Warning: contains Alf Stewart spoilers.
Just because you’ve lost touch with someone doesn’t mean you don’t want to know when they fall into a sinkhole. That the point of Facebook – for keeping an eye on the triumphs and misfortunes of people you once knew but now can’t be bothered to talk to. Soap characters though, aren’t on Facebook. The closest you can get to nosing on their timeline is checking out the front covers of TV listings magazines in supermarket queues to see who’s been getting married/murdered or, commonly, both.
It’s shameful when you think about it. Soap characters are people with whom we probably spent half an hour a day, five days a week, for years and years and years. Then adulthood calls and pouf! It’s sayonara Harold, goodnight Madge. Take Alf Stewart of Home and Away. Once, the man was your straw-hatted rock.

Veteran Home and Away director Arnie Custo and series producer Lucy Addario describe how cast and crew are adapting to the Covid-safe guidelines.
Plus, Custo’s tips for emerging directors. First up are the responses from the director who has been with the Seven Network show since 2013.
Q: How are you, the cast and fellow crew members adjusting to the new health and safety protocols?
A:Very well all things considered. We have great nurses and safety officers keeping us vigilant and the crew are doing a fabulous job getting the job done whilst maintaining distance from each other. The cast have been wonderful as well and very understanding of any changes we make in terms of blocking scenes to keep distance.
Q: I imagine it may be difficult to stop some reflexive actions like touching colleagues or props?

One of Australia’s early horror films manages to combine spirituality, conservation, Indigenous culture, Ray Meagher and a 25-foot crocodile
The success of gnarly genre films such as Wolf Creek and countless splatterific Ozploitation pics that played at drive-ins in the 70s and 80s no doubt fed the perception that Australian cinema has always been a stomping ground for horror. In fact, no Australian horror films – not a single one – existed before the 1970s and, since then, local audiences have had an on/off relationship with them.
Partly a result of this, and partly a reflection of the technical challenges associated with the genre, there isn’t a wide selection of locally made creature features despite our national landscapes and animals providing perfect environments and antagonists for nature-themed human-devouring spectacles.

The 69-year-old actor has been in the soap since the first episode aired in 1988, but he feels that time has flown by and he still hasn't tired of his famous role. He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''It hasn't felt like 27 years, although when you get up in the morning and shave, it does look like 27 years then.'' Ray is the longest serving cast member of the Australian soap - which airs on Channel 5 in the UK - and has become a national treasure in...

Home And Away veteran Ray Meagher was the toast of Australian TV on Sunday after taking home top honours at the 2010 Logie Awards.
The 65-year-old soap star, who has played Alf Stewart on the series for 22 years, was presented with the Gold Logie after he was nominated in the category for the first time at the TV Week Logie Awards, which celebrates the best in TV Down Under.
Meagher saw off competition from Packed To The Rafters actress Rebecca Gibney as well as his Home And Away co-star Esther Anderson to win the prize.
He joked to the crowd, "These things have never meant much to me over the years, really, mainly because I've never held one. All of a sudden they seem unbelievably important...
"Just being in constant work for the 40 years I've been in the business has just been a wonderful reward. And certainly the last 22 years on Home and Away is more than enough reward. This is just like the icing on the cake."
TV comedy/drama Packed To The Rafters scooped three trophies, while MasterChef Australia also struck gold with two Logies. Game show Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation was named both the Most Popular and Most Outstanding Light Entertainment programme.
Veteran performer Bert Newton was given a standing ovation as he kicked off the Melbourne event, which he hosted just days after it was announced his actor son Matthew had been admitted to rehab to treat undisclosed personal issues.
