielded the knife with obvious skill. He approached, blade barely glinting in the light, and pounced, the knife coming down to join the awaiting fork. "I usually eat fruit," he said simply, "but today I'm in the mood for a good English breakfast." And with that, he began his meal. Okay, so it's not stopping arch-nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld from triggering World War III, or preventing Auric Goldfinger from turning the gold in Fort Knox radioactive, but it was my experience with agent 007 back in 1994. At the time, I was Senior Editor at Cinescape and somehow we ended up with the rights to do the magazine on the making of the 17th James Bond movie — and the first one to star Pierce Brosnan — GoldenEye. Even more incredibly, I was the guy chosen to fly to England to spend a few days on the set at Leavesden Studios, later...

Cinema Retro has received the following press release:
In 2017, after ten years of service, MI6 Confidential has introduced a new special format: a limited-run 100-page perfect bound issue of the magazine taking a deep dive into one particular facet of the franchise. This first special issue was contributed by Oscar-winning art department veteran Peter Lamont.
Peter Lamont spent more than 40 years working in art departments of the James Bond films. From draughtsman to production designer; from Goldfinger to Casino Royale, Peter worked on every picture but one. One of the films for which he has collected a great deal of documents and has many fond memories is Roger Moore's debut as 007, Live And Let Die.
A lot of that material could not be squeezed into his recent autobiography, so Peter came to MI6 Confidential with an offer too good to refuse. In this special 100-page perfect bound edition of MI6 Confidential magazine,...

Inspired by Gerry Anderson, Derek Meddings and Irwin Allen comes Ultraquest. And here's how you can help get it going...
Now this looks really interesting. Matthew Teevan is a filmmaker who’s worked primarily in animation for the bulk of his career, working on films such as The Prince Of Egypt, The Book Of Life, Gnomeo & Juliet and more. But he’s now turning his attention to a project of his own, one inspired by the likes of Gerry Anderson and Derek Meddings.
He’s crowdfunding Ultraquest, a 30 minute mix of live action and visual effects. It’s an ambitious project he’s put together, and some of the pre-production artwork gives an idea of the detail he’s gone to. But he needs your help and support.
Teevan is trying to raise the £25,000 he needs to realise the film, and he’s around 10% of the way there, with a fortnight to go.

I guess there are plenty of adults now too young to remember when Christopher Reeve made his debut as The Man of Steel. It was a massive hit across the full spectrum of moviegoers. Warners is taking good care of everyone’s favorite undocumented visitor from Planet Krypton, and has assembled two separate cuts of his big-screen premiere.

The Thunderbirds are back.
Season Two of the revived Amazon’s Thunderbirds Are Go continues the adventures of the family of heroes, International Rescue. The series highlights the five brave Tracy brothers and their covert operative Kayo and how they pilot their remarkable, cutting-edge Thunderbird vehicles to perform near-impossible rescue mission, from the depths of the oceans to the highest reaches of space.
Produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures with Weta Workshop, the series is made with a mixture of CGI animation and live-action model sets—paying tribute to the old fans of the shows and attracting a new generation to the Thunderbirds.
Lrm had a phone interview earlier this month with voice actor David Graham, who is reprising his role as Agent Parker from the original series. We had an extensive talk over the show—both the original and the new show. It was also fun to reminisce...

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.

Timeless Media have released the epic 1976 adventure film Shout at the Devil as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. The movie, produced by Michael Klinger and directed by Peter Hunt, is an big budget affair very much in the style of John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, which was released the previous year. Both films follow the antics of a couple of charismatic rogues in exotic settings. The film is based on the novel by author Wilbur Smith, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The movie was shot in between Roger Moore's second and third James Bond films, The Man With the Golden Gun and The Spy Who Loved Me and boasts a "who's who" of Eon Productions talent. Peter Hunt had edited the early Bond films and directed On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Ironically, Moore and Hunt never worked on a 007 film together but in...

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...
Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.
I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications.

It's not clear yet what form the Oscars' tribute to the James Bond franchise will take. On Friday, the Academy announced it had booked Shirley Bassey for her first-ever Oscar show appearance, so at the very least, we're likely get to hear her belt out one or more of the three Bond movie theme songs she recorded ("Moonraker," "Diamonds Are Forever" and of course, "Goldfinger"). We also know Adele will be on hand to sing her currently nominated theme to "Skyfall." Beyond that, Oscar host Seth MacFarlane has made a promo clip where he plays a bartender who makes fun of James Bond (Pierce Brosnan, in an archival clip) for the distinctive way he orders his martini. Otherwise, there are few clues as to what shape the tribute will take, though there is a rumor that all six men who've played 007 -- Daniel Craig, Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, George Lazenby...

Children's TV series to return in 2015, 50 years after it launched, and will be made with New Zealand special effects team
Thunderbirds are back! The children's TV series will return to ITV in 2015, 50 years after Thunderbird 1 first launched from under the swimming pool on Tracy Island and Parker drove Lady Penelope around in a pink Rolls-Royce, number plate FAB1.
The new series, which has the working title Thunderbirds Are Go!, will be made with the New Zealand special effects studio that worked on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Thunderbirds first appeared on ITV in 1965 featuring Gerry Anderson's famous "supermarionation" puppet techniques. Anderson, whose other TV shows included Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 and Space 1999, died on 26 December last year, aged 83.

Mark pays his respects to the achievements of Thunderbirds, Stingray and Space: 1999 creator Gerry Anderson, who sadly died last week.
I was born in 1961, which means that while I don't recall the earliest Anderson series, The Adventures Of Twizzle or Torchy The Battery Boy, but I do remember watching Four-Feather Falls and Supercar.
However, it was Fireball Xl-5 that really engulfed my imagination, and probably introduced me to the idea of distant worlds and alien races. And in doing so, it also triggered off something wonderful in my head, and I immediately fell in love with all things science fictional and technological.
What's slightly depressing now, and even at the time, was that other parts of the TV and film industry rather turned their noses up at Gerry's productions, referring to him as 'that Puppet guy', or other equally dismissive terms. This was entirely at...

Gerry Anderson, creator of Thunderbirds, Space: 1999, Supercar, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Joe 90, UFO, Fireball XL5, Stingray, and many other science fiction and fantasy shows, has died at the age of 83.
Gerry was best know for his “Supermarionation” series, featuring detailed marionettes and a science-fiction based storyline. His ex-wife Sylvia collaborated frequently with him, most famously voicing Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward in Thunderbirds. The shows were a first step for many well-known actors and creators, including Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny in the early James Bond films), character actors Shane Rimmer and Jaremy Wilkin (Blake’s 7) and special effects master Derek Meddings (Star Wars and the James Bond franchise). He made successful forays into live action as well, with the series Space: 1999 and UFO, and the feature film Journey to the Far Side of the Sun.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming well underway on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
With James Bond well established as a worldwide phenomenon raking in countless millions at the box-office, the tenth film in the series, The Spy Who Loved Me proved unexpectedly problematic in its journey to the screen and marked the longest gap between films since the series began. Due to personal financial issues Bond producer Harry Saltzman decided to sell his 50% stake in Danjaq S.A., the company he had established with Albert R. Broccoli to produce the Bond series. Back on November 23 we reported that Fringe star Joshua Jackson was set to star in an adaptation of UK television producer Gerry Anderson's 1970 live action series, UFO. Jackson would star as Col. Paul Foster, played by Michael Billington in the original series. Today we're learning from the website Forbidden Planet that Heroes star Ali Larter is being sought to take on the role of Col. In a new interview with Forbidden Planet, the adaptation's director, Matthew Gratzner, discusses the new film in some detail, and also talks about his desire to see Larter — who is currently the frontrunner for the role — in the project.

Actor Joshua Jackson is set to hop on UFO, a feature adaptation of the 1970-71 British cult TV series.
The Vancouver-born Jackson, who currently stars in the Fox television series Fringe, will play Paul Foster, a test pilot for an organization called S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization) which defends Earth from aliens who abduct humans and harvest their body parts. Col. Paul Foster was played in the original ITV series by Michael Billington, which also starred the late Ed Bishop as Cmdr. Ed Straker, the head of S.H.A.D.O.
The UFO movie will be produced by Henri M. Kessler and Avi Haas, from a script by Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek. Matthew Gratzner, who served as visual effects supervisor on such films as Iron Man, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and the upcoming Shutter Island, will be making his directorial debut.

Paul Foster was played in the original ITV series by Michael Billington, which also starred the late Ed Bishop as Cmdr. Ed Straker, the head of S.H.A.D.O.
