We got to interview William Levy and Alicia Sanz about their new Latin action thriller movie En Brazos De Un Asesino. The movie also stars Roberto Sosa, Adrian Lastra, Dalisa Alegria, Ettore D’ Alessandro, Jean Jean, Alessia Seravalle and is directed by Matias Moltrasio.
En Brazos de un Asesino means, “in the arms of an assassin,” and the movie is adapted from J. A Redmerski’s thiller, “Killing Sarai”.
William talks about the journey from actor to co-writer of this film and how he wanted to take control of his career. Also, now, as a producer, he can create opportunities for other people. He recalls how watching The Godfather in Cuba and seeing Andy Garcia who is Cuban inspired him to become an actor. The Latino market in America provides the number one audience going to the movies yet they only represent 3 percent of the roles. He wants to do something to change this!

It’s problematic when a possible franchise-launcher feels like an indifferent later entry in a series, and that is the case with “En Brazos de un Asesino” aka “In the Arms of an Assassin.” This Pantelion release has the requisite basic elements for undemanding escapism, with attractive leads, erotic elements and ample bullet-riddled peril. But despite being based on the first of seven (so far) interlocking pulp romantic-thrillers by J.A. Redmerski, Matias Moltrasio’s feature directorial debut isn’t splashy or assured enough to leave one wanting more, and the narrative awkwardly completes one arc and begins another after the two-thirds point.
Opening on approximately 150 U.S. screens Dec. 6, the film is certainly a viable commercial item among Spanish-speaking audiences. But let’s hope any follow-ups leave a stronger impression.

The prize for best direction of 1991 ought to have gone to Alex Cox, whose visual economy in this show is to be applauded. Cox’s camera is fluid, expressive yet technically invisible and unencumbered with fancy tricks: the frame never goes static, yet the film has only a couple of hundred cuts! Filmed in Spanish in Mexico, we get a non-cynical image of a culture and a story that’s universally applicable. Mexican neorealism? Roberto Sosa is an idealistic young recruit, who learns that reality is pretty rough out on the lonesome, deadly highway.

"A pungent mix of existential grunge." Kino Lorber has debtued a new trailer for their upcoming re-release of Alex Cox's film Highway Patrolman, celebrating the 25th anniversary of its release in Us cinemas. It actually premiered at Tiff in 1992, and opened in Mexico in 1991, but didn't arrive in Us theaters until late 1993. Repo Man and Sid & Nancy director Alex Cox went south of the border to film this dramatic tale of a rookie member of Mexico's national highway patrol, who struggles to keep on the straight and narrow in a department rife with corruption. It's a new 4K restoration overseen by the director himself, showing at Film Forum in NYC first. Roberto Sosa stars as Pedro, with Bruno Bichir, Vanessa Bauche, Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez, and Pedro Armendáriz Jr. This looks rad! Always worth going out to catch these re-releases. Here's the new trailer for the re-release of Alex Cox's Highway Patrolman,...

While best known for his cult classics Repo Man and Sid & Nancy, due to some ostracization from Hollywood, director Alex Cox found himself south of the border in the early 1990s. The first film in he made in Mexico, Highway Patrolman, has now received a beautiful new 4K restoration courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Set to open at Film Forum at the end of the month, we’re pleased to exclusively debut not only a new trailer, but the first trailer as the film never received one upon its initial release in 1991. The film tracks the journey of Pedro (Roberto Sosa), our titular character who finds himself up against a burgeoning drug war in Mexico as the law of the land gets blurred.
Regarding the restoration, Alex Cox said, “Highway Patrolman is the first film I directed shot (almost) entirely in long takes…what the Mexicans call “plano secuencia”. It’s...

Alright film fans, you may know all there is to know about the great Edward D. Wood, Jr. (or at least you’ve seen Tim Burton’s wonderful 1994 bio-pic Ed Wood), but did you know anything about a similar low budget (not really a “B picture”, but closer to a “Z picture”) director from “south of the border”? Well, the new film The Fantastic World Of Juan Orol will give you a crash course in the colorful life and fairly long (1935 to 1968) directing career of Mr. Juan Orol. After a brief clip with the actual Orol the film jumps to 1982 and the now elderly Juan (Roberto Sosa), dressed in his 1940′s finery, is sitting in the lobby of a movie theatre showing his film retrospective to only a few film buffs. He then begins to regale a young usher with his story. Born in Galicia, he moved to Cuba. After failed attempts in boxing,...

"A visually playful biopic on Mexico's Ed Wood." -Variety
The accolades continue to roll in as Global Lens 2013 puts a spotlight on The Fantastic Wrld of Juan Orol, which recently played at the San Diego Latino Film Festival.
The story: Move over Ed Wood! Mexico's half-forgotten B-movie master, "involuntary surrealist" Juan Orol, receives a pitch-perfect tribute in this irresistible love letter to a self-made man of showbiz, whose career spanned nearly sixty films. In a glorious black-and-white flashback mingling movie-tainted memories of his Galician childhood, forced exile to Cuba and arrival in Mexico. The intrepid "Juanito" pursues failed careers as baseball player, boxer, bullfighter and gangster before landing in the movies-where failure kind of works for him. As Orol, Roberto Sosa exudes droll underdog charm, anchoring a fast-moving comedy and a homage to a golden age of cinema.
"A clever camp homage to Orol, this film playfully explores the filmmaker's cult legacy, including visuals that deftly evoke the vintage stock of bygone eras, and the budget aesthetic of its subject." -AFI Silver

Lionsgate have just sent over the first UK poster and trailer for their new movie starring Mel Gibson with the title ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation. he movie sees Mel Gibson in his first action movie for some years and I’m really hoping (like The Beaver) that he puts in an amazing performance. Could it be a new Lethal Weapon or has that time been and gone for Mel? I guess we’ll see.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation is directed by Adrian Grunberg and also stars Peter Stormare, Bob Gunton, Dean Norris, Scott Cohen, Patrick Bauchau. It’ll be with us May 11th.
It’s been a bad day for Driver (Gibson) and it’s not getting any better. He just made a big haul of millions that would give him a nice summer vacation on easy street. A good idea that went south – literally.

Microcinema International DVD has acquired six films from that bizarre and elusive British cult director Alex Cox, some of which have never before been available in the United States. First up is Straight to Hell Returns, which is a kind of remix of Cox's Straight to Hell (1987), "featuring enhanced violence and cruelty, and additional shots by cinematographer Tom Richmond." Straight to Hell was an attempt at a cult comedy Western, about a bunch of killers hiding out in a weird town, starring Joe Strummer, Courtney Love, Dennis Hopper, Elvis Costello,Sy Richardson, Shane McGowan, Dick Rude, Jim Jarmusch, and Grace Jones. It never really caught on, but perhaps it will now.
Next is Searchers 2.0 (2007), another comedy with Western overtones. Two former child actors, and veterans of many movie Westerns, take a road trip to get revenge on a sadistic screenwriter who tormented them on an early film. Roger Corman produced.
