Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).
Up Front
This month rather than basking on the glory of the previous double-sized issue or of reaching the 10th issue milestone he turns the spotlight on Bill Chadwick. He was the first ‘Fan in The Street’ from #1 and since #5 he has been working for Comics Interview in an editorial role. Now I am trying to remember if I gave him a hard time or not?! Anyway, Dak makes a big deal of dedicating the Up Front space to Chadwick but really it just reads as three further questions from the ‘Fan in The Street’ interview. It would be a cool move if he was going to switch this space...

By day, Jennifer Turner works in law enforcement in Vancouver. But on this particular late August weekend, she’s in Cleveland, attending JemCon, an annual gathering for devotees of the colorful Eighties cartoon Jem and the Holograms. Turner’s fandom runs deep. She grew up with a single father who supported her love for all things Jem. One Christmas, she woke up to find he had bought her every single Jem-related doll available at the time; other times, he would set an alarm and wake her up early so she...

To the surprise of no one who even casually followed the live-action “Jem” film last year, it bombed. Hard. In an unprecedented moved, the movie did so poorly it was pulled from theaters after only two weeks. The $5 million budget wasn’t even recouped, as the tone-deaf take on the 80s cartoon brought in a paltry $1.37 million. Jem and the Holograms deserve better. And now the all-female production company Creature wants to make it happen. Some really quick backstory. The “Jem and the Holograms” live-action movie blindsided the Internet back in 2014 when the three men (first red flag) in charge of production announced they were crowdsourcing casting, music, and costumes for the film. At this point the movie hadn’t even been cast. Two weeks later it was announced “Jem” would go into production within weeks (second red flag). On top of that, Jem’s creator Christy Marx revealed on...

Based on the 1980s animated television series, this October sees a rejuvenation of Jem and the Holograms, as it takes form in a new live-action film. In this new featurette, we go behind the scenes with director Jon M. Chu, creator of the television series Christy Marx, and members of the cast including Molly Ringwald, Aubrey Peeples, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Perrineau, and Stefanie Scott, as they tell us about what the film stands for.
Jem and the Holograms is primarily a coming-of-age story, about a young girl who, suddenly in the spotlight, has to choose who she wants to be. It's themes such as finding your own identity that drew the cast, and especially actress Molly Ringwald, to the project. For Molly, a coming-of-age story is something that resonated with her as it's a theme that resided in the films that made her famous, such as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.

The 80s saw a lot of cartoons and animated shows gain a loyal following among individuals, even as they outgrew the series’ intended demographic. Among these shows was Jem and the Holograms, whose three-season run garnered it a fair amount of commercial acclaim, both for the show and for creator and writer Christy Marx.
Fans of the series were thus intrigued to learn that a feature film adaptation of the series was in development, as announced by Jon M. Chu. Onboard as a producer, Chu takes on directorial duties for the film as well, having previously directed Step Up 3D and GI Joe: Retaliation. Ryan Landels takes on screenwriting duties for the feature, which shares a name with the show it’s adapted from, and the cast includes Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis, with Nashville‘s Aubrey Peeples taking on the titular role of Jem. The movie synopsis is as follows.

First off, it seems important that we all take a moment to remember and acknowledge that we’re currently living in a world where a Jem and the Holograms live-action feature film is being made right now. This is something fans of candy-colored, techno-laced, secret-identity-driven eighties cartoons have dreamed of for decades. Ahh. Moment done? Cool. We may have only known about said Jem and the Holograms film for just over a month, but it sure sounds like director Jon M. Chu is not letting any hyper-colored grass grow under his feet, and the project is zooming right along. When the feature was first announced last month, Chu and his producing partners Jason Blum and Scooter Braun made it clear that this thing was going to be a fan-driven experience, and their announcement video also asked for help when it came to just about every major part of the film – from writing music to designing costumes to...

Yesterday's announcement about a "Jem and the Holograms" movie is giving us a lot of feelings, not all of them good. Yesterday, in a cute viral video, "G.I. Joe" director Jon M. Chu, horror movie producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions), and Bieber believer Scooter Braun took to YouTube to announce their new project and call for video auditions.
Chu described it as "a modern-day, live action, reinvention of the 1980's Hasbro classic cartoon," with Blum helpfully adding, "If you have a cool mom, she'll definitely know what it is!"
Braun discovered Justin Bieber on YouTube, inadvertently creating the TMZ monster running amok today; incidentally, that's also how they're looking for "Jem" cast members. You do the math. Blumhouse has been behind some good quick-and-cheap horror franchises, like "Paranormal Activity," "Insidious," "Sinister," and "The Purge," and some really bad ones, like, well, the endless parade of "Paranormal Activity" sequels.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu has chosen to take on another 1980s animated property and adapt it into a live action movie with a feature version of Jem and the Holograms. This is the perfect project for the guy who also directed two Step Up movies and two Justin Bieber documentaries. Unfortunately, he's still attached to direct a third G.I. Joe movie. I don't really care about Jem so I could care less how that movie turns out.
Chu made the announcement with his producing partners Jason Blum and Scooter Braun. You can check out the announcement video below. In it they reveal a unique approach to the property, where they are asking fans for creative submissions that could be used in the feature film release.
The Jem and the Holograms series was created by Christy Marx in collaboration with Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions. It premiered in 1985 and ran for three seasons.

With a resume stretching from "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" to "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," it's not a major surprise to hear that filmmaker Jon M. Chu is reportedly attached to direct a "Jem and the Holograms" feature.
A joint Hasbro, Marvel and Sunbow Productions series, the original mid-late 1980s cartoon followed a musical superstar named Jem, who is actually a young woman named Jerrica Benton who uses a holographic computer to clandestinely perform rock concerts.
Christy Marx created the property while Jason Blum and Scooter Braun are set to produce the film version. The news was revealed via a video announcement in which they also talk about their approach to the property.

Amethyst will make her return to DC Comics. The fan favourite Princess of Gemworld will return in the newly-announced Sword of Sorcery. The title will be written by Christy Marx, the creator of the '80s animated series Jem and the Holograms. "Dan Didio called me up out of the blue and said, 'Hey you remember Amethyst?'" Marx told io9. "And I said, 'Sure, I read the whole series when she came out'. "And he said, 'Well, we're giving her a new series and a reboot - would you be interested?' And I said, 'Hell yeah!'" The original series featured Amy Winston, a young girl who discovers that she is the orphaned princess from a magical kingdom. "This will be a complete reboot," Marx continued. Following the debut of a first look at The Phantom, Newsarama has complied the other three covers for the new series' which are set to be released this September as a part of DC's third wave. We already knew that Scott Snyder would be handling writing duties on The Talon, but it has now been revealed that he will be joined by James Tynion IV, with art from Guillem March. The series will follow Calvin Rose, the only Talon who escaped from the Court of Owls as he goes on the run from the secret group who recently revealed their presence in Batman. Sword of Sorcery will actually be an anthology book (in a similar style to All-Star Western) which will feature the return of Amethyst. This will make up the main part of the book, written by Christy Marx with art by Aaron Lopresti, while a back up tale...

Perhaps it is elitist of me to feel badly for kids these days and the quality of television programming available to them, but I don't mind being thought a snob. I am the older sister to much younger siblings (my youngest sister, Noa, was born the day after I went to prom), so I've been privy to experience everything from the best: Arthur and Spongebob Squarepants; to the worst: Pretty much everything else.
My sister is old enough to know better now, but i've got two young nieces to worry about and a whole world of pop culture to introduce them to. Thankfully, someone in power must've had a child, seen the abysmal choices and decided to do something about it. As of yesterday, I am so happy to say, I can share the greatness of Jem and The Holograms (and those hot bitches The Misfits) with a whole new generation.

Hasbro has been super protective of all its Jem copywritten stuff because it's developing new stuff!
Me and my friends are Jem girls. Even the boys.
If you don't know what Jem and the Holograms is, just imagine a non-sexist Barbie as a pink-haired rock star, but with a personality, a hot boyfriend who also rocks out, a secret identity, a record company, a charity that helps disadvantaged girls, and a nemesis in a band called The Misfits with green hair. Yes - a cartoon TV series. Jem and the Holograms was created by Christy Marx (read our interview) as a cartoon series for girls in the 1980s, and has since been the subject of remarkable fandom in the form of Jem Conventions, fansites, and doll collecting (yes, they made a doll of the cartoon character).
Rio, with Jem (left) and with Jerrica (right).
