In recent years we have seen a number of films that are clearly inspired by the works of the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. Just last year, not one but two films were released that carried visual and narrative traits that were all too common in the work of the master of suspense. Both Side Effects and Stoker transformed the idea of a Hitchcock thriller for modern audiences while still clearly letting their respected director’s voices be heard.
This certainly isn’t the case with Matthew McDuffie and Arie Posin’s story of a mournful widow. As the film opens, we see Nikki (Annette Bening) coping with the death of her husband Garrett (Ed Harris). Flashbacks to happier times still haunt her as she attempts to move on five years after his death. When visiting an art museum one afternoon she sees what appears to be her husband sitting in front of her.

What would happen if you saw someone with an uncanny resemblance to a late friend or family member? How would you react? Filmmaker Arie Posin’s mother had a close encounter with a man who looked eerily like her late husband, and the director was so intrigued by this story that he wrote a screenplay, with Matthew McDuffie, about the peculiar situation.
Titled The Face of Love, Posin’s film opened in theatres last Friday after a festival run that included stops in Toronto and San Sebastian. It tells the story of Nikki (Annette Bening), a widow who falls in love with an artist named Tom (Ed Harris), who looks exactly like her late husband.
Posin is an Israeli-born director who lived in Canada before moving to Los Angeles and heading to film school at the University of Southern California. The Face of Love marks his second film, after 2005’s coming-of-age indie comedy The Chumscrubber.

If The Face of Love proves anything, it is that Annette Bening is still one of the finest American actors working today. In Arie Posin’s new drama, which boasts shades of Douglas Sirk and an attempted Hitchcockian suspense, she gives everything to the role of Nikki Lostrom, a lonesome widow who pursues a relationship with a man who has an uncanny resemblance to her late husband.
In the opening scene, Nikki sits, sullen and anguished, by the pool of her immaculate Los Angeles home, gripping a glass of wine as she remembers finding her husband Garrett (Ed Harris) dead, strewn on the beach after drowning during a trip to Mexico. Distracted by these harrowing memories, she drops the wine glass. Picking up the pieces of broken glass, Nikki does not even grimace, even when she grips the shards so tightly her hand starts bleeding. Bening is a fearless actor...

“The Face of Love” (opening March 7 in Los Angeles) traffics in the kind of audacious premise — five years after her husband dies, a woman meets his exact look-alike — that Pedro Almodóvar could have really turned into something provocative and meaningful. In the hands of “Chumscrubber” director Arie Posin (who co-wrote with Matthew McDuffie), the results are gooey and half-baked, with plot contrivances butting up against genteel design porn. Annette Bening stars as Nikki, a “stager” of houses; she makes them look lived-in so as to attract potential buyers. Her own home is a gorgeous little L.A. jewel...

We received some crucial casting news regarding Arie Posin‘s The Look of Love back in the dog days of February, when Annette Bening jumped in to replace Diane Keaton in the role of “Niki, a widow who falls for a new man who looks identical to her deceased husband.” In the same report, we also learned that Robin Williams, who’s fallen off the beaten path a bit since his committed turn in the much-discussed World’s Greatest Dad, hopped on board as well. Meanwhile, Ed Harris, who plays the “dead ringer for [Bening's] deceased husband,” has been on board from the beginning.
This latest piece of casting information concerns names that aren’t quite as high-profile as the aforementioned stars, but it’s worth noting nevertheless. The additions include Amy Brenneman (the Robert De Niro love interest from Michael Mann‘s Heat) and Jess Weixler, who’ll play Bening‘s daughter in the film.

Working Women: Keaton & HBO Try Again, New Development Deal; Rhimes Sells Period Drama Gilded Lillys
While Tilda met an unfortunate fate at HBO, the cable channel just signed another development deal with Tilda's would-be star, Diane Keaton. (Here's why the Nikki Finke-inspired series got the axe.) What kind of vehicle will HBO create for Keaton? We like the idea of a starring series vehicle, even if she is one of the few actresses still working in their 60s. Coming up are small-scale films from Lawrence Kasdan (Darling Companion), Justin Zackham (The Wedding) and the Matthew McDuffie and Arie Posen scripted The Look of Love. It-girl Emma Stone may have dubbed her her idol (she told Vanity Fair she admires Keaton as “one of the most covered-up actresses of all time”), but Keaton is still one of a kind. Shonda Rhimes, ...

The very last role in which anyone familiar with his career would cast actor Ed Harris would be the lead in a comedic romance, never-the-less, this is exactly what is set to happen with the announcement that he is to star alongside Diane Keaton in the The Look of Love.
Few on-screen couples could have had such divergent personas; Keaton having made her name as the beautiful love interest of the chronically neurotic Woody Allen and the woman who challenged the authority of the mighty Michael Corleone as Al Pacino’s wife in The Godfather; whereas Harris’ demented blue eyed stare made him the go to man to play shadowy secret service employees in films like Nixon and History of Violence.
Keaton will play ”a widow who, several years after the death of her husband, mysteriously meets a man who looks exactly like her deceased husband” in what is described as a ‘complex’ love story.

Is it just me or will '80s pop songs start becoming the new trend of movie titles? It makes sense with "Take Me Home Tonight," but "The Look of Love" has a whole other meaning in it's title (and does not have anything to do with the band ABC). Anyways, the Arie Posin ("The Chumscrubber") directed dramedy just got its two key actors in Diane Keaton and Ed Harris. The story was penned by Matthew McDuffie and Posin which centers on a widow (Keaton) who runs into a man who looks almost identical to her husband that passed on years ago. This is the part where I would recommend whip out the tissues for this one ladies, but if it has a mix of humor and depression then that probably won't be the case. At least Posin sheds a little more light on her idea of the film."This...
