Exclusive: Coming off a two-season run on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Molly Kearney has been tapped to star in CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv, from Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV and CBS Studios. As they make the transition from late-night to primetime with Dmv, Kearney is joining another SNL alum, Tim Meadows, who had been previously cast in the pilot alongside Colin From Accounts co-creator and star Harriet Dyer.
Prolific comedy director Trent O’Donnell (Ghosts) is set to direct and executive produce the Dmv pilot, written by Klein based on author Katherine Heiny’s short story.
Dmv is a workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most: the Dmv. Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.

“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”
The magazine wasn’t alone in expressing concern for the long-running comedy series during its 19th season. The New York Daily News noted that SNL would have to try and “find a desperately needed fresh sense of identity” following the loss of Dana Carvey and Chris Rock, and the announced departures of Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney and Rob Schneider.
So EW offered up “20 suggestions” for “how to fix the show.” Looking back at this list, it’s amazing how spot-on some ideas are in retrospect — while others are laughably dated and arguably awful.
For starters, writer Bruce Fretts (who sadly passed away in 2020) suggested handing over the reins of Weekend Update to David Spade,...

Colin From Accounts co-creator and star Harriet Dyer has been tapped as a lead opposite Tim Meadows in CBS‘ single-camera comedy pilot Dmv, from Dana Klein, Kapital Entertainment, TrillTV and CBS Studios. Dyer’s casting would not interfere with her duties on the well-received Paramount+ comedy series Colin From Accounts, also produced by CBS Studios; the dates have been worked out so she will be able to do both should Dmv go to series and Colin From Accounts gets renewed for a third season.

CBS’ comedy pilot Dmv is starting to staff up.
Tim Meadows will star in the single-camera show, which comes from CBS Studios and creator Dana Klein (Friends, CBS’ 9Jkl). As the title implies, Dmv is set in a department of motor vehicles office and follows the people who work there.
Saturday Night Live and The Goldbergs alum Meadows will play Gregg, a former high school teacher who now works as a Dmv examiner. Jonathan Zaurin’s deeply impressive crime drama is a striking exploration of guilt and redemption. Here’s our Derelict review.
We’ve been following Jonathan Zaurin’s film Derelict for a while now. The first trailer emerged earlier this year and we were immediately hooked by the black and white cinematography and were very excited to learn the film would be premiering at FrightFest 2024.
Naturally, I had to check the film out, but I’ve been waiting to write the review, just letting it simmer in my mind. I can’t say Derelict was what I expected it to be from the trailer or even the film’s opening act, but I was very, very impressed.
The film opens with home videos, vibrant with colour, introducing us to a pair of young girls and their dad. These scenes of happiness are contrasted by black-and-white scenes of a crime scene, with...

Say this for Saturday Night Live — if performers don’t have the goods, they don’t stick around for long. A number of talented comics didn’t get asked back for even a second season, including future stars Sarah Silverman, Jenny Slate and Ben Stiller. But just because comics are good enough to earn multiple seasons doesn’t mean they can’t overstay their welcome. Here are four SNL performers who milked the show for all it was worth…

A man spins a story in a doctor’s waiting room, sparking a fairy tale of loss and desperation
Film-makers Claire Coache and Lisle Turner are a couple who survived the horrific experience of losing two babies during pregnancy: one to a medical termination and one to miscarriage. With Cold, they transmute this trauma into a near-wordless performance of allegorical art, one that was filmed during lockdown first in an empty theatre and is now being distributed online for free in order to make the subject accessible to everyone. That’s both very noble and savvy because this discreet, extremely intimate film starring two barely known actors might have struggled to pull in paying customers considering the subject is so painful.
Janet Etuk and Jacob Meadows play a couple first met waiting in a hospital to be seen by a doctor, stressed and worried about the child she’s carrying.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been criticized for his remarks in a case about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The criticism stems from Thomas’ questioning and his wife’s alleged involvement in the conspiracy surrounding the events leading up to the riot.
In the Supreme Court hearing on a case related to the Capitol riot, Thomas raised the question of whether the federal government had previously charged individuals with obstruction of an official proceeding in the context of violent protests. This statement received backlash on social media, with some critics interpreting it as downplaying the severity of the insurrection.
Former CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin criticized Thomas, saying that his wife’s alleged connection to the conspiracy influenced his handling of the case. Thomas’ wife, Virginia Thomas, had conversations with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, where she urged him to overturn the 2020 election results. Virginia raised funds...

On Wednesday, an Arizona grand jury indicted 18 of Donald Trump’s allies for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.
Boris Epshteyn, a former White House aide who has remained one of Trump’s closest advisers, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows are three of 18 indicted allies. Their names were redacted in documents released, but court officials confirmed that they were included in the group charged.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) announced the indictment Wednesday night. She focused on the 11 people who acted as pro-Trump electors in Arizona.
“A state grand jury made up of everyday regular Arizonans has now handed down felony indictments for all 11 Republican electors as well as several others connected to this scheme,” Mayes stated.
“These are serious indictments, but this is the first hurdle the state must pass in our constitutional criminal justice system,...

Hot on the heels of an episode that saw host Kristen Wiig and a cadre of guest stars participate in a series of warmly received recurring sketches, Saturday Night Live looks to be at it again.
According to a show insider, another classic recurring character is set to return tonight—and it won’t be played by host Ryan Gosling or anyone on the show’s current cast.
With that tantalizing tip, it’s on to the speculation portion of this post. Between the news of the week, characters Ryan Gosling interacted with in his first two hosting stints, and one other interesting breadcrumb left by the show, which characters seem most likely to make an appearance?
One obvious but somewhat probably unlikely possibility is an appearance from Tim Meadows as O.J. Simpson. Meadows played Simpson throughout the show’s 20th season when Simpson’s trial was a recurring sketch.

You’d be forgiven if you thought butter was a carb, just like it’s totally understandable if you didn’t know the new “Mean Girls” is a musical.
Paramount, which released the movie over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, chose not to explicitly market it as a song-and-dance spectacle, according to the studio’s president of global marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock.
“To start off saying musical, musical, musical, you have the potential to turn off audiences,” he says. “I want everyone to be equally excited.”
The PG-13 film triumphed in its box office debut with $33 million over the four-day weekend. But despite the cultural prominence of Tina Fey’s 2004 comedy, which propelled Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried to stardom, Weinstock’s job – selling the masses on (and clearing up any confusion about) “Mean Girls” – was trickier than trying to make fetch happen.

Have you ever wondered what the cast of classic TV shows made? While they certainly didn’t earn what current-day stars are earning, plenty of big contracts floated around during the golden age of television. The cast of The Honeymooners was paid pretty well when all things are considered, but there were some pretty big salary discrepancies on the set. So, how much are they making, and what would that look like in today’s money?
Jackie Gleason made the most out of the cast, followed by Art Carney
Jackie Gleason, the famed actor best known for portraying Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners, was the creative mastermind behind the series. Because he came onto the show as the resident creative with the name recognition to draw a crowd, he understandably made much more than anyone else. According to several sources, Jackie Gleason’s CBS contract was worth $11 million, but that wasn’t his money,...

Joyce Randolph, who played Trixie, the wife of Art Carney’s goofy sewer worker Ed Norton, on the classic sitcom The Honeymooners, has died. She was 99.
Randolph, the last surviving member of the famous foursome that also included the stars Jackie Gleason (as Brooklyn bus driver Ralph Kramden) and Audrey Meadows (as Ralph’s level-headed wife, Alice), died Saturday at her home in New York, her son, Randy, told TMZ.
Gleason spotted Randolph doing a commercial for Clorets and hired her to play Trixie on his DuMont network variety show Cavalcade of Stars, which premiered in 1951 and featured the Kramdens and the Nortons — neighbors in a rundown Bensonhurst apartment building — in a recurring skit.

Tina Fey has revealed the one stipulation that she and Tim Meadows had about reprising their roles in the new Mean Girls movie.
It’s been nearly 20 years since Fey and Meadows initially starred as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively, in the 2004 film. But they decided to return as their iconic characters in the new movie musical adaptation, based on the 2018 Broadway musical, as long as they didn’t have to sing.
“I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it,” Fey recently told People magazine. “So I called Tim and I was like, ‘Will you do it? I’ll do it if you do it.’ And we said, ‘Yes, as long as we don’t have to sing.'”
The actress-comedian added of working with Meadows again, “It was fun.

A federal appeals court has rejected Mark Meadows’ bid to move his Georgia election interference case out of state court.
The court ruled that Meadows, who served as chief of staff under Donald Trump, will have to stand trial in Atlanta. While Meadows could appeal his ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, the case is still likely to be held in Fulton County.
Meadows thought he would get a more favorable jury pool in federal court and argued that his role as chief of staff allowed him to do almost anything on Trump’s behalf.
Meadow’s appeal was heard by Chief Judge William Pryor and Circuit Judges Robin Rosenbaum and Nancy Abudu. All three voted to reject his plea.
“Meadows cannot point to any authority for influencing state officials with allegations of election fraud,” Pryor wrote regarding his decision. “At bottom, whatever the chief of staff’s role...

Donald Trump can still be restricted in what he says witnesses as well as lawyers and court staff, and their families, in his federal election conspiracy case, an appellate court ruled on Friday.
The three-judge panel largely upheld Judge Tanya Chutkan’s gag order in the proceedings, with the exception that the restrictions do not apply to Special Counsel Jack Smith, a frequent Trump target who he has labeled “deranged.”
The judges also set parameters for the type of restrictions on Trump’s comments about attorneys and court staffers, writing that it applied in cases where his statements “are made with the intent to materially interfere with, or to cause others to materially interfere with, counsel’s or staff’s work in this criminal case, or with the knowledge that such interference is highly likely to result.”

"Jaws" is an immortal classic, but decades on from its 1975 release, several of the movie's principal players have left us. Peter Benchley, the source novel's author and the film's co-writer turned shark conservationist, passed in 2006. Robert Shaw, who played the shark-hating fisherman Quint, died in 1978, a mere three years after the premiere of "Jaws." Shaw still left his mark on film history thanks to his masterful monologue about Quint's experience during the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
Of course, the biggest winner of "Jaws" was director Steven Spielberg, who entered the production of "Jaws" as a scrappy young upstart and turned it into his first rung while climbing the Hollywood lader. Spielberg is the most influential American filmmaker of his generation and the ones that have followed. He's never lost his magic touch either, so we can only hope and pray he stays with us even longer.

Since the summer, Donald Trump’s legal teams have been wracked by one abiding fear: betrayal.
On one front, the former president’s inner circle has fretted about how many co-defendants in the Fulton County criminal case — or co-conspirators in the special counsel probes — might turn against him, accept a plea deal, and cooperate with the prosecutors. But lingering beneath the fear of disloyalty lies another, darker fear about whether anyone anyone still working in, or close to, Trump’s inner orbit could already secretly be working with prosecutors.
