If there’s justice in this world, high school comedy Never Have I Ever will return for at least a third season. The story of 15-year-old Devi Vishwakumar, a Los Angeles teen reeling from her beloved father’s sudden death while trying to navigate all the usual boys/school/friendship mess of adolescence, deserves to continue long into the future. (Here’s our spoiler-free season two review.)
While fans wait for news on a third season commission, the 10 great shows below are well worth discovering or (re)discovering. They’re not all teen shows, nor are they all strictly comedies, but somewhere along the line, they share some DNA with Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Never Have I Ever. From New Line Cinema comes the romantic comedy Isn’T It Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth (the “Hunger Games” films), Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra, under the direction of Todd Strauss-Schulson.
New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.
Wilson stars as Natalie, alongside Hemsworth as Blake, a handsome client; Devine as her co-worker and earnest best friend, Josh; and Chopra as Isabella, a model and self-proclaimed yoga ambassador.

The trailer for Rebel Wilson’s upcoming rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic” goes full meta, sending up every romantic-comedy cliché you can imagine — but still featuring a shirtless Liam Hemsworth in a towel.
Wilson stars as New York City architect Natalie, who works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper.
A lifelong cynic when it comes to love, she has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare — a PG-13 romantic comedy where she is the leading lady with a fabulous wardrobe, luxe apartment, a new gay best friend and a profanity-free vocabulary.

Pitch Perfect and How to Be Single star Rebel Wilson has closed a deal to headline a new, as-yet-untitled romantic comedy at New Line, Variety has learned.
No word yet of a director to take the reins, though the outlet does reveal Todd Garner (Paul Blart: Mall Cop), Grant Scharbo and Gina Matthews are currently attached to produce. That search for a director will no doubt intensify now that Wilson has boarded the embryonic project, which is shaping up to be a meta rom-com centering on the actress’ cynical lead.

With two TV shows brewing their own version of the classic Washington Irving tale, Sleepy Holly, it's going to be interesting to see which falls flat and which gallops away like The Headless Horseman on his ghostly steed.
Deadline reports that The CW’s "Sleepy Hollow" drama has landed at Warner Bros TV. The project was pitched to the network last month with no studio attached, and has now been laid off at one of the CW’s sibling studios, Warner Bros.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has been remade before, but now it’s getting an update.
The latest project from Missing writers Patrick Macmanus and Grant Scharbo aims to update the classic story as the two writers plan to develop it into a pilot that will hopefully be picked up by The CW. The network is known best for leading the way in teen drama television, so I’m guessing the horror level will be more on par with Supernatural than Tales From The Crypt.
This contemporary take will cast Ichabod Crane as a swarthy, gun-toting FBI agent. Crane finds himself in the small town of Sleepy Hollow as part of the investigation into a beheading.
Sleepy Hollow is not attached to any studio yet, but producers Gina Matthews (Missing), Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze have pitched the pilot to The CW already.

Chicago – ABC/Disney has released three of their Spring 2012 mid-season shows on DVD in time for, well, to say goodbye to two of them and catch up on the third. The releases for “Gcb” and “Missing” could have been labeled “Complete Series” as ABC pulled the plug on both shows but Shonda Rhimes’ “Scandal” is being given another chance to find a larger audience in the Fall. All three sets are well-loaded with special features.
To this critic, the show that ABC decided to give more time to grow — “Scandal” with Kerry Washington & Tony Goldwyn — is also the best DVD set to pick up. While “Missing” had some solid elements (including some well-choreographed action and a strong central performance from Ashley Judd), “Gcb” was little more than a “Desperate Housewives” clone before the original had even left through the Exit door. Forgive the obvious pun, but through two episodes, the ratings for ABC's latest drama have not been… Missing.
Indeed, Gregory Poirier appears to have a hit on his hands, one he told me over the phone today was the brainchild of fellow producer Gina Matthews. She sold him on the concept largely based on the fact that both are involved parents.
Then, of course, there was Ashley Judd. Was the role written with this movie star in mind?
“She was the archetype," Poirier said. "She does have a reputation for saying no to most television things. When we finally got the word that she had read the script and liked it, we thought 'Oh my God we finally got our meeting with our dream person!'"
Shot on location across Europe, each episode of Missing feels like an hour-long movie. It's one of the main draws for viewers.

There’s a certain genre of television that I’m not very friendly with, and it’s something I should confess before anyone goes too far in this review. It’s a genre that is dominated by shows with initials as their names these days, and they are geared actually toward people somewhere around my age. I find them awful in general, stunted by broken, goofy dialog that often seems to be written by people who have never heard people speak in real life, and pushed along by action scenes that are curiously hokey, but with delusions of grandeur.
If such shows are your bag, and you can deal with Ashley Judd as an ex-cia badass (but, I repeat myself), then I’ve got a show for you.

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. At first glance the globe-hopping series “Missing,” which stars Ashley Judd as a former CIA operative in search of her missing son, looks like it would have a sky-high budget. Each of the episodes was shot on location in a different European city. But after today’s TCA panel on the show, executive producer Gina Matthews and writer/executive producer Grant Scharbo told Deadline the show’s budget is “in the middle-range” of the budgets of all the network’s hour dramas. In fact Scharbo said the show could be shot more cheaply abroad than in Los Angeles. And because of the international locations, the show has already been sold in various international markets. Foreign characters will speak in their native tongues, with subtitles. ABC ordered the 10 completed episodes without a pilot. Matthews said that kept the producers from burning through...

ABC has a slew of new shows coming, many of which need a lot of luck if they're going to last more than a handful of episodes. The schedule has been released, so let's take a lot at what's coming.
Oddly enough, as part of the new announcement, ABC has solidified the return of several more shows, including Happy Endings, despite the fact that two other networks have shows on their slate with cast members from the show. That should be interesting. Of course, it works for me, because I'm a fan.
In other news, Desperate Housewives will not die. Are you kidding me with this show still being on?

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

Missing, which eyes an early fall launch, centers on Becca Winstone (Judd), a devoted single mom who, after her 18-year-old son disappears in Italy, takes it upon herself to travel to Europe and track him down. It soon becomes clear that Winstone is a former CIA agent who will stop at nothing to bring her son home alive. Steve Shill is on board to direct multiple episodes of the series, including the opener. He will also executive produce with writer Poirier, Grant Scharbo and Gina Matthews. Production is scheduled to begin late next month in Rome, Vienna and Prague. Bad Mom, from ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment, centers on Julia (Elfman), a mom whose two kids had been raised largely by her mom.

No, Liam Neeson is not doing a small-screen version of Taken for ABC. But the Alphabet is developing a series that’s similar to the 2008 film about a former spy who’s daughter is kidnapped overseas. In Missing, which was written by Greg Poirier and executive produced by Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo through ABC Studios, a young man disappears while in Italy for a summer internship so his mom travels to Europe to track him down. It soon becomes clear, however, that she’s no ordinary woman. That’s because she used to work for the CIA!

ABC seems to be sticking to its strategy of running original scripted series in the summer, putting on the fast track a new project from feature writer Greg Poirier (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) and Grant Scharbo and Gina Matthews, the producers behind ABC's recent summer series The Gates. Steve Shill, who just won an Emmy for his directing work on Dexter, is reportedly attached to direct the pilot for the untitled spy drama eyed for next summer. While it has received a script order, there is already talk about 3-5 back-up scripts. And feelers have been sent out to writers to join the potential series. The project, from ABC Studios and Scharbo and Matthews' Little Engine, is a female-centered spy show described as Taken meets The Bourne Identity. ABC had mixed results with its original scripted series this past summer: Canadian import Rookie Blue was the top-rated new scripted...

"Prison Break" alum Frank Grillo has landed the lead in ABC's supernatural crime drama series "The Gates."
Luke Mably, Janina Gavankar and Chandra West also have been cast in the project, which Terry McDonough has come on board to direct.
"Gates" is produced by Fox TV Studios through the company's international co-production model. Its green light was contingent on FtvS securing foreign financing.
The series, being eyed for a summer launch, moved forward after ABC stepped up and increased the license fee on it while FtvS continues conversations with international broadcasters.
Written by Richard Hatem and Grant Scharbo, "Gates" centers on a big-city cop (Grillo) who becomes chief of police in a seemingly sleepy planned community only to discover there's much more to the residents than meets the eye.
Mably ("The Prince and Me") will play one of the residents, a cardiologist who is a vampirelike creature. Gavankar ("The L Word...

Complete pilot season coverage
UPDATED 4:28 p.m. PT March 16
CBS has greenlighted comedy pilot "Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal."
The project, based on comedian Mike Birbiglia's weekly blog that chronicles his daily life, will star him as a stand-up comedian who lives with his girlfriend in Brooklyn and struggles in his efforts to be a grown up, have a relationship, and do the right things.
Birbiglia and Andrew Secunda ("Love, Inc".) created the project, which was originally set at NBC Universal with Secunda as the writer. About 10 days ago, it moved to CBS Paramount Network TV, and after a rewrite by Secunda, CBS picked it up to pilot. Secunda will executive produce with Little Engine's Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Birbiglia will serve as producer.
Birbiglia, 29, who has toured the country for the past seven years, became one of the youngest comedians ever to appear on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman."
Years ago, the "Late Show" appearance of another stand-up comedian, Ray Romano, also led to an autobiographical comedy project for CBS that went on to become "Everybody Loves Raymond," one of the top TV series of the past decade.

Bahar Soomekh, Matt Lanter and Shannon Lucio have been cast in Fox's new paranormal drama The Oaks.
The project, from 20th Century Fox TV and Little Engine, was picked up by the network last month with a rich series commitment after a heated bidding war.
Written by David Schulner and to be run by Shawn Ryan, Oaks tells the intertwined stories of three families -- a young couple who have just lost a child in 1968, a family of four in 1988 and a pregnant couple in 2008 -- who live in the same house and are haunted by a restless spirit.
Lucio and Lanter will play the 1968 couple; Soomekh will play the pregnant woman, who is a highly educated, capable executive, in 2008.
Michael Cuesta is directing the pilot for Oaks, which is slated to begin production in November. He also is executive producing with Schulner, Ryan and Little Engine's Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo.
