Sanford and Son, the first mainstream, primetime sitcom in television history with an almost-all Black cast, debuted on NBC on Jan. 14, 1972. Created by Norman Lear, and starring legendary “blue” comedian Redd Foxx as an African American bigot, it was seen as a direct answer to CBS’ All in the Family. But the Bunker family series was a social satire which took its laughs seriously. The Sanfords presented pure comedy, any lessons it taught were intentionally coincidental. The most controversial part of the show, when it first aired, was its lead actor.
Foxx was already an underground comedy legend when Cleavon Little, best known for his role as Sheriff Bart in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, suggested him for the lead in the mid-season replacement. David Lambert at TV Shows on DVD reports the Grady TV show, a Sanford and Son spin-off, starring Whitman Mayo as Grady Wilson, is coming to DVD as a manufacture-on-demand, in July. Grady was cancelled by NBC, after one season during which 10 episodes aired. The Grady TV series cast also includes: Carol Cole, Joe Morton, Rosanne Katon, and Haywood Nelson.After Grady was cancelled, Mayo returned to Sanford and Son, and went on to the Sanford Arms sequel series, but left due to a salary disagreement. Veteran actor Whitman Mayo, star of Sanford And Son, has died aged 70. The New Yorker, who made his screen debut in The Black Klansman in 1966, passed away on Tuesday. His family have not disclosed the cause of death. He will best remembered for his role as Grady Wilson in the junk- dealer show which proved so popular, and was given his own spin-off show Grady.
