[Editor’s note: This article contains spoilers for “Hacks” Season 1.]
There’s something invigorating about talking to the creators of a new, delightful TV series, so it should come as no surprise that talking with Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, creators of HBO Max’s “Hacks” was a joy unto itself.
It’s also unsurprising that the trio were thrilled to discuss the series, their stars, and what the show looks like after the Season 1 finale set its dynamic duo on an assuredly fraught new path.
Centered around Deborah Vance (a never better Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (dynamic upstart Hannah Einbinder), “Hacks” is a marvel from the first. Deborah is a slightly long-in -the-tooth stand-up comedian, whose career was not what it could have been thanks to systemic injustices. She nevertheless became the comedy queen of Las Vegas. The first time IndieWire spoke to Daniel Radcliffe and Simon Rich about the new TBS comedy “Miracle Workers,” it was January 2018, and they were early into production — and the early days of doing publicity for the show.
“This is all unspoiled territory,” the globally famous star of the “Harry Potter” series said.
“It’s like our first hour of press,” Rich added.
“You can’t describe your character differently every time,” Radcliffe continued. “I have to come up with something fairly quickly soon.”
The origins of the TBS comedy, which imagines a version of Heaven run like a too-recognizable corporate entity, came after Radcliffe read “What in God’s Name,” the novel which inspired the series. His girlfriend, a huge fan of Rich’s writing, had given him a copy — it was actually the second of Rich’s books that she had given Radcliffe.

In Private Life, Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti portray a middle-aged couple struggling with infertility. The film paints a funny but unflinching portrait of the efforts to have a child, from painful IVF injections, to anxious adoption interviews, to the humbling search for an egg donor. Throughout the journey, they remain a unit. With their on-screen chemistry fully intact in the mahogany and red-velvet environs of New York’s NoMad Hotel, Hahn and Giamatti greet each other with a long embrace. They immediately fall into a couple’s rhythm of completing one another’s sentences when talking about their collaboration with writer-director Tamara Jenkins.
What attracted you to this film?
Paul Giamatti: I have known Tamara for a long time, and we had tried to work on something before and that didn’t work out. I wanted to work with her. Clearly, someone else didn’t work out, so she came to me.

Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Inherit the Viper”Margarita Levieva is taking a break from 1970s New York City and “The Deuce” to star alongside Josh Hartnett in “Inherit The Viper.” The story follows the two stars as siblings in West Virginia caught up in a spiral of violence amidst a drug epidemic while they try to escape their circumstances. No other talent is attached, and there is no production information as of yet, but as pre-production continues, Orly Sitowitz will be filling out the cast list. “Detective Pikachu” Justice Smith will lead the upcoming live-action “Pokemon” movie “Detective Pikachu.” It’s the franchise’s first ever live action adaptation, and little is known about the plot. Rob Letterman will direct the film,...

It seems like “The House with a Clock in its Walls” has plenty of room, as it continues to add principal cast members while getting ready to film in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to Cate Blanchett and Jack Black, Kyle MacLachlan and young actor Owen Vaccaro have recently been added to the project, which is being cast by Nicole Abellera and Jeanne McCarthy. The story follows Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan “who aids his magical uncle in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world,” and in addition to casting its featured roles, the production is also searching for a body double for the young boy. The team is looking for a Caucasian male, aged 9-11, who is between 4’5” and 4’9” tall and weighs 68–75 pounds. The production also needs child actors, aged 6–12, for background in school scenes with the lead character. They are looking especially for...

In the year of our Lord 2017, The War of the Chrises ended. A long-gestating and confounding battle between movie stars with similar names, similar roles, and similar skin tones, came to a close. Chris Evans (the Captain in “Captain America”), Chris Hemsworth (the Thor in “Thor”), Chris Pratt (a guardian in “Guardians of the Galaxy”), and Chris Pine (the dude in “Wonder Woman”) laid down their super weapons and bowed down to the king.
You need not ask who won. You already know.
Let King Pine’s reign never end.
Now, before we get too much further into this review of “Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later,” it should be noted that King Pine isn’t a prominent figure in David Wain and Michael Showalter’s eight, cheery new episodes. King Pine is emblematic of what makes this Netflix original series better than the last, even though he’s...

After years in development, it looks like viewers will finally get to see a darkly comedic take on the world of puppets in The Happytime Murders. Taking place in a world where puppets and humans live together, the film will feature a grisly murder mystery that must be solved by a pair of detectives, one human and one puppet. The movie is now finally moving forward with Melissa McCarthy set to star and produce, Brian Henson (son of the legendary Jim Henson) on board as the director, and filming expected to begin this August.

Casting directors have a strange distinction in the awards world: Their guild has an Academy branch, but it’s the only one without its own Oscar category. Imagine for a moment that they did. What are the best-cast films of 2016?
IndieWire asked 13 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. There were a few restrictions worth noting. Although casting directors often get early sneak peeks at films, many noted there are some films they still hadn’t seen. In particular, many are anxious to find out what legendary casting director Ellen Lewis has cooked up for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The other restriction, which was imposed as responses came in: They couldn’t all write about “Moonlight.” (We’ll dig further into the casting of that film in another article.)

MTV’s Josh Horowitz sat down with “Now You See Me 2” star Dave Franco at CinemaCon and asked the young actor about the audition process for the new “Han Solo” movie that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing for Disney and Lucasfilm. Last week, reports emerged that Alden Ehrenreich (“Hail, Caesar!”) was the frontrunner for the coveted role, so perhaps that’s why Franco decided to let his guard down and discuss it. “It’s like most other auditions,” Franco said with a laugh. “I went in one time for Jeanne McCarthy, who I’ve auditioned for a million times before,...

May the force be with male actors under 35 this year. While superfans pitch their tents outside the local cinema for the premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Walt Disney Pictures is already counting the ways to spin its billion-dollar acquisition. Han Solo, the wisecracking captain of the Millennium Falcon—made famous by Harrison Ford—is getting a new face for the feature. The project, currently going by the code name “Red Cup” (a wink to the plastic cup–maker that shares the character’s surname), has directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller attached. Casting director Jeanne McCarthy is tasked with recasting the iconic role for what looks to be a prequel to the first film, “A New Hope.” Despite casting being well underway, production isn’t slated to begin until January 2017. Space may be seeing its second heyday. In a market saturated with comic book heroes, a few studios...

"Star Wars The Force Awakens" debuts in theaters in a few weeks, but Disney is already hard at work casting a young Hal Solo for their 2018 Solo prequel spinoff film. When Disney first announced they would be releasing one "Star Wars" film per year until 2020, fans wondered exactly what that would entail. Earlier this year the studio shared their plans, which included "Episode VII", "Episode VIII", "Episode IX", and three spinoff prequels that focused on the stolen death star plans in "Rogue One", Han Solo, and Boba Fett. While the Han Solo prequel spinoff doesn't have a title yet, it does have a production team, which includes screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that, according to their sources, Lord and Miller's casting director, Jeanne McCarthy ("American Crime Story", "The Mindy Project", "21 Jump Street"), has seen over 2,500 actors to play the young Han Solo.

Disney have launched what is probably the biggest ever search for a single role in the history of Hollywood; the coveted lead of a young Han Solo in their planned Star Wars Anthology film.
The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that at least 2,500 actors are currently auditioning, either via tape or in person.
You can bet that with that number, every eligible, successful young actor (and some who aren’t) in the business is having a pop. The list of confirmed actors to be throwing their hat into the ring include Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Max Thieriot, Miles Teller, Nick Robinson, Tom Felton(!?) and even Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek.

Are you a young actor with a pulse and a penis? Congratulations, you might have a shot at playing a young Han Solo! THR reports that over 2,500 actors have auditioned for Han Solo for the Star Wars spinoff in what has reportedly become one of the largest casting searches ever. The casting director, Jeanne McCarthy, is culling the options so that Star Wars spinoff directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller can make their final pick before they go into production in January of 2017.The search for Solo is adorably named — wait for it — "Red Cup" (you know, like a solo cup), and it's apparently the "easiest" part to audition for. So who has read for the part? Among the thousands of names, there are a number of famous faces, including The Fault in Our Stars' Ansel Elgort, The Walking Dead's Chandler Riggs, Mr. Robot dreamboat Rami Malek, The...

Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Marshall, whose adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" bows Dec. 25, will receive the New York Apple Award, "recognizing individuals who have made special contributions to the New York entertainment...

The Latina actress-dancer-director-choreographer (say that five times fast) is perfect for ABC’s daytime talk show. Here are seven reasons why.
1. She’s not a stereotypical or “cookie-cutter” Latina.
The native New Yorker defies common Latin stereotypes— the sort of which is commonly perpetuated on television. (You know: young and sexy with big boobs and bigger hair, with little talent to speak of.) Now, it’s no secret that The View...

In lieu of attending the nuptials, Mark sent out a congratulatory tweet to the happy couple.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.
